The switched reluctance motor (SRM) has more salient features such as high starting torque, isolation of phase windings, and no rotor windings. Similarly, a permanent magnet brushless direct current (BLDC) motor possesses numerous merits such as high power density, and low torque ripple. However, this SRM and permanent magnet BLDC motor suffer from torque ripple and cogging torque, respectively. Therefore, this research article enriches the design procedure and characteristics of a 3-kW, 60-V hybrid reluctance motor with minimum torque ripple and vibration. Furthermore, this proposed motor is modeled and analyzed with various laminating core materials such as 47F165, Arnon 7, M420-50D, M300-35A, 36F155, and M-27 24Ga for identifying the superior material by considering the relevant parameters such as losses and torque. In the proposed doubly salient motor, a vibration analysis is also performed to predict its natural frequency. A laboratory arrangement is implemented to examine the proposed motor at no-load conditions. Then no-load current and vibration frequency were measured by a digital storage oscilloscope and accelerometer, respectively. These experimental outcomes are compared with finite-element analysis and analytical equations to validate findings.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is performance enhancement of ferrite-assisted synchronous reluctance (FASR) motor using multi-objective differential evolution (MODE) algorithm, considering the significant geometric design parameters.Design/methodology/approach: This work illustrates the optimization of FASR motor using MODE algorithm to enhance the performance of the motor considering barrier angular positions, magnet height, magnet axial length, flux barrier angles of the rotor and air gap length. In the optimization routine to determine the performance parameters, generalized regression neural network-based interpolation is used. The results of MODE are validated with multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm and multi-objective genetic algorithm.Findings: The design optimization procedure developed in this work for FASR motor aims at achieving multiple objectives, namely, average torque, torque ripple and efficiency. With multiple objectives, it is essential to give the designer the tradeoff between different objectives so as to arrive at the best design suitable for the application. The results obtained in this work justify the application of the MODE approach for FASR motor to determine the various feasible solutions within the bounds of the design.Research limitations/implications: Analysis, design and optimization of synchronous reluctance motor has been explored in detail to establish its potential for variable speed applications. In recent years, the focus is toward the electromagnetic design of hybrid configurations such as FASR motor. It is in this preview this work aims to achieve optimal design of FASR motor using multi-objective optimization approach.Practical/implications: The results of this work will supplement and encourage the application of FASR motor as a viable alternate for variable speed drive applications. In addition, the application of MODE to arrive at better design solutions is demonstrated.Originality/value: The approach presented in this work focuses on obtaining enhanced design of FASR motor considering average torque, torque ripple and efficiency as performance measures. Theposteriorianalysis of optimization provides an insight into the choice of parameters involved and their effects on the design of FASR motor. The efficacy of the optimization routine is justified in comparison with other multi-objective algorithms.

The switched reluctance motor (SRM) plays a significant role in many industrial applications. Among the various topologies of SRM, modified segmented rotor SRM (MSRSRM) overcomes the shortfalls of conventional SRM. From an application perspective, the analysis of electromagnetic and thermal aspects of segmented rotor SRM becomes crucial. In the present work, the thermal analysis for modified segmented rotor SRM used in cooling fan applications is detailed. The effect of temperature rises in the different parts of the machine due to electromagnetic losses is identified by using the finite element software package ANSYS. External fin-based convective cooling strategy is adopted and analysed for the MSRSRM proposed in the present work. Choosing the suitable fin material and arrangements of fins play a crucial role in the effective thermal management of the MSRSRM. Three different Aluminium (Al) Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) based fins are considered for this analysis. In addition, the optimum number of fins and their thickness are also identified using thermal analysis. The results revealed that the Al/Diamond MMC-based fins are more effective compared with other fin materials. Also, the axial type-thin fin (1mm) arrangement yields better results compared with other fin arrangements.
