High-performance packet classification algorithms have been widely studied during the past decade. Bit-Vector-based algorithms proposed for FPGA can achieve very high throughput by decomposing rules delicately. However, the relatively large memory resources consumption severely hinders applications of the algorithms extensively. It is noteworthy that, in the Bit-Vector-based algorithms, stringent memory resources in FPGA are wasted to store relatively plenty of useless wildcards in the rules. We thus present a memory-optimized packet classification scheme named WeeBV to eliminate the memory occupied by the wildcards. WeeBV consists of a heterogeneous two-dimensional lookup pipeline and an optimized heuristic algorithm for searching all the wildcard positions that can be removed. It can achieve a significant reduction in memory resources without compromising the high throughput of the original Bit-Vector-based algorithms. We implement WeeBV and evaluate its performance by simulation and FPGA prototype. Experimental results show that our approach can save 37% and 41% memory consumption on average for synthetic 5-tuple rules and OpenFlow rules respectively.

Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is widely used in real-time network processing such as Software-Defined Networking (SDN) switch due to high performance and programmability. Bit-Vector (BV)-based approaches can implement high-performance multi-field packet classification, on FPGA, which is the core function of the SDN switch. However, the SDN switch requires not only high performance but also low update latency to avoid controller failure. Unfortunately, the update latency of BV-based approaches is inversely proportional to the number of rules, which means can hardly support the SDN switch effectively. It is reasonable to split the ruleset into sub-rulesets that can be performed in parallel, thereby reducing update latency. We thus present SplitBV for the efficient update by using several distinguishable exact-bits to split the ruleset. SplitBV consists of a constrained recursive algorithm for selecting the bit positions that can minimize the latency and a hybrid lookup pipeline. It can achieve a significant reduction in update latency with negligible memory growth and comparable high performance. We implement SplitBV and evaluate its performance by simulation and FPGA prototype. Experimental results show that our approach can reduce 73% and 36% update latency on average for synthetic 5-tuple rules and OpenFlow rules respectively.

OpenFlow switches hardware cannot store all the OpenFlow rules due to a limited resource. The rule-caching scheme is one of the best solutions to solve the hardware size limitation. In OpenFlow switches, Multiple Flow Tables (MFTs) provide more flexible flow control than a single table. Exact match and wildcard match are two typical matching methods. The exact match applies to a single flow table and multiple flow tables, but the performance is low under frequently changing traffic. Many commodity switches use Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM) to support fast wildcard lookups. Earlier works on wildcard-match rule-caching focus on the dependency problem caused by the overlaps of match fields. Their designs cannot handle the rule-caching problem of MFTs because they are based on a single flow table, instead of the widely used MFTs structure. So, we propose a new design named PipeCache that solves the problem of MFTs rule-caching scheme based on wildcard-match. In our design, we logically split the TCAM resources, and assign them to each flow table according to the size of each flow table. Each flow table will cache the selected rules into their assigned TCAM resources and be updated in time by our algorithms to make the most use of the limited TCAM resources. We compare our structure with the exact-match scheme and the wildcard-match scheme based on a single flow table under different cache sizes and traffic localities. Experiment results show that our design PipeCache improves cache hit rate by up to 18.2% compared to the exact-match scheme and by up to 21.2% compared to the wildcard-match scheme based on a single flow table.

Distributed real-time systems (DRTS) composed of many embedded end-systems have been widely adopted in the industrial fields. Time-sensitive Networking (TSN), as a promising communication infrastructure for DRTS, has shown great potential in industry and academia. TSN assumes that an end-system can release critical tasks to process critical packets strictly according to the pre-scheduled time. Unfortunately, two factors currently damage this assumption: (1) the jitter caused by system architecture during task release, task execution and packet transmission; (2) a TSN schedule result may exceed the execution capability of the end-system and cause conflicts. This paper proposed DetChip, a system-on-chip capable of deterministically implementing the TSN schedule result. DetChip supports time-triggered task release, time-predictable task execution and precise network transmission. Based on DetChip, this paper first formalizes the execution capability of the end-system as end-system constraints (ECs). Existing TSN scheduling algorithms integrating ECs can solve conflicts by co-scheduling end-systems and the TSN network. Compared with previous works, DetChip only introduces few clock cycles jitter for critical task execution according to the TSN schedule result. The proposed ECs obtain 2 8x more conflict-free solutions for advanced scheduling algorithms with a linear increase in time overhead. Compared with the general end-system, DetChip can reduce 6 20x processing jitter to achieve better clock synchronization.

The existing, authoritative DNS servers process DNS requests and response packets depending on the software network protocol stack, which use DNS resources and have high overhead and limited processing performance. Based on the SmartNIC architecture, this paper quickens the unloading of DNS authority server and proposes and designs a high-performance DNS authority query response pipeline PHDR_ Pipe (Perfect Hash DNS Response Pipeline), which realizes the preprocessing of region files based on perfect Hash. To avoid multiple memory access, caused by Hash collision, and reduce the processing delay in the worst case of a pipeline, the system throughput is effectively improved and reduces the response delay. The experimental results based on the open-source FAST platform show that the response latency is reduced by approximately 10 times compared with the general BIND9 system, and the throughput is near the 10 Gb link-line speed. Moreover, the resource overhead is small, and the system is scalable.
