Ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLCs) and the adoption of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for network coverage improvement have emerged as key enabling communication paradigms for the successful deployment of mobile communication services envisioned in both the fifth-generation (5G) and the sixth-generation (6G) networks. This paper provides a comprehensive survey about the current state-of-the-art (SoA) on UAV-enabled URLLC networks. The core idea is to highlight the main characteristics of this new network concept as well as its critical aspects. We first perform an overview of URLLC by illustrating the main features and related implementation challenges. Subsequently, an in-depth discussion on UAV-enabled networks is provided, with a special emphasis on how URLLCs and UAV communication can be classified as complementary paradigms. Finally, a comprehensive analysis and classification of the current research advancements on UAV-enabled URLLCs networks is carried out. This paper is concluded by pointing out some the open challenges and our visions related to future directions which should be undertaken in order to pave the way towards the practical implementation of this promising network architecture.

In this paper, we propose an aerial reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) system to support the stringent constraints of ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC). Specifically, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) employed onboard RIS panels can act as repeaters to reflect the signal from macro base station (MBS) to all users in the networks. To overcome the dense networks’ interference, we propose to use zero-forcing beamforming and time division multiplexing access (TDMA) scheme where each UAV can serve a number of users in its own cluster. We formulate a optimisation framework in terms of UAVs’ deployment, power allocation at MBS, phase-shift of RIS, and blocklength of URLLC. Due to highly nonconvex and complex optimisation problem, we first consider to use a deep neural network (DNN) to solve the optimal UAVs’ deployment. Then, the optimal resource allocation is proposed to provide the maximal reliability of the considered system with respect to the users’ fairness. From the representative numerical results, our proposed scheme is shown to superior to other benchmarks which exhibits the positive impact of aerial RIS in supporting stringent demands of URLLC.

This paper proposes an optimization framework for power and time resource allocation during time sharing non-orthogonal multiple access (TS-NOMA) transmissions performed by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the context of a large-scale scenario. The objective of the proposed UAV-TS-NOMA system and optimization framework is to jointly maximize the energy efficiency (EE) and the downlink throughput fairness among users within the UAV communication range. The idea behind is to propose a communication system that: i) merges the advantages of UAV communications with the ones offered by the TS-NOMA paradigm and ii) maximizes the EE and the downlink fairness among users. The resulting model finds applicability in performing energy efficient and throughput fair transmissions into power-constrained communication scenarios. Performance investigations regarding the proposed framework in finding the optimal set of resources which maximizes jointly the above mentioned network metrics, have shown the advantage of the proposed two-step optimization framework in finding the optimal configuration of both power and time resources, respecting both the power constraints at the transmitter and the quality-of-service requirement of the users. In addition, it is shown how under particular conditions the proposed framework jointly optimizes the aforementioned network metrics in only one step.

Nha Trang Coast is located in the South Central Vietnam and the coastal erosion has occurred rapidly in recent years. Hence it is crucial to accurately monitor the shoreline changes for better coastal management and reduction of risks for communities. In this paper, we explored a statistical forecasting model, Seasonal Auto-regressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA), and two Machine Learning (ML) models, Neural Network Auto-Regression (NNAR) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), to predict the shoreline variations from surveillance camera images. Compared to the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF), the most common method used for predicting shoreline changes from cameras, we demonstrate that the SARIMA, NNAR and LSTM models outperform the EOF model significantly in terms of prediction accuracy. The forecasting performance of the SARIMA model, NNAR model and LSTM model is comparable in both long and short-term predictions. The results suggest that these models are highly effective in detecting shoreline changes from video cameras under extreme weather conditions.

The expected explosion of video traffic in 5G ultradense networks will pose many challenges to the Internet service providers, e.g., degraded capacity and unfair quality of service (QoS). The most efficient solution is resource allocation that does not require any network architecture changes. This article proposes a social-aware spectrum sharing and caching helper selection (SSC) strategy that exploits the resources of the mobile users (MUs), i.e., downlink spectrum resources for sharing and caching storage resources for multicasting, to offload the videos in dense device-to-device (D2D) 5G networks. Particularly, we consider physical and social attributes of the MUs to formulate an SSC optimization problem. The SSC problem is solved to optimally control: which MUs, namely sharing mobile users (SUs), that share the downlink spectrum resources and which MUs, namely caching mobile helpers, that cache the requested videos for D2D multicast communications by reusing the shared downlink spectrum resources. The objective is to maximize the system capacity while satisfying the constraints on capacity fluctuation among the receiving mobile users (RUs) and target signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio at the SUs, to guarantee the RUs and the SUs high QoS fairness. Simulation results are shown to demonstrate the benefits of the SSC strategy.

This paper studies an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-empowered wireless powered communication network (WPCN) in Internet of Things (IoT) networks. In particular, a power station (PS) with multiple antennas uses energy beamforming to enable wireless charging to multiple IoT devices, in the downlink wireless energy transfer (WET) phase; then, during the uplink wireless information transfer (WIT) phase, these IoT devices utilise the harvested energy to concurrently transmit their individual information signal to a multi-antenna access point (AP), which equips with multi-user decomposition (MUD) techniques to reconstruct the IoT devices’ signal. An IRS is deployed to improve the energy collection and information transmission capabilities in the WET and WIT phases, respectively. To examine the performance of the system under study, We maximize the sum throughput with the aim of jointly designing the optimal solutions for the active PS energy beamforming, AP receive beamforming, passive IRS beamforming, and time scheduling. Due to the multiple coupled variables, the resulting formulation is non-convex, and a two-level scheme to solve the problem is proposed. At the outer level, a one-dimensional (1-D) search method is applied to find the optimal time scheduling, while at the inner level, an iterative block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm is proposed to design the optimal receive beamforming, energy beamforming, and IRS phase shifts. In particular, the receive beamforming part is designed by considering the equivalence between sum rate maximisation and sum mean square error (MSE) minimisation, thereby deriving a closed-form solution. Furthermore, we alternately optimize the energy beamforming and IRS phase shifts using Lagrange dual transformation (LDT), quadratic transformation (QT), and alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) methods. Finally, numerical results are presented to showcase the performance of the proposed solution and highlight its advantages compared to some typical benchmark schemes.
