In modern agriculture, on large-scale farms using monoculture, reduced tillage and intense chemical protection, the phenomenon of herbicide resistance in weeds is the cause of ecological and economic losses. More and more attempts are made to answer the question about the profitability of reducing agrotechnical treatments and intensifying chemical methods of weed control with a simultaneous intensification of the problem of herbicide resistance in weeds occurring in winter wheat crops, which dominates the structure of cereal sowing in Poland. The main objective of the study was to evaluate the costs of weed control for winter wheat cultivation on large-scale farms where there was no problem of weed resistance and on farms where resistant biotypes were identified. The research was based on a survey conducted among owners of farms cultivating winter wheat in 2019. The collected data were elaborated using basic methods of descriptive statistics and economic analysis. Based on the research results, it was found that with an increase in the area of farms, reduced tillage and monoculture are used more frequently than conventional tillage and crop rotation. At the same time, the commonly used chemical weed control methods are more frequently applied than mechanical ones. Economic efficiency indicators for winter wheat protection against weeds indicate a decrease in this efficiency with an increase in farm size. This is because the larger the farms, the more frequently the occurrence of resistant weed biotypes, which was confirmed by laboratory tests, and farmers more often assumed that such a problem occurred on their farms

Linear ordering methods with ideal solutions may sometimes suffer from identification problems when determining the development levels of examined objects. These problems manifest themselves in the form of inconsistencies between the range of the constructed synthetic measure and the development level of the complex phenomenon it should depict—especially, when the measure’s low values are assigned to objects with obviously high level of development. Such inconsistencies often arise when simple features are strongly skewed—which is the case of the financial autonomy of the second-level local administrative units (communes) that is described by a number of asymmetric financial indicators. The aim of the research was to pose the problem of identifying levels of financial autonomy of Polish communes—assessed by synthetic measures constructed with ideal solution methods such as Hellwig’s and TOPSIS—and to present proposals to resolve it. Two variants of the classical Hellwig’s and TOPSIS methods were analyzed: standard and with correction of ideal values by the quartile criterion. Additionally, the positional TOPSIS method was also considered. It was found that with the standard classical methods or the positional TOPSIS, the prevalence of asymmetric simple features would reduce the range of the synthetic measure and shift it toward lower values. The variants with correction of ideal values had the range much broader and more centered, the broadest in the case of the corrected TOPSIS method. This contributed to the improvement of consistency between the identified levels of the communes financial autonomy and the synthetic measure values assigned to them.

Seed treatments help reduce the pathogen load and thus improve the condition of plants from their earliest developmental stages, but they can have impacts beyond their basic fungicide protection role. In this study, we investigated how seven spring barley seed treatments affected the plants’ physiological state. The tested seed treatments differed significantly in their impacts on the vigor parameters of barley seeds and on the physiological state of seedlings under drought stress and after regeneration. Seed treatments based on substances from the succinate-dehydrogenase-inhibitors (SDHI) group did not cause inhibition of seedling growth and also display by the highest vigor index values. Using the analysis of photosynthesis-related parameters, we showed that seed treatments from the SDHI group provided a superior tolerance of the imposed drought in spring barley than other treatments. In addition to protection against abiotic stress, SDHI treatments also rendered a higher efficiency of photochemical reactions in the treated plants.

The study aimed to assess the investment potential of the rural communes of Wielkopolska province in 2009-2017 and compare it with other administrative types of communes. Additionally, among all the rural communes a separate group located in the Metropolitan Area of Poznań (MAP) was distinguished. The study drew on data from the Local Data Bank maintained by the Central Statistical Office and on the database of indicators assessing the financial condition of local administrative units published by the Ministry of Finance. Descriptive statistics were used to compare the level of investment potential between communes, and dynamic statistics to measure changes in the phenomenon over time. An attempt was also made to assess the relationship between the investment potential of communes and the actual level of their investment expenditures. The investment potential of the Wielkopolska province was found highest among rural communes of the Metropolitan Area of Poznań, which inflated its average levels for all rural communes. The observed course of potential – its decline up until 2013 and subsequent growth – was related to EU budget perspectives 2007-2013 and 2014-2020. Moreover, the relationship between investment potential and investment expenditures was statistically significant only in urban and metropolitan rural communes.

Integrated pest management (IPM), a worldwide agricultural strategy, contains methods to control or manage agricultural pests and diseases in a more efficient way, and consequently, to obtain better quality raw materials for food production. The engagement and practice of farmers play a key role in the success of this strategy. Since January 1, 2014, Poland and other European Union countries have been obligated to apply the principles of IPM. This paper shows the results of surveys conducted in 280 randomly selected farms the year before and the year following mandatory IPM implementation. The aim of this study was to gather information about farmers’ knowledge of IPM and the most commonly used plant protection methods. Our results show that law regulations do not significantly change agricultural practice. Among the non-chemical methods farmers most often comply with are: implementing the agrochemical calendar, sowing healthy material, destroying volunteer plants, rotating crop, applying balanced fertilizer, plowing stubble and preventing excess nitrogen. Integrated plant protection is not possible without proper knowledge of diseases. This factor needs improvement in Poland. The average Polish farmer lacks the knowledge about basic cereal diseases such as powdery mildew or brown rust, though larger farm operators tend to be more knowledgeable. The results of this survey demonstrate the necessity to provide informative farmer training campaigns to promote on-farm application of IPM and to improve the knowledge of disease issues.

The main purpose of the article is to assess the economic efficiency of wheat protection in conditions of the occurrence of weed resistance to herbicides in a selected large-scale farm (case study). In modern agriculture, especially in large-scale farms using monoculture, zero tillage and intensive chemical protection, the emerging phenomenon of weed resistance to herbicides is a cause of ecological and economic losses. In Poland, as well as the world, the problem of weed resistance is mainly noted in the case of wheat cultivation, which is ranked first in terms of sown area. Therefore, more and more often attempts are being made to answer the question, what is the profitability of performed weed control operations with the simultaneous occurrence of herbicide resistance. Empirical research was conducted on the basis of data recorded in the book of profits and losses recorded by the farm owner in 2014-2018. The collected data was developed using economic analysis and statistical methods. It was found that, in the examined period, due to the growing problem of the presence of resistant weeds, the use of products to control them increased and the costs of protecting wheat cultivation also increased. The low effectiveness of chemical weed control treatments resulted in a change in the structure of crops in the researched farm in the last year of the study.

A reduction in biodiversity due to farming operations has been broadly reported. As a solution, policy makers in the European Union have introduced several programs in recent years to enhance biodiversity on farms but these have met with only limited success. One of the main reasons for this lack of success is that the experience, knowledge and attitudes of farmers are not taken into account when biodiversity conservation programs are formulated. Farmers’ opinions must be taken into consideration in the creation of future programs, which should also include an assessment by the farmers of the value of the nature of their farms. In this study, farmers were asked to express their opinion on the attractiveness of their farm in relation to pollinators, game, birds, amphibians, reptiles, rodents and non-crop (wild) plants. Data were then analysed using a novel method in which each farm was assigned to one of four categories. High nature-value farms contained more natural features in the landscape, such as individual trees or ponds. Socio-economic factors, such as gender, also influenced the farm assessments; female farmers were more critical compared to their male counterparts. The establishment of field margins or watercourse by the farmers significantly increased the possibility that the farm would be classified as attractive.

The aim of the study was to compare the housing conditions of the population living in rural and urban areas of Wielkopolska province communes. The multidimensional assessment of housing conditions was carried out using the TOPSIS method. The research drew on 2016 data published by the Central Statistical Office in the Local Data Bank. The housing conditions in rural areas of the Wielkopolska province were found to be significantly worse than in urban areas. Over 38% of all examined urban areas and only 5% of rural areas (mainly located in the Poznań Metropolitan Area) were classified as Class I with the highest level of housing conditions. Class IV – with the lowest level of housing conditions – included as many as 25% of rural areas and only one urban area located in a mixed, urban-rural commune. In many of the studies, dynamic, beneficial changes in housing conditions in rural areas are emphasized despite the continuous worse situation of rural areas compared to cities. However, due to the observed suburbanisation processes in rural areas in the vicinity of large urban agglomerations, it would be necessary to distinguish living transformations in these rural areas, from changes in housing conditions in rural areas that perform typical agricultural functions.

The research aims at isolating and describing groups of rural gminas in Wielkopolskie voivodship with comparable financial autonomy and similar internal determinants in 2013. Furthermore, it allows to examine relations between the financial indicators and the socio-economic determinants. The PCA (Principal Component Analysis) biplot was used in the research. Data published by the Local Data Bank of the CSO and the Ministry of Finance was applied as a study informational basis. It was found that the highest level of financial autonomy was observed in the group of rural gminas close to the capital city of the voivodship. These gminas were distinguished by such determinants as net migration, percentage of inhabitants using sewage and gas supply system, as well as density and occupancy rate of accommodation establishments.

The aim of the research was to diagnose demographic changes that took place in the rural areas of the Wielkopolska province between 2005 and 2015. The study identified rural areas that were located within the boundaries of the Poznań Metropolitan Area and beyond this area. The research was based on data from the Central Statistical Office and the Statistical Office in Poznań. As a result of the conducted research, it was observed that demographic changes in the rural areas of Wielkopolska province such as population growth or changes in population structure by place of residence or economic age groups are largely caused by migration movements. In the analyzed period there was an influx of population into rural areas (positive migration balance), although in recent years a slight inhibition of this phenomenon has been observed. In addition, there was a slight increase in positive natural growth. More dynamic changes have been observed in rural areas within the Poznan Metropolitan Area. In the studied period, changes in the opposite direction were observed in cities, ie the decrease in the number of inhabitants and in birthrate, as well as the increase in emigration from cities (decrease of the negative migration balance).

The main aim of this article is to identify and assess changes in housing poverty in the European Union (EU) in 2005 and 2013 in the context of cohesion policy. In he study of spatial differentiation of housing poverty, a synthetic measure was used. It was created with support of the TOPSIS standard method (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution). The article is prepared on the basis of statistical data from the EU-SILC surveys. The study shows that in 2013 compared to 2005, there was a significant reduction in housing poverty, especially in the EU countries which in 2005 were characterized by the highest level of poverty. However, in Romania and Latvia, high level of poverty was still maintained, particularly in comparison with the countries of Western Europe.
