In the framework of activities embedding magnet design and associated R&D activities and relying on Cable in Conduit Conductors (CICC) technology, the singularity of the concept can rise some challenges versus their modelling in operation. Indeed, CICC includes thousands of superconducting strands, twisted together under a multi-staged scheme that also includes deformation by cabling and compaction during manufacture. This causes the accurate predictability of strands position in CICC extremely difficult, while it can be a key element for modelling their performances in operation. As a matter of fact the coupling losses rely on the CICC capability to establish inter-strand shielding currents, driven by the inter-strand contacts mapping which are only accessible in prediction via accurate 3D strand trajectories geometry. Same applies for prediction of CICC mechanical properties (deformation of Nb3Sn strands) and hydraulic properties (helium coolant force-flowed between the strands), making those investigations of high added-value. In this context, INFLPR installed a new set-up dedicated to micro-tomography to examine CICCs with high resolution, and get an overall overall 3D overview regarding picture of the strands location. CEA and INFLPR further developed a post-processing method to reconstruct the strands trajectories with high accuracy. The measurement and data analysis workflow was applied to two CEA middle-size CICCs with variable void fraction from which contact statistics were issued. The obtained database was exploited to reconstruct equivalent 3D resistive network. Above applications using CICC topology database are discussed and compared to experimental AC losses database issued by CEA. The outcomes are discussed and subsequent guidelines for future work presented

A Low Field W&R (Wind and React) conductor, developed in the frame of the conceptual design studies for the Toroidal Field (TF) coils of DEMO, has been designed to be constituted of a small number of superconducting Nb 3 Sn strands and a high number of stabilization copper wires. It has been extensively characterized at the SULTAN facility at Swiss Plasma Center (SPC) in February 2021. The conductor has been operated up to its target current, 70.8 kA, and characterized up to a background magnetic field of 10.78 T. The test program included AC loss measurements, current sharing temperature ( Tcs ) and critical current ( Ic ) measurements before and after cyclic loading. Critical temperature ( Tc ) measurements were performed on the virgin conductor at the beginning and at the end of the test campaign. In this work we are focusing on the DC characterization, while the AC measurements analysis will be the object of a following work. Concerning DC tests, premature quench phenomena prevented from operating the conductor at the target current – field conditions. Nevertheless, at lower currents Tcs stability was observed, with no performance degradation due to cycling. The present paper investigates these results and tries to give an explanation through measurements and tomographic analysis. Furthermore, the achieved strain distribution in the conductor, obtained by means of inductive measurements analysis, will be shown. The implications of the design approach on the performance, based on the outcome of such tests, are discussed.
