This study introduces a novel population-based metaheuristic algorithm called secretary bird optimization algorithm (SBOA), inspired by the survival behavior of secretary birds in their natural environment. Survival for secretary birds involves continuous hunting for prey and evading pursuit from predators. This information is crucial for proposing a new metaheuristic algorithm that utilizes the survival abilities of secretary birds to address real-world optimization problems. The algorithm's exploration phase simulates secretary birds hunting snakes, while the exploitation phase models their escape from predators. During this phase, secretary birds observe the environment and choose the most suitable way to reach a secure refuge. These two phases are iteratively repeated, subject to termination criteria, to find the optimal solution to the optimization problem. To validate the performance of SBOA, experiments were conducted to assess convergence speed, convergence behavior, and other relevant aspects. Furthermore, we compared SBOA with 15 advanced algorithms using the CEC-2017 and CEC-2022 benchmark suites. All test results consistently demonstrated the outstanding performance of SBOA in terms of solution quality, convergence speed, and stability. Lastly, SBOA was employed to tackle 12 constrained engineering design problems and perform three-dimensional path planning for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. The results demonstrate that, compared to contrasted optimizers, the proposed SBOA can find better solutions at a faster pace, showcasing its significant potential in addressing real-world optimization problems.
In concept design, effective decision making and management of schemes can shorten the design cycle and improve product quality. The decision maker (DM)’s confidence is one of the critical factors affecting the conceptual design evaluation. Although many studies use quantitative linguistic evaluation for design scheme decision-making, which improves product conceptual design decision-making efficiency and effectiveness, few studies consider the confidence level of a decision. A conceptual design evaluation method based on Z-numbers is proposed to solve this problem, considering the customer requirements and the DM’s confidence. Firstly, the evaluation criteria are determined by analyzing customer requirements; then, the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process in the Z-numbers environment (Z-AHP) is used to determine the criteria weight; Finally, the fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution method in the Z-numbers environment (Z-TOPSIS) is used to evaluate the design schemes to obtain the optimal scheme. The proposed method is applied to the selection of the design scheme of the waste containers in the kitchen. The results show that considering the DM’s self-confidence can achieve a more reasonable and practical evaluation of the conceptual design scheme, and it is easier to obtain the best scheme.
In a small sample welding test space, and to achieve online prediction and self-optimisation of process parameters for the resistance welding joint quality of power lithium battery packs, this paper proposes a welding quality prediction model. The model combines a chaos game optimisation algorithm (CGO) with the multi-output least-squares support vector regression machine (MLSSVR), and a multi-objective process parameter optimisation method based on a particle swarm algorithm. First, the MLSSVR model was constructed, and a hyperparameter optimisation strategy based on CGO was designed. Next, the welding quality was predicted using the CGO–MLSSVR prediction model. Finally, the particle swarm algorithm (PSO) was used to obtain the optimal welding process parameters. The experimental results show that the CGO–MLSSVR prediction model can effectively predict the positive and negative electrode nugget diameters, and tensile shear loads, with root mean square errors of 0.024, 0.039, and 5.379, respectively, which is better than similar methods. The average relative error in weld quality for the optimal welding process parameters is within 4%, and the proposed method has a good application value in the resistance spot welding of power lithium battery packs.
Effective feature selection can help improve the classification performance in bearing fault diagnosis. This paper proposes a novel feature selection method based on bearing fault diagnosis called Feature-to-Feature and Feature-to-Category- Maximum Information Coefficient (FF-FC-MIC), which considers the relevance among features and relevance between features and fault categories by exploiting the nonlinearity capturing capability of maximum information coefficient. In this method, a weak correlation feature subset obtained by a Feature-to-Feature-Maximum Information Coefficient (FF-MIC) matrix and a strong correlation feature subset obtained by a Feature-to-Category-Maximum Information Coefficient (FC-MIC) matrix are merged into a final diagnostic feature set by an intersection operation. To evaluate the proposed FF-FC-MIC method, vibration data collected from two bearing fault experiment platforms (CWRU dataset and CUT-2 dataset) were employed. Experimental results showed that accuracy of FF-FC-MIC can achieve 97.50%, and 98.75% on the CWRU dataset at the motor speeds of 1750 rpm, and 1772 rpm, respectively, and reach 91.75%, 94.69%, and 99.07% on CUT-2 dataset at the motor speeds of 2000 rpm, 2500 rpm, 3000 rpm, respectively. A significant improvement of FF-FC-MIC has been confirmed, since the p-values between FF-FC-MIC and the other methods are 1.166 × , 2.509 × , and 3.576 × , respectively. Through comparison with other methods, FF-FC-MIC not only exceeds each of the baseline feature selection method in diagnosis accuracy, but also reduces the number of features.
Plasma electrolytic oxidation processing is a novel promising surface modification approach for various materials. However, its large-scale application is still restricted, mainly due to the problem of high energy consumption of the plasma electrolytic oxidation processing. In order to solve this problem, a novel intelligent self-adaptive control technology based on real-time active diagnostics and on the precision adjustment of the process parameters was developed. Both the electrical characteristics of the plasma electrolytic oxidation process and the microstructure of the coating were investigated. During the plasma electrolytic oxidation process, the discharges are maintained in the soft-sparking regime and the coating exhibits a good uniformity and compactness. A total specific energy consumption of 1.8 kW h m−2 μm−1 was achieved by using such self-adaptive plasma electrolytic oxidation processing on pre-anodized 6061 aluminum alloy samples.
