Natural gas hydrates represent a promising clean energy source with vast reserves. Their efficient development is crucial for ensuring the sustainable advancement of human society. However, wellhead instability occurred in the long-term development, which poses a significant challenge that impacts its commercial development. In the present work, the properties of hydrate-bearing sediments were experimentally investigated. It was found that the elastic modulus, cohesion, and internal friction angle of hydrate-bearing sediments exhibit an increase with the effective stress. As an example, when the effective stress increases from 0 MPa to 25 MPa, the normalized elastic modulus exhibits a rise from 1.00 to 1.36. Conversely, the Poisson’s ratio, permeability, and porosity demonstrate a decline in accordance with this trend. As an example, both normalized porosity and permeability decrease to values below 0.40 as the effective stress increases to 25 MPa. Based on the experimental results and previous work, a comprehensive model for describing the effect of both hydrate saturation and effective stress on physical parameters was obtained. Subsequently, a multi-field coupled investigation methodology was developed to evaluate wellhead stability during the long-term development of hydrate-bearing sediments, and the evolution characteristics and mechanisms of wellhead instability were numerically explored. It reveals that development operation using the vertical wellbore decomposes hydrates in the surrounding sediments only within a radius of 19.52 m, which significantly undermines the wellhead stability. Moreover, the wellhead system not only sinks with sediment subsidence but also experiences additional sinking due to the failure of bonding between the wellhead system and sediments. Furthermore, the latter accounts for a significant portion, amounting to approximately 68.15% of the total sinking under the research conditions. This study can provide methodological prerequisites for exploring the impact of various factors on wellhead stability during the long-term hydrate development process.

The optimum design of gas drainage boreholes is crucial for energy security and sustainability in coal mining. Therefore, the construction of fluid–solid coupling models and numerical simulation analyses are key problems for gas drainage boreholes. This work is based on the basic theory of fluid–solid coupling, the correlation definition between coal porosity and permeability, and previous studies on the influence of adsorption expansion, change in pore free gas pressure, and the Klinkenberg effect on gas flow in coal. A mathematical model of the dynamic evolution of coal permeability and porosity is derived. A fluid–solid coupling model of gas-bearing coal and the related partial differential equation for gas migration in coal are established. Combined with an example of the measurement of the drilling radius of the bedding layer in a coal mine, a coupled numerical solution under negative pressure extraction conditions is derived by using COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software. Numerical simulation results show that the solution can effectively guide gas extraction and discharge during mining. This study provides theoretical and methodological guidance for energy security and coal mining sustainability.

The regionalized pressure relief, permeability enhancement, and outburst prevention of "three high and one low" coal seams with high gas, high ground stress, high outburst risk, and low permeability have become important problems to be solved urgently in realizing the sustainable development of coal mines. In this study, a combination of theoretical research, RFPA2D-Flow numerical simulation, and field test was used to study the initiation mechanism and propagation law of directional hydraulic fracturing fractures through the seam. The results show that fracture initiation depends on the axial and radial horizontal stress of the fracture hole, the physical and mechanical properties of coal and rock, and the inside of the weakest layer. Single-hole hydraulic fracturing can achieve a pressure relief radius of 7-8 m, but there is a stress concentration zone outside, which is not conducive to regional pressure relief and permeability enhancement. Directional hydraulic fracturing with multiple holes produces an approximate cylindrical compression and crushing ring and a penetrating fracture surface along the center line of the pressure crack hole and the directional hole, which better eliminates the phenomenon of stress concentration in nondirectional hydraulic fracturing. The technology was applied to the 2238 auxiliary roadway of Chengzhuang Mine of Jinmei Group, and the field implementation results showed that field implementation results showed that directional hydraulic fracturing through the seam reduced the gas content in the coal seam to a great extent, and the coal seam gas content was reduced by about 42.3%, indicating that the technology can effectively reduce the risk of coal and gas outbursts.

Coal and gas outburst accidents seriously threaten mine production safety. To further improve the scientific accuracy of coal and gas outburst risk prediction, a system software (V1.2.0) was developed based on the C/S architecture, Visual Basic development language, and SQL Server 2000 database. The statistical process control (SPC) method and logistic regression analyses were used to assess and develop the critical value of outburst risk for a single index, such as the S value of drill cuttings and the K1 value of the desorption index. A multivariate information coupling analysis was performed to explore the interrelation of the outburst warning, and the prediction equation of the outburst risk was obtained on this basis. Finally, the SPC and logistic regression analysis methods were used for typical mines. The results showed that the SPC method accurately determined the sensitivity value of a single index for each borehole depth, and the accuracy of the logistic regression method was 94.7%. These methods are therefore useful for the timely detection of outburst hazards during the mining process.

The evaluation of the fracturing effect of coalbed methane (CBM) wells is crucial for the efficient development of CBM reservoirs. Currently, studies focusing on the evaluation of the hydraulic fracture stimulation effect of coal seams and the integrated analysis of “drilling-fracturing-monitoring” are relatively insufficient. Therefore, this paper takes three drainage and production wells in the coalbed methane block on the northwest wing of the Xiangxia anticline in the Bijie Experimental Zone of Guizhou Province as the research objects. In view of the complex geological characteristics of this area, such as multiple and thin coal seams, high gas content, and high stress and low permeability, the paper systematically summarizes the results of drilling and fracturing engineering practices of the three drainage and production wells in the area, including the application of key technologies such as a two-stage wellbore structure and the “bentonite slurry + low-solid-phase polymer drilling fluid” system to ensure wellbore stability, low-solid-phase polymer drilling fluid for wellbore protection, and staged temporary plugging fracturing. On this basis, a study on microseismic signal acquisition and tomographic energy inversion based on a ground dense array was carried out, achieving four-dimensional dynamic imaging and quantitative interpretation of the fracturing fractures. The results show that the fracturing fractures of the three drainage and production wells all extend along the direction of the maximum horizontal principal stress, with azimuths concentrated between 88° and 91°, which is highly consistent with the results of the in situ stress calculation from the previous drilling engineering. The overall heterogeneity of the reservoir leads to the asymmetric distribution of fractures, with the transformation intensity on the east side generally higher than that on the west side, and the maximum stress deformation influence radius reaching 150 m. The overall transformation effect of each well is good, with the effective transformation volume ratio of fracturing all exceeding 75%, and most of the target coal seams are covered by the fracture network, significantly improving the fracture connectivity. From the perspective of the transformed planar area per unit fluid volume, although there are numerical differences among the three wells, they are all within the effective transformation range. This study shows that microseismic fracture monitoring technology can provide a key basis for the optimization of fracturing technology and the evaluation of the production increase effect, and offers a solution to the problem of evaluating the hydraulic fracture stimulation effect of coal seams.

To solve the problem of the field application of downhole hydraulic fracturing technology due to the difficulty in sealing holes, this study analyzes the influence of special cement, expansion agents, stabilizers, and fiber material on basic properties, such as the setting time, fluidity, and compressive strength of high-pressure sealing materials through systematic tests based on a summary of conventional sealing materials. It was determined that with 20–30% special cement and 4% expansion agent added, and a fiber material length of 8 mm and volume of 1%, the high-pressure sealing material had high fluidity and a large expansion rate, demonstrating early strength. The bond performance of the high-pressure sealing material was tested through the variable-angle shear test. The relationship between the fractal dimension of the coal-rock mass around the borehole and the bond performance of the high-pressure sealing material was also explored.
