The prediction of air pollution is of great importance in highly populated areas because it directly impacts both the management of the city’s economic activity and the health of its inhabitants. This work evaluates and predicts the Spatio-temporal behavior of air quality in Metropolitan Lima, Peru, using artificial neural networks. The conventional feedforward backpropagation known as Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and the Recurrent Artificial Neural network known as Long Short-Term Memory networks (LSTM) were implemented for the hourly prediction of $$\hbox {PM}_{10}$$ PM 10 based on the past values of this pollutant and three meteorological variables obtained from five monitoring stations. The models were validated using two schemes: The Hold-Out and the Blocked-Nested Cross-Validation (BNCV). The simulation results show that periods of moderate $$\hbox {PM}_{10}$$ PM 10 concentration are predicted with high precision. Whereas, for periods of high contamination, the performance of both models, the MLP and LSTM, were diminished. On the other hand, the prediction performance improved slightly when the models were trained and validated with the BNCV scheme. The simulation results showed that the models obtained a good performance for the CDM, CRB, and SMP monitoring stations, characterized by a moderate to low level of contamination. However, the results show the difficulty of predicting this contaminant in those stations that present critical contamination episodes, such as ATE and HCH. In conclusion, the LSTM recurrent artificial neural networks with BNCV adapt more precisely to critical pollution episodes and have better predictability performance for this type of environmental data.

Crude oil price forecasting is an important research area in the international bulk commodity market. However, as risk factors diversify, price movements exhibit more complex nonlinear behavior. Hence, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of forecasting Brent crude oil prices by comparing various hybrid combinations of linear and nonlinear time series models. To this end, first, the logarithmic transformation is used to stabilize the variance of the crude oil prices time series; second, the original time series of log crude oil prices is decomposed into two new subseries, such as a long-run trend series and a stochastic series, using the Hodrick–Prescott filter; and third, two linear and two nonlinear time series models are considered to forecast the decomposed subseries. Finally, the forecast results for each subseries are combined to obtain the final day-ahead forecast result. The proposed modeling framework is applied to daily Brent spot prices from 1 January 2013 to 27 December 2022. Six different accuracy metrics, pictorial analysis, and a statistical test are performed to verify the proposed methodology’s performance. The experimental results (accuracy measures, pictorial analysis, and statistical test) show the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed hybrid forecasting methodology. Additionally, our forecasting results are comparatively better than the benchmark models. Finally, we believe that the proposed forecasting method can be used for other complex financial time data to obtain highly efficient and accurate forecasts.

Forecasting the industry’s electricity consumption is essential for energy planning in a given country or region. Thus, this study aims to apply time-series forecasting models (statistical approach and artificial neural network approach) to the industrial electricity consumption in the Brazilian system. For the statistical approach, the Holt–Winters, SARIMA, Dynamic Linear Model, and TBATS (Trigonometric Box–Cox transform, ARMA errors, Trend, and Seasonal components) models were considered. For the approach of artificial neural networks, the NNAR (neural network autoregression) and MLP (multilayer perceptron) models were considered. The results indicate that the MLP model was the one that obtained the best forecasting performance for the electricity consumption of the Brazilian industry under analysis.

Accurate and efficient demand forecasting is essential to grid stability, supply, and management in today’s electricity markets. Due to the complex pattern of electric power demand time series, it is challenging to model them directly. Therefore, this research proposes a novel time series ensemble approach to forecast electric power demand in the Peruvian electricity market one month ahead. This approach treats the first preprocessed electricity demand time series for missing values, variance stabilization, normalization, stationarity, and seasonality issues. Secondly, six single time series and three of their proposed ensemble models forecast the clean demand time series. The results indicate that the proposed time ensemble approach is an efficient and precise one-month-ahead forecast for electricity demand in the Peruvian electricity market. Additionally, the final best ensemble forecasting model within the proposed ensemble time series forecasting approach obtained the smallest average accuracy errors, performing statistically significantly better than those mentioned in the best-proposed models in the literature. Lastly, while numerous global studies have been conducted from various perspectives, no analysis has been undertaken using an ensemble learning approach to forecast electric power demand in the Peruvian electricity market.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions continue to rise globally despite efforts to combat climate change. Energy industry emissions are a pressing global issue, causing devastating impacts. Hence, it is vital to accurately and efficiently forecast CO2 emissions. Thus, this study comprehensively analyzes forecasting CO2 emissions by comparing various hybrid combinations of regression and time series methods to explore the CO2 emissions in Pakistan. First, divide the yearly time series of CO2 emissions into the long-run curve trend series and the residual subseries. The long-run curve trend subseries is modeled using parametric and nonparametric regression methods, while various standard time series models are used to forecast the residual subseries. However, the forecasts of each subseries will be combined to obtain the final forecast of CO2 emissions. This work used four different accuracy mean errors, a statistical test, and a graphical analysis as performance measures to evaluate the proposed hybrid forecasting technique. The findings confirmed that the proposed hybrid combination forecasting technique is highly accurate and efficient in forecasting CO2 emissions. Likewise, according to the proposed final optimal hybrid combination forecasting model, Pakistan's per capita CO2 emissions will be 1.130215 metric tons in 2030. Pakistan's escalating emission trend signals that creative solutions must be implemented to curb it. Thus, the government must price carbon footprints, regulate electricity from zero-carbon sources, reduce population, encourage afforestation in densely populated areas, adopt clean technology, and fund research.

In today’s modern world, monthly forecasts of electricity consumption are vital in planning the generation and distribution of energy utilities. However, the properties of these time series are so complex that they are difficult to model directly. Thus, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of forecasting monthly electricity consumption by comparing several decomposition techniques followed by various time series models. To this end, first, we decompose the electricity consumption time series into three new subseries: the long-term trend series, the seasonal series, and the stochastic series, using the three different proposed decomposition methods. Second, to forecast each subseries with various popular time series models, all their possible combinations are considered. Finally, the forecast results of each subseries are summed up to obtain the final forecast results. The proposed modeling and forecasting framework is applied to data on Pakistan’s monthly electricity consumption from January 1990 to June 2020. The one-month-ahead out-of-sample forecast results (descriptive, statistical test, and graphical analysis) for the considered data suggest that the proposed methodology gives a highly accurate and efficient gain. It is also shown that the proposed decomposition methods outperform the benchmark ones and increase the performance of final model forecasts. In addition, the final forecasting models produce the lowest mean error, performing significantly better than those reported in the literature. Finally, we believe that the framework proposed for modeling and forecasting can also be used to solve other forecasting problems in the real world that have similar features.
