Expandable and flexible wireless power transfer (WPT) systems have been in demand in numerous industry applications, especially for dynamic chargers in electric vehicles. Those systems, however, brings about certain technical issues such as modulation technique and topology of the transmitter-side, and transferred power profile of the transmitters. In this paper, a new converter topology to drive closely spaced segmented Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer (DWPT) systems is proposed. The proposed converter can be expanded to cater for different number of transmitters, and it can provide a uniform transferred power profile throughout the path of transmitter coils, known as track. Furthermore, this study focuses on analyzing the operation of the converter and the effect of closely spaced transmitters over its operation. To show the effectiveness of the proposed topology and its modulation technique, the converter is simulated and experimentally tested using a laboratory prototype. The results are compared and analyzed, and their close agreement shows the validity of the proposed technique.

Meta-heuristic techniques have shown remarkable performance in a vast variety of engineering problems. Accurate solving of non-linear equation set in selective harmonic elimination (SHE) has been one of the widely discussed numerical problems in power electronics. Current study aims at conducting an inclusive comparison of prominent stochastic methods adopted for SHE and modified SHE (MSHE) PWM techniques. The problem is defined as finding local optima of cascaded H-bride (CHB) converter operation parameters. The survey investigates key indices of low-order harmonic components and weighted total harmonic distortion (WTHD). Floating fundamental component is introduced for SHE and MSHE to achieve higher rate of flexibility for optimization techniques. Finally, an advanced modulation technique is proposed to address the dc-link voltage ripples. Simulation and experimental results are presented as a proof of concept.

In a typical wireless power transfer (WPT) system, the load, the mutual inductance, and the required tuning frequency can vary in a particular range. Variation of each parameter can substantially impact the dynamic characteristics of the system. Thus, they can be considered as sources of uncertainty in the system. To address this, robust control methods such as μ-synthesis are developed to deal with possible system uncertainties. This article first undertakes the generic dynamic analysis of the series–series WPT compensation network for two modes of operation, i.e., constant output voltage (COV) mode and constant output current (COC) mode, in the presence of three aforementioned uncertainty sources. Subsequently, the frequency detuning as a function of the compensation capacitor variation is explored and broadened as a technique to obtain the optimized compensation capacitor value that can lead to a plant with minimized dynamic deviations from its nominal system in the operating range between COC and COV modes. As such, this approach offers a design procedure for a least conservative robust controller, which can significantly improve the system performance. The optimized structure and the corresponding designed μ-synthesis controller are comprehensively elaborated. The theoretical achievements and experimental results show superior dynamic performance of the optimized structure and the corresponding designed controller in the presence of three uncertainty sources compared to the COC and COV modes of operation.

Based on the nature of self-mixing signals, we propose the use of the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm in place of the fast Fourier transform (FFT) for processing signals obtained from self-mixing interferometry (SMI). We apply this algorithm to two representative SMI measurement techniques: range finding and velocimetry. Applying MUSIC to SMI range finding, we find its signal-to-noise ratio performance to be significantly better than that of the FFT, allowing for more robust, longer-range measurement systems. We further demonstrate that MUSIC enables a fundamental change in how SMI Doppler velocity measurement is approached, letting one discard the complex fitting procedure and allowing for a real-time frequency estimation process.

An attractive approach to increasing the output power and bandwidth of converters is through the parallel connection of multiple, subrated converter cells via mutually coupled inductors. Achieving a balanced contribution to the output current by all paralleled converter cells is critical; good reference tracking performance, however, should also be maintained. Since these two control tasks are coupled, tuning of the controller parameters is challenging. This article demonstrates a methodology for decoupling the output current reference tracking control task from the current balancing control. We show that once balancing and tracking controllers are decoupled, the controller parameter tuning can be conducted independently, simplifying design and analysis of controller performance. Experimental results are presented, which validate the proposed methodology, applied to a three-cell, parallel interleaved converter with cyclic cascade coupled inductor filter network, operating at 100 V RMS and 9 A RMS .

In this paper, the problem of the ripple torque experienced with permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) is discussed and solved by adopting advanced simulation tools. The two pulsating torque components are identified: the cogging (detent) torque and the slot harmonics caused ripple. Simulated results are verified by using finite element method (FEM), taking into account the nonlinearity of magnetic material and secondary effects. The results are than proved on the experimental setup. Simplified model for the torque disturbance is proposed, suitable for designing active and passive compensating measures
