The industrial pollution caused by metallurgical waste accumulation has a negative impact on the three environmental factors: soil, air and water. Therefore, the correct management of these wastes would lead to: protection of the environmental factors, the saving of natural resources and sustainability of the steel industry. The purpose of this paper is to assess the chemical and mineralogical compositions of metallurgical wastes landfilled in the Păgida slag dump (Alba County, Romania), for sustainability of the steel industry and metal conservation. The chemical compositions of the two waste samples were analyzed by the XRF (X-ray fluorescence) technique. According to the chemical characterization, magnesium oxide (MgO) has potential to be used as an additional and raw material in the cement industry. The presence of oxides such as CaO, SiO2 FeO and Al2O3 in the compositions of the metallurgical waste samples indicate that they have the potential for use as clinker materials in cement production. The iron and manganese contents from metallurgical wastes can be reused in the iron and steel industry. The presence of V2O5 and TiO2 is connected with the making of stainless steel, and for this reason they have the potential to be reused in the stainless steel industry. The predominant chemical compounds are SiO2, Fetotal, Cao and MgO. The mineralogical compositions were analyzed by the XRD (X-ray diffraction) technique. The mineralogical compounds presenting reuse potential in different domains are Fayalite, Magnetite, Magnesioferrite and Periclase. The mineralogical compounds from metallurgical wastes can be reused as: raw and/or additional materials in the process from which they originate (steelmaking); raw and/or additional materials in road construction and concrete production; pigments in paints; micronutrients in fertilizers; ore of iron, etc. Then, the theoretical assessments of the recovery potentials of the metals were estimated for slag dumps. Copper (Cu), vanadium (V), molybdenum (Mo) and nickel (Ni) have high recovery potential. The total economic value of the recovery potential of metals from slag dumps was assessed to be USD 1175.7440 million.

Through the approaches in this article, an attempt was made to analyze the bonding of Al-Cu bimetallic composite layers and the highlight of the diffusion at the boundary between the layers, by hot rolling. An aluminum alloy 6060 plate (EN-AW AlMgSi) and a Cu-ETP ½ hard (CW004A) plate were used. All of these layers of materials were TIG-welded, at both ends, into a heat-treated layered composite and subsequently subjected to the hot-rolling process. The Al-Cu composite material obtained was analyzed by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) analysis, after being subjected to the tensile test, as well as energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The obtained results highlighted the diffusion at the boundary between the layers of the Al-Cu composite as well as its ductile breakage and the distribution of the amount of Al and Cu at the interface of the layers.

The purpose of our paper is to assess the reuse potential of the steel mill scale for sustainable industrial applications. We have presented the experimental procedures for chemical and mineralogical characterizations. According to the results of the elementary chemical analysis, the steel mill scale contains the following predominant chemical elements: iron, aluminum, silicon, and magnesium. Due to its high iron content, the steel mill scale can be reused as a source of raw material in the sustainable steelmaking industry. The mineralogical phases identified in the steel mill scale are: wüstite (FeO), hematite (Fe2O3), magnetite (Fe3O4), silica (quartz) (SiO2), magnesioferitte (MgFe2O4), and aluminum oxide (corundum) (Al2O3). Silica, alumina, and hematite are the main compounds of the cement and contribute to the formation of the: dicalcium silicate (2CaO·SiO2), tricalcium silicate (3CaO·SiO2), tricalcium aluminate (3CaO·Al2O3), and tetra—calcium aluminoferrite (4CaO·Al2O3·Fe2O3). The results of the paper are promising and encourage the future research for establishing the optimal percentage for the reuse of the steel mill scale in the composition of concrete.

The rising concern for the environment and the need for a sustainable economic model has stimulated experimentation in the field of construction materials, notably in replacing certain components from cementitious materials with construction and demolition waste. The main objective of this study is to replace a significant proportion of natural aggregates with glass waste, in the composition of plastering mortars, and to observe the evolution of physical–mechanical characteristics in the fresh state: apparent density, consistency, and segregation tendency, and in the hardened state: apparent density, flexural strength, compression strength, and adhesion to the substrate, across time, at 3, 7, 14, and 28 days. SEM and EDX tests were also performed to observe the microscopical characteristics. The experimental program studied four types of plastering mortars: the reference mortar—CS IV, and three mortars in which aggregates have been replaced with glass waste in the following proportions, by mass: 15%, 30%, and 45%. Results obtained on fresh properties (apparent density and consistency) indicate a decrease in values as the percentage of glass increases, with the exception of the mortar with 30% aggregated glass replacement. The flexural strength and the compressive strength were improved by replacing 30% of the aggregates with glass waste and were not significantly impacted by a replacement of 15%. Mechanical properties decreased at a replacement level of 45%. All glass aggregate mortars had lower adhesion strength to the brick substrate than the reference mortar by up to 70%. SEM and EDX analyses showed the morphology of the studied mortars and the processes taking place to increase mechanical strength. Further research directions are proposed, including studying the glass particles, the occurrence of alkali–silica reactions, durability, and improvement of adhesion to the substrate, for progressing towards the most viable, locally sourced, waste-containing plastering mortar.

The management of waste, resulting in high amounts from different production processes, often raises special problems. This is also the case for sludge, generated in increasing amounts from the chemical pickling of steel pipes. This article presents the results of laboratory experiments regarding the micro filler effect of sludge generated by chemical pickling of steel pipes and analyzes its capacity to be a pozzolanic material. The study involved the performance of mechanical tests (specific surface of the powder; compressive mechanical strengths) and chemical tests (determination of the general chemical composition of cement and sludge using the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) method; determination of oxides in the chemical composition of sludge by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES); X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the sludge and cement used). This topic was addressed because recycling of sludge, by using it for the manufacture of new building materials, takes advantage of the waste resulting from the pickling of steel pipes that-until now-has generated large volumes without a specific use.

In the current framework of sustainable development, stricter international regulations are shaping waste management practices, particularly in the construction sector—one of the main generators of waste. This study investigates the reuse of deteriorated plaster waste from façades scheduled for rehabilitation, by partially replacing cement or aggregates in lime–cement mortars. Four mortar formulations were tested: a reference mix, one with 45% aggregate replacement by plaster waste, one with 10% cement replacement, and another combining the 45% aggregate replacement with polypropylene fibers. Both microstructural and macrostructural analyses were conducted to identify correlations between these levels when incorporating waste and fibers. Results show a decrease in compressive strength (36% for aggregate and 29% for cement replacement) and flexural strength (24% and 18%, respectively) as the replacement ratio increases. However, the inclusion of polypropylene fibers improved the mechanical performance. SEM analysis confirmed significant microstructural variations within the cementitious matrix due to waste incorporation. Despite reduced strength values, all mixtures remained within the limits defined by current standards, validating the feasibility of using plaster waste in mortars and emphasizing its potential to reduce construction waste and promote sustainable development.
