The concept of sustainable development was introduced in Europe by the Treaty of Amsterdam (1997) and was extended to waste management in the Waste Framework Directive. In order to achieve sustainable development, hazardous waste (HW) must be managed safely and in accordance with regulations. This also applies to worldwide HW transport, especially when HW is shipped for disposal. The United Nations, through the Basel Convention, aims to prevent the export of HW from developed countries to developing countries for disposal. In Europe, HW shipments are regulated by Regulation (EC) No. 1013/2006 of the European Parliament and by the Council of 14 June 2006 on shipments of waste. Additionally, all HW shipments must be in accordance with two principles contained in the Waste Framework Directive: proximity and self-sufficiency. Using data from 2014 and network analysis methodology, this paper fills the gaps in the scientific literature by looking at how shipments of HW travel for disposal in Europe, how the regulations affect these shipments and how GDP per capita influences the shipment of waste. The results show that countries with a high GDP per capita play an important role in the network (having the highest in-degree) and that the absence of landfill taxes for HW does not influence HW shipments for disposal. Therefore, countries in the EU act in accordance with the proximity and self-sufficiency principles.

YouTube has become an educational and entertainment tool among Western European families, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study monitored the main channels for children aged 0–5 years by using the social media analysis (SNA) methodology from March 24, 2020 to August 24, 2020. The software used has been FanpageKarma, which allows the collection and interpretation of data. The results indicate not only a growth in the use of such channels during confinement, but also how their expansion is related to the evolution of the COVID-19, reflecting, in turn, the consequences of the government policies adopted. Social distancing generated a greater consumption of recreational content, but not a greater growth in educational content regardless of the country or culture.

In Europe, there are different regulations regarding hazardous waste management with which European Union Member States must comply. On the one hand, Member States must meet the recovery targets that are set in the different waste Directives, and they have two options here: material recovery facilities in the country of origin, or recovery through the shipment of waste. In addition, EU Member States must comply with the regulations governing the shipment of hazardous waste (HW), that is, the Basel Convention and the European Regulation on the shipment of waste. Two main questions arise: where is hazardous waste sent, and why? We analyse the European regulation on the shipment of waste, and we consider the above questions by combining network analysis methodology, to examine which countries in the network can be grouped in HW-trading communities, and ANOVA technique to study how the groups created in the network behave in different contexts. These HW-trading communities can be assessed according to European Innovation Indicators, GDP, and other variables. The results allow us to understand the drivers behind the shipment of HW for recovery in Europe. First, this study provides a descriptive overview of the relationships between European countries, the way in which they cooperate and describes how each country is positioned in the joint network. Second, the study is able to identify the most relevant countries in the network. Third, the HW-trading communities are analysed to discover whether they behave differently from the other groups according to GDP and other variables, amongst which we have included the following Europe Innovation Indicators: innovation index, research systems, innovation friendly environment, or innovators. The results show that the Nordic countries are outstanding in the way in which their waste is managed with other countries and reveal a community that works both in the context of hazardous waste shipment and innovation.

The crisis resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic has affected (among other organizations) universities, because their usual activities have been modified. Social networks, in particular Twitter, have experienced an increase in use. The aim of this research is to analyze the behavior of Spanish universities on Twitter during the period between 1 January and 30 April 2020. The corporate accounts of all Spanish universities were monitored, the most relevant key performance indicators (KPIs: commitment, followers, tweets, favorites, and retweets) were analyzed, and finally, a sentiment analysis of the tweets with the greatest impact was carried out. In addition, this study proposes the ECCD model (educational, cooperative, corporate and informative), which is capable of categorizing the type of information issued by universities in crisis situations. This article shows the relevance of Twitter as a communication channel in critical situations, as well as the increased commitment of the digital community to university accounts. It also demonstrates how the positive polarity of messages issued by privately owned universities increases in crisis situations. Finally, this article highlights different behavior between the pre-Covid-19 compared with the pandemic stage.

This research analyses the European landscape of innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). To achieve this objective, data collected from the Horizon 2020 strategy is extracted, which includes 1055 research projects that focus on innovation in SMEs. A complex network analysis is carried out at three levels: (1) at aggregated level by participating European countries, (2) at aggregated level according to the actors of the Triple Helix model, and (3) at disaggregated level according to the individual entities participating in the program. The results allow us to understand the European environment that drives innovation in SMEs. First, this study provides a descriptive overview of the relationships between European countries that favor innovation, and it also describes the positioning of each of them in the joint network. Second, this analysis is able to identify the most relevant agents in the network, the Big Science Centers, and their relationships with industry and public institutions. This study can be used as an analytical tool to improve knowledge transfer in complex ecosystems.

Cyberbullying has been established as a serious problem that affects all countries. However, the phenomenon of duality in cyberbullying, whereby an individual assumes two completely opposite roles, i.e., being a cybervictim and a cyberbully at the same time, has not been sufficiently examined in depth. The study population of this meta-analysis of 22 studies (K = 27) comprised 47,836 adolescents whose mean age was 13.68 years. The effect size of the correlation between being both a cybervictim and a cyberbully was moderate-high (r = 0.428), and its significance was high (p<0.001). The moderator variables sex, age and culture were studied by meta-regression; only culture was found to be significant, explaining 66% of the variance (R2 = 66%). It was found in the data that Central European, Mediterranean culture, North American, South America and Asian culture in particular accounted for most of the moderator effect, while the other two variables were insignificant. The systematic review showed that the group of cyberbully-victims was chiefly formed by females with unstable family links (laissez-faire parental style, lack of communication and rules, offensive communication with parents). Lack of clear, appropriate rules and behavioural patterns in this family type reinforces problematic Internet use, which in turn increases the risk of individuals in this group becoming cybervictims. Longitudinal studies have revealed a series of grave problems and a relation between reporting being a cybervictim in the first survey waves and becoming a cyberbully in later waves. The cybervictim-bully population also proved to be more prone to suffer other psychological disorders (depression and anxiety) and emotional difficulties with peers.

In this paper, data envelopment analysis (DEA) is applied to exhaustively examine the efficiency of the main airline companies in the European airspace by using novel input/output parameters: business management factors, network analysis metrics, as well as social media estimators. Furthermore, we also use network analysis to provide a better differentiation among efficiency values. Results indicate that user engagement, as well as the analysis of the position within the airspace-from an operative perspective, influence the efficiency of the airline companies, allowing a more comprehensive understanding of its functioning.

The study of efficiency in hazardous waste management has been proved to be a driving factor for sustainable development (SD). This study focuses on a performance assessment of European countries, most of them European Union (EU) member states and candidate countries that share a common legislative framework through European regulations, in order to provide a general understanding of hazardous waste performance. In this paper, we use Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to examine the efficiency of 32 countries in Europe by using novel input/output environmental parameters to study the efficiency of the different waste management operations from an environmental point of view. This analysis contrasts the efficiency in the management of total waste versus hazardous waste and studies three operations with hazardous wastes: incineration and incineration with energy recovery, disposal and recovery. Results show that there are differences in the achievement of efficiency, not only among countries, but also among the different waste management operations analysed.

In the last years, Science and Technology Parks (STPs) have been considered facilitators of inter-organizational relationships, as well as instruments of public policy, by creating networks and allowing access for the learning of local innovation. In this study, we propose a quantitative tool as support for measuring the efficiency of STPs through the analysis of the complex networks they form. We present a generic framework called the Inter-Relationship Science-Park Analysis (ISA) framework to study STPs at three different levels of management: (1) individual entities (research centres, universities, innovation companies, etc.); (2) STP global management; and (3) productive sector development. Moreover, we have applied the ISA framework to a real-world case study: the Walqa Science and Technology Park. Through it we have been able to know what relationships are established within this Science and Technology Park and which are the most important nodes in this network of interactions.

The main purpose of this research work is to conduct an in-depth analysis of the existing relations between organizations located in Science and Technology Parks (STPs). The aim is to analyze the extent to which the entities located at Walqa Technology Park (Spanish acronym PTW), situated in Huesca, interrelate, and which factors have an influence in these relations. To this end, a total of 56 organizations located at PTW were encouraged to participate, via personal interview or e-mail. Later on, the network of relations formed by the different agents of the park were analyzed, verifying the hypothesis that states that the relations between them depend on the characteristics of the entities; in this case, on the type of entity, size and activity sector. A study of different properties of the network and of the nodes were studied, such as the density of the network and of the agents per se, the degree of centrality of an entity, the centralization rate as well as the degree of intermediation. With a response rate of 96 %, the main results show that, as a result of the relations established, the companies set up at PTW obtain: opening up of new markets and business credibility. Based on an overall perspective, the appearance of marked centrality patterns that group together entities such as technology centres and universities in the centre of the network, can clearly be observed, the reason being that they combine the largest number of technology collaborations and staff collaboration. From the viewpoint of size, small companies appear in the central network with a very high number of collaborations. Finally, depending on the sector, it can be seen that the most interrelated are those that belong to the ICT sector followed by those from the engineering and energy sector.

The constant social, political, and economic changes require business organizations to continuously readjust. Sensitivity regarding gender equality has been determined by factors such as the entry of women into the work market, changes in business management proposals, which have started to appraise human capital as the companies’ main assets or the implementation of measures to reconcile working, family, and personal life. This effort not only guarantees compliance with the applicable regulations but also an increase in productivity and satisfaction both of the workforce of the organization and of its customers/suppliers. The aim of this study is to shed light on gender equality and the degree of satisfaction of employees of technology-based companies of Science and Technology Parks (STPs), members or partners of the APTE (Association of Science and Technology Parks of Spain), trying to identify good practices carried out in these entities, extracting success factors that show how to guarantee the specific procedures to achieve the aforementioned gender equality, and indicating those aspects that can be improved in order to reach effective equity. To this end, an empiric, quantitative analysis is performed using the survey technique, with the participation, via an online questionnaire, of mid- and top-level managers of all the companies set up in the 49 partner STPs of the APTE. An analysis of the results of this phase provides a clear vision of the success elements in favor of gender quality in STPs, which can also be generalisable to other companies.
