As a potential approach for enhanced energy generation from anaerobic digestion, iron-based conductive nanoparticles have been proposed to enhance the methane production yield and rate. In this study, the impact of two different types of iron nanoparticles, namely the nano-zero-valent-iron particles (NZVIs) and magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (NPs) was investigated, using batch test under mesophilic conditions (35 °C). Magnetite NPs have been applied in doses of 25, 50 and 80 mg/L, corresponding to 13.1, 26.2 and 41.9 mg magnetite NPs/gTS of substrate, respectively. The results reveal that supplementing anaerobic batches with magnetite NPs at a dose of 25 mg/L induces an insignificant effect on hydrolysis and methane production. However, incubation with 50 and 80 mg/L magnetite NPs have instigated comparable positive impact with hydrolysis percentages reaching approximately 95% compared to 63% attained in control batches, in addition to a 50% enhancement in methane production yield. A biodegradability percentage of 94% was achieved with magnetite NP doses of 50 and 80 mg/L, compared to only 62.7% obtained with control incubation. NZVIs were applied in doses of 20, 40 and 60 mg/L, corresponding to 10.8, 21.5 and 32.2 mg NZVIs/gTS of substrate, respectively. The results have shown that supplementing anaerobic batches with NZVIs revealed insignificant impact, most probably due to the agglomeration of NZVI particles and consequently the reduction in available surface area, making the applied doses insufficient for measurable effect.

Supplementation with iron oxide nanoparticles has been suggested as a potential method for improving energy generation through anaerobic digestion, specifically by enhancing the rate of methane production. This investigation examined the effects of iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (NPs) on anaerobic co-digestion of cow manure (CM) and sewage sludge (SS) through batch testing conducted under mesophilic conditions (35 °C) using a RESPIROMETRIC Sensor System 6 Maxi—BMP (RSS-BMP). The use of Fe3O4 nanoparticles at doses of 40, 80, 120, and 160 mg/L (batches M1, M2, M3, and M5) was studied. The use of 160 mg/L Fe3O4 nanoparticles in combination with mixtures of different ratios (M4, M5, and M6) was further investigated. The findings indicate that the addition of Fe3O4 nanoparticles at a concentration of 40 mg/L to anaerobic batches did not significantly impact the hydrolysis process and subsequent methane production. Exposing the samples to Fe3O4 NPs at concentrations of 80, 120, and 160 mg/L resulted in a similar positive effect, as evidenced by hydrolysis percentages of approximately 94%, compared to 60% for the control (C2). Furthermore, methane production also increased. The use of Fe3O4 nanoparticles at a concentration of 160 mg/L resulted in biodegradability of 97.3%, compared to 51.4% for the control incubation (C2). Moreover, the findings demonstrate that supplementing anaerobic batches with 160 mg/L Fe3O4 NPs at varying mixture ratios (M4, M5, and M6) had a significant impact on both hydrolysis and methane production. Specifically, hydrolysis percentages of 94.24, 98.74, and 96.78% were achieved for M4, M5, and M6, respectively, whereas the percentages for the control incubation (C1, C2, and C3) were only 56.78, 60.21, and 58.74%. Additionally, the use of 160 mg/L Fe3O4 NPs in mixtures M4, M5, and M6 resulted in biodegradability percentages of 78.4, 97.3, and 88.3%, respectively. In contrast, for the control incubation (C1, C2, and C3) biodegradability was only 44.24, 51.4, and 49.1%.

Landfilling and incineration are the most widely used methods for the management and treatment of fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) in Mediterranean markets, despite their potential environmental impact. A comparative life cycle assessment was conducted in this study to evaluate the environmental improvements from replacing the current landfill disposal method for FVW management and treatment in the wholesale market of Amman (Jordan) with an integrated anaerobic digestion process followed by composting. The proposed FVW treatment scenario is the best treatment option for all the assessed impact categories under the system expansion approach. Significant reductions in global warming and terrestrial ecotoxicity impacts categories would be achieved, reaching up to 322% and 352%, respectively, when compared to the current treatment scenario. Furthermore, the higher production of electrical energy (413%), as well as the production of co-products that would avoid the production of 100 kg/d of inorganic fertilizers, would contribute to such a low value of avoided impacts.
