The Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) land surface temperature (LST) product has a long-term time series of data from 20 May 2002 to 8 April 2012 and is a crucial dataset for global change studies. Accuracy and uncertainty assessment of satellite derived LST is important for its use in studying land–surface–atmosphere interactions. However, the validation of AATSR-derived LST products is scarce in China, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. In this study, we evaluated the accuracy of the AATSR LST product using ground-based measurements from 2007 to 2011 in the Heihe River Basin (HRB), China. The AATSR-derived LST results over Yingke site are closer to ground measurements than those over A’rou site for both daytime and nighttime temperatures. For nighttime, the averaged bias, STD, RMSE and R2 over both sites are 0.67 K, 3.03 K, 3.13 K and 0.93 K, respectively. Based on the accuracy assessment, we analyzed the AATSR-derived annual LST variations both in the HRB region and the two validation sites for the period of 2003 to 2011. The results at the A’rou site show an obvious increasing trend for daytime from 2003 to 2011. For the whole HRB region, the warming trend is clearly shown in the downstream of HRB.

Satellite-derived rugged land surface temperature (LST) is an important parameter indicating the status of the Earth’s surface energy budget and its seasonal/temporal dynamic change. However, existing LST products from rugged areas are more prone to error when supporting applications in mountainous areas and Earth surface processes that occur at high spatial and temporal resolutions. This research aimed to develop a method for generating rugged LST with a high temporal and spatial resolution by using an improved ensemble LST model combining three regressors, including a random forest, a ridge, and a support vector machine. Different combinations of high-resolution input parameters were also considered in this study. The input datasets included Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LST datasets (MxD11A1) for nighttime, temporal Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI) datasets, and digital elevation model (DEM) datasets. The 30 m rugged LST datasets derived were compared against an in situ LST dataset obtained at Saihanba Forest Park (SFP) sites and an ASTER-derived 90 m LST, respectively. The results with in situ measurements demonstrated significant LST details, with an R2 higher than 0.95 and RMSE around 3.00 K for both Terra/MOD- and Aqua/MYD-based LST datasets, and with slightly better results being obtained from the Aqua/MYD-based LST than that from Terra/MOD. The inter-comparison results with ASTER LST showed that over 80% of the pixels of the difference image for the two datasets were within 2 K. In light of the complex topography and distinct atmospheric conditions, these comparison results are encouraging. The 30 m LST from the method proposed in this study also depicts the seasonality of rugged surfaces.

High-resolution land surface temperature (LST) data are essential for fine-scale urban thermal environment studies. Urban LST downscaling studies mostly remain focused on only two-dimensional (2-D) data, and neglect the impact of three-dimensional (3-D) surface structure on LST. In addition, the choice of window size is also important for LST downscaling over heterogeneous surfaces. In this study, we downscaled Landsat-LST using localized and stepwise approaches in a random forest model (RF). In addition, both 2- and 3-D building morphologies were included. Our results show that: (1) The performances of a local moving window and stepwise downscaling are dependent on the extent of surface heterogeneity. For mixed surfaces, a localized window performed better than the global window, and a stepwise approach performed better than a single-step approach. However, for monotonous surfaces (e.g., urban impervious surfaces), the global window performed better than a localized window; (2) That multi-scale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) could provide a possibility for selection of the optimal moving window. 7 × 7 windows derived from MGWR by the minimum bandwidth of predictors, performed better than other windows (3 × 3, 5 × 5, and 11 × 11) in the Beijing area; (3) That the morphology of buildings has a non-negligible impact and scaling effect on urban LST. When building morphologies were included in downscaling, the performance of the RF model improved. Furthermore, the importance of the sky view factor, building height, and building density was greater at a higher resolution than at a lower resolution.

Quantifying the progress and interactions of the 11 indicators of Sustainable Development Goal 11 plays a crucial role in improving urban living and promoting urban prosperity. SDG 11, focused on sustainable cities and communities, employs forward-thinking strategies to address challenges arising from urban prosperity and development, such as land scarcity and resource shortages. This paper positions the indicators of SDG 11, analyzing the patterns, trends, dynamics, and issues of urbanization development in Guilin using a combination of geospatial satellite resource data and categorical statistical data. The study introduces a framework and positioning method for assessing sustainable development at the city–county scale, exploring the current state, spatial aggregation, synergies, and trade-offs in the development of Guilin City. The study introduces a framework and positioning method for assessing sustainable development at the city–county scale. Utilizing a localized evaluation system, it explores the developmental status of Guilin City. The application of Moran’s Index observes spatial aggregation among entities. By investigating Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, it delves into the interplay of synergies and trade-offs within the studied region. Ultimately, it reveals significant disparities in the developmental landscape of the evaluated area, with a comprehensive spatial distribution indicating higher levels of development in the central and western regions and lower levels in the southeastern part. Strengthened cross-leverage and coordination are imperative to address the interconnections and harmonization of the developmental trends of the six synergistic indicators and nine trade-off indicators during the developmental process. The sustainable development of Guilin lays the groundwork for urban planning, construction, conservation, and management, positioning it as a potential model for successful sustainable development practices.

Sensible heat exchange has important consequences for urban meteorology and related applications. Directional radiometric surface temperatures of urban canopies observed by remote sensing platforms have the potential to inform estimations of urban sensible heat flux. An imaging radiometer viewing the surface from nadir cannot capture the complete urban surface temperature, which is defined as the mean surface temperature over all urban facets in three dimensions, which includes building wall surface temperatures and requires an estimation of urban sensible heat flux. In this study, a numerical microclimate model, Temperatures of Urban Facets in 3-D (TUF-3D), was used to model sensible heat flux as well as radiometric and complete surface temperatures. Model data were applied to parameterize an effective resistance for the calculation of urban sensible heat flux from the radiometric (nadir view) surface temperature. The results showed that sensible heat flux was overestimated during daytime when the radiometric surface temperature was used without the effective resistance that accounts for the impact of wall surface temperature on heat flux. Parameterization of this additional resistance enabled reasonably accurate estimates of urban sensible heat flux from the radiometric surface temperature.
