Free fatty acid (FFA) is one of the most critical parameters for evaluating the quality of olive oil. In this paper, we present a simple and rapid Raman spectroscopy method for analyzing free fatty acid in olive oil. First, FFA degradation of carotenoids in olive oil is confirmed by analyzing the relative intensity of characteristic vibrational modes and introducing an intensity decrease factor. Second, it is demonstrated that the relative intensity ratio of the two characteristic vibrational modes at 1525 cm−1 and 1655 cm−1 presents a good and rapid analysis of FFA content in olive oil; the relative intensity ratio decreases linearly with FFA content. In addition, resonance Raman scattering of carotenoid is discussed, showing that a green laser should be utilized to study FFA in olive oil.

Raman spectroscopy has been applied to study unsaturated fatty acid in edible vegetable oils. The relative intensity ratio of characteristic vibrational bands has been investigated as a function of the content of totally unsaturated fatty acid, polyunsaturated fatty acid, and monounsaturated fatty acid. The results suggest the intensity ratio of 1655 cm−1 to 1440 cm−1 or 1265 cm−1 to 1300 cm−1, i.e., a characteristic vibrational band correlated with carbon-carbon double bond in acid chain to a vibrational band not correlated with double bond, could be applied for preliminary analysis of the content of polyunsaturated fatty acid or monounsaturated fatty acid, but cannot be used to analyze the content of total unsaturated fatty acid. Additionally, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) has been performed on the content dependent Raman spectra. The 2DCOS result is consistent with that by Raman spectroscopy.

Metal/semiconductor hybrids show potential application in fields of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and photocatalysis due to their excellent light absorption, electric field, and charge-transfer properties. Herein, a WO3-Au metal/semiconductor hybrid, which was a WO3 nanobrick decorated with Au nanoparticles, was prepared via a facile hydrothermal method. The WO3-Au hybrids show excellent visible light absorption, strong plasmon coupling, high-performance SERS, and good photocatalytic activity. In particular, on sensing rhodamine B (RhB) under 532 nm excitation, bare WO3 nanobricks have a Raman enhancement factor of 2.0 × 106 and a limit of detection of 10–8 M due to the charger-transfer property and abundant oxygen vacancies. WO3-Au metal/semiconductor hybrids display a largely improved Raman enhancement factor compared to pure Au and WO3 components owing to the synergistic effect of electromagnetic enhancement and charge transfer. The Raman enhancement factor and limit of detection are further improved, reaching 5.3 × 108 and 10–12 M, respectively, on increasing the content of Au to 2.1 wt %, owing to the strong plasmon coupling between the Au nanoparticles. Additionally, the WO3-Au hybrids also exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity toward degradation of RhB under visible light irradiation. WO3-Au (2.1 wt %) possesses the fastest photocatalytic rate, which is 6.1 and 2.0 times that of pure WO3 nanobricks and commercial P25, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to the strong plasmon coupling and the efficient charge transfer between Au and WO3 nanobricks. The as-prepared materials show great potential in detecting and degrading pollutants in environmental treatment.

In this paper, we introduce an innovative approach to multi-focus image fusion by leveraging the concepts of fractal dimension and coupled neural P (CNP) systems in nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) domain. This method is designed to overcome the challenges posed by the limitations of camera lenses and depth-of-field effects, which often prevent all parts of a scene from being simultaneously in focus. Our proposed fusion technique employs CNP systems with a local topology-based fusion model to merge the low-frequency components effectively. Meanwhile, for the high-frequency components, we utilize the spatial frequency and fractal dimension-based focus measure (FDFM) to achieve superior fusion performance. The effectiveness of the method is validated through extensive experiments conducted on three benchmark datasets: Lytro, MFI-WHU, and MFFW. The results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed multi-focus image fusion method, showcasing its potential to significantly enhance image clarity across the entire scene. Our algorithm has achieved advantageous values on metrics QAB/F, QCB, QCV, QE, QFMI, QG, QMI, and QNCIE.

Phosphorite is a nonrenewable strategic resource, a convenient and rapid method of phosphorite grade identification and classification is important to improve phosphate utilization. In this study, Raman spectroscopy has been combined with principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis (PCA-HCA) and orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) models for an investigation of different grade phosphorite samples. Both the PCA-HCA and OPLS-DA models showed that different grade phosphorite samples can be clearly distinguished by statistically analyzing the Raman spectra after smoothing, baseline correction, and first derivation. In addition, the S-line study on the OPLS-DA model clearly demonstrated that the symmetrical stretching vibrational mode of phosphate near 960 cm−1 had a much more significant contribution than other vibrational modes for the differentiation of different grade phosphorite samples.

Magnonics, an emerging research field, aims to control and manipulate spin waves in magnetic materials and structures. However, the current understanding of spin waves remains quite limited. This review attempts to provide an overview of the anomalous behaviors of spin waves in various types of magnetic materials observed thus far by inelastic light scattering experiments. The anomalously large asymmetry of anti-Stokes to Stokes intensity ratio, broad linewidth, strong resonance effect, unique polarization selection, and abnormal impurity dependence of spin waves are discussed. In addition, the mechanisms of these anomalous behaviors of spin waves are proposed.
