In this work, we consider a joint optimisation of real-time deployment and resource allocation scheme for UAV-aided relay systems in emergency scenarios such as disaster relief and public safety missions. In particular, to recover the network within a disaster area, we propose a fast K-means-based user clustering model and jointly optimal power and time transferring allocation which can be applied in the real system by using UAVs as flying base stations for real-time recovering and maintaining network connectivity during and after disasters. Under the stringent QoS constraints, we then provide centralised and distributed models to maximise the energy efficiency of the considered network. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed computational approaches in terms of network energy efficiency and execution time for solving the resource allocation problem in real-time scenarios. We demonstrate that our proposed algorithm outperforms other benchmark schemes.

It is envisioned that 6G, unlike its predecessor 5G, will depart from connected machines and connected people to connected intelligence. The main goal of 6G networks is to support massive connectivity for time-sensitive and computation-sensitive services in mission-critical applications. The creation of real-time optimization (RTO) enabled by the fast growing data analytic and machine learning will seize the opportunities for 6G wireless networks to support such immersive services such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and tactile Internet. Recently, with the rapid development of quantum computers, quantum-inspired optimization and machine learning algorithms have been exploited as efficient solutions for future wireless networks. In this article, we provide a comprehensive view on the new concept of quantum-inspired RTO and its application to the optimal resource allocation for 6G wireless networks. Our main contributions are to introduce some of the initial research results and introduce the potentiality of quantum-inspired RTO on some 6G emerging technologies. Not only do we review the fundamental principles; we also explore the challenges and opportunities of this exciting research direction.

In this paper, we propose reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) networks that can utilise both advantages of UAV’s agility and RIS’s reflection for enhancing the network’s performance. To aim at maximising the energy efficiency (EE) of the considered networks, we jointly optimise the power allocation of the UAVs and the phase-shift matrix of the RIS. A deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach is proposed for solving the continuous optimisation problem with time-varying channels in a centralised fashion. Moreover, parallel learning approach is also proposed for reducing the latency of information transmission requirement of the centralised approach. Numerical results show a significant improvement of our proposed schemes compared with the conventional approaches in terms of EE, flexibility, and processing time. Our proposed DRL methods for RIS-assisted UAV networks can be used for real-time applications due to their capability of instant decision-making and handling the time-varying channel with the dynamic environmental setting.

This paper proposes an optimization framework for power and time resource allocation during time sharing non-orthogonal multiple access (TS-NOMA) transmissions performed by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the context of a large-scale scenario. The objective of the proposed UAV-TS-NOMA system and optimization framework is to jointly maximize the energy efficiency (EE) and the downlink throughput fairness among users within the UAV communication range. The idea behind is to propose a communication system that: i) merges the advantages of UAV communications with the ones offered by the TS-NOMA paradigm and ii) maximizes the EE and the downlink fairness among users. The resulting model finds applicability in performing energy efficient and throughput fair transmissions into power-constrained communication scenarios. Performance investigations regarding the proposed framework in finding the optimal set of resources which maximizes jointly the above mentioned network metrics, have shown the advantage of the proposed two-step optimization framework in finding the optimal configuration of both power and time resources, respecting both the power constraints at the transmitter and the quality-of-service requirement of the users. In addition, it is shown how under particular conditions the proposed framework jointly optimizes the aforementioned network metrics in only one step.

In this article, we consider a new unmanned ariel vehicles (UAV)-aided intelligent wireless sensing scheme, where the UAVs are deployed for smart sensing and collecting data from Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. In particular, we propose optimal UAVs’ path planing approaches for minimizing the completion time and total energy consumption of the UAVs’ deployment for data collection. Two optimal schemes, namely, optimal energy consumption by peer-to-peer UAV-IoT sensing networks and optimal energy consumption by clustering UAV-IoT sensing networks, are considered. The low-complexity procedures of our advanced optimization techniques are suitably applied to disaster relief networks when the solving time must be strictly adhered to. Our real-time optimization algorithms result in low computational complexity with fast deployment and low processing time for solving the problem of tracking and gathering sensor data, i.e., in very short time (milliseconds). Through simulations results we demonstrate that our proposed approaches in UAV-aided intelligent IoT wireless sensing are suitable for time-critical mission applications such as emergency communications, public safety, and disaster relief networks.

The recent outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has rapidly become a pandemic, which calls for prompt action in identifying suspected cases at an early stage through risk prediction. To suppress its further spread, we exploit the social relationships between mobile devices in the Social Internet of Things (SIoT) to help control its propagation by allocating the limited protective resources to the influential so-called high-degree individuals to stem the tide of precipitated spreading. By exploiting the so-called differential contact intensity and the infectious rate in susceptible-exposed-infected-removed (SEIR) epidemic model, the resultant optimization problem can be transformed into the minimum weight vertex cover (MWVC) problem of graph theory. To solve this problem in a high-dynamic random network topology, we propose an adaptive scheme by relying on the graph embedding technique during the state representation and reinforcement learning in the training phase. By relying on a pair of real-life datasets, the results demonstrate that our scheme can beneficially reduce the epidemiological reproduction rate of the infection. This technique has the potential of assisting in the early identification of COVID-19 cases.
