Xunyang is rich in various metal minerals and is one of the four major metal mining areas in Shaanxi province, China. To explore the effects of soil heavy metals and metalloid pollution on the environment and human health around the mining areas, four places—Donghecun (D), Gongguan (G), Qingtonggou (Q) and Nanshagou (N)—were selected as the sampling sites. Potential ecological risk (PER) and health risk assessment (HRA) models were used to analyze the environmental and health risks around the mining areas. The concentration of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cu, Hg) and metalloid (As) in cultivated land in the vicinity of Xunyang mining areas indicated that, except for Cu, the remaining elements detected exceeded the threshold values at some sites. The geo-accumulation index (IGeo) revealed that soils in G and Q could be identified as being extremely contaminated. PER indicated that there was significantly high risk at G and Q for Hg. In N, Pb recorded the highest E r i , which also demonstrates a considerable pre-existing risk. HRA indicated that the hazard index (HI) for both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks was much higher among children than among adults, and the ingestion pathway contributed the greatest risk to human health, followed by the dermal pathway and inhalation. Because the HI values of the metals and metalloid in the study areas were all lower than 1, there was no significant non-carcinogenic risk. However, the carcinogenic risk for Cr is relatively higher, surpassing the tolerable values in G, Q, and N. This study analyzed the ecological risks and human health risks of heavy metals and metalloid in farmland soils near the sampling mining areas, and demonstrated the importance of environmental changes caused by land development in the mining industry.

In arid and semi-arid regions, desertification threatens crop production because it reduces the soil’s capacity to retain water and soil nutrients. At two fertilizer levels (90 kg N hm−2 and 45 kg P hm−2 and 270 kg N hm−2 and 135 kg P hm−2), the effects of soft rock (sand: soft rocks = 3:1) and biochar (4500 kg hm−2) applications on soil moisture, soil nutrients, and millet (Setaria italica L.) photosynthesis, yield, and its agronomic traits (biomass, thousand kernel weight, harvest index) were investigated in a field experiment in the Mu Us Sandy Land of China in 2018–2019. The addition of biochar and soft rock singly increased soil water content, alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen (AN), total nitrogen (TN) and phosphorus (TP), and organic matter content significantly, suggesting that their application may increase the nutrient and water holding capacity of soil. Application of biochar and soft rock singly increased the net photosynthesis rate of millet flag leaf, at the flowering stage, from 15.97% to 56.26%. Biochar and soft rock application increased the yield range (2109.0 kg hm−2 to 5024.7 kg hm−2) from 5.26% to 54.60% under the same fertilizer level. Correlation analyses showed grain yield was significantly correlated with photosynthesis rate at the flowering stage, which was significantly correlated with soil AN at flowering, soil TP at flowering and harvest, and soil TN at flowering. These results indicated that the application of biochar and soft rock singly could increase soil fertilizer holding capacity to improve the photosynthesis rate at flowering, and, therefore, lead to improvements in crop yield.

Understanding the changes in phenotype resulting from the selection pressure and agronomic adaptation of grain yield provide an indication of the pathways for future increases in grain yield. Six dry land representative winter wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) released from 1942 to 2004 in the Loess Plateau of China were investigated to determine how the yield components of winter wheat were associated with grain yield at the Changwu Agricultural Research Station during the 2011–2012 and 2012–2013 seasons, using a completely randomized block design with three replicates. Plant height, aboveground biomass, grain yield, and yield components were measured, together with the traits of superior and inferior grains and the pre-anthesis stored dry matter remobilized to the grain was determined. In the relatively wet 2011–2012 season, there was a significant increase in grain yield and aboveground biomass with the year of release, but not in the dry 2012–2013 season. The harvest index (HI) and average grain weight (AGW) increased significantly with the year of release in both cropping seasons. HI and AGW are likely potential traits for improving grain yield of winter wheat in the Loess Plateau. The increase in HI mainly resulted from the decrease in plant height, and the increase in the use of pre-anthesis stored assimilates for grain filling. The increase in AGW mainly resulted from the increase in the proportion of superior grain (SG) and the decrease in the proportion of inferior grain (IG) in the whole spike in both cropping seasons. Depending on the climatic conditions, the different winter wheat cultivars showed different ability to use pre-anthesis stored assimilates. Modern wheat cultivars had higher yield under different rainfall conditions, and high ability to use pre-anthesis stored assimilates to fill the grain than earlier released cultivars. Both, the increase in sink capacity and source availability, should be considered as a strategy for increasing future grain yield in Loess Plateau of China.

Aggregate stability is a key factor in the evaluation of soil structure and erosion resistance, which is largely influenced by soil electric field and particle interaction. However, there are few studies on how different organic and inorganic soil conditioners change the surface electric field and interaction force of reclaimed soil to improve the aggregate stability. Therefore, a five-year field experiment was conducted to quantitatively study the effects of FeSO4 (TM), organic fertilizer (TO), fly ash (TF), maturing agent + organic fertilizer (TMO) and fly ash + organic fertilizer (TFO), compared with control (CK) treatment, on the reclaimed soil internal force and the aggregate crushing strength. The results showed that the reclaimed soil surface potential and electric field intensity increased after 5 years of application of organic and inorganic soil conditioners. Under the same electrolyte concentration and electric field conditions, the crushing strength of aggregates (<5 μm) treated with TFO, TMO, TO, TF and TM decreased by 43.70%, 35.51%, 25.97%, 8.28% and 5.49%, respectively, compared with the control treatment, and the combination of organic and inorganic treatment (TFO and TMO) had a better effect on improving the aggregate crushing resistance. With the application of soil conditioners, the reclaimed soil DLVO force and net resultant force gradually decreased, and the order of magnitude was TFO < TMO < TO < TF < TM < CK, indicating that the application of organic and inorganic soil conditioners enhanced the van der Waals attractive force and net attractive force between reclaimed soil particles, and reduced the net repulsive force between particles. The theoretical calculation results of the reclaimed soil internal force well explain the experimental results of aggregate stability against crushing, and the relationship between aggregate crushing strength and net resultant force is exponential (p < 0.01). Generally speaking, the soil conditioners increase the net attractive force between particles, reduce the possibility of violent crushing of aggregates due to the increase of electric field intensity and improve the aggregate structural stability, among which the combined application of organic and inorganic soil conditioners has a better improvement effect. The results of this study will lay a theoretical foundation for clarifying the improvement of different soil conditioners on the reclaimed soil structural stability and erosion resistance.

Drip irrigation technology, known for its advantages in high water use efficiency and yield increase, has been a focal point of research regarding its combined effects with the plastic film-mulching technique on field water consumption and crop growth. To accurately quantify the water-saving effect of plastic film-mulching techniques and investigate the mechanisms of mulching on evaporation (E) and transpiration (T), this study was conducted on soybean using the Bowen ratio–energy balance system and micro-lysimeters as the observation means and the MSW model as the data partitioning tool, during 2019–2021 in arid northwest China. We compared evapotranspiration (ET) under the film-mulched drip irrigation (FM) and non-mulched drip irrigation (NM) treatments. The results show that ET, E, and T under FM were reduced by 32.6 mm, 76.1 mm, and −43.5 mm, respectively. Moreover, mulching increased the leaf area index (LAI) by 20.7%, soybean yield from 2727.0 kg ha−1 to 3250.5 kg ha−1, and WUE from 0.64 kg m−3 to 0.83 kg m−3 on average, which means mulching reduced water consumption in the field by decreasing soil evaporation and improved water use efficiency by promoting crop growth. Further analysis indicated that mulching has strengthened the connection between soil temperature and humidity and weakened the effect of soil temperature on soybean leaf growth. Soil water content (SWC) and LAI had a direct negative effect on E, with LAI causing a stronger effect on E under the FM treatment. Mulching has weakened the direct effect of SWC on T, so that only LAI and soil temperature had a significant direct positive effect on T. Following the rapid growth of soybean LAI, the isolating effect of the mulch was gradually replaced by the dense leaf canopy. The results provide a reference for further exploring the water-saving and yield-increasing benefits of plastic film-mulching techniques, and to facilitate wider promotion of the plastic film-mulching techniques and the water–fertilizer integration technology in arid regions.
