Fluorescent dyes absorbing and emitting in the visible and near-IR regions are promising for the development of fluorescent probes for labeling and bio-visualization of body cells. The ability to absorb and emit in the long-wavelength region increases the efficiency of recording the spectral signals of the probes due to the higher permeability of the skin layers. Compared to other fluorescent dyes, BODIPYs are attractive due to their excellent photophysical properties–narrow absorption and emission, intense fluorescence, simple signal modulation for the practical applications. As part of conjugates with biomolecules, BODIPY could act as a biomarker, but as therapeutic agent, which allows solving several problems at once-labeling or bioimaging and treatment based on the suppression of pathogenic microflora and cancer cells, which provides a huge potential for practical application of BODIPY conjugates in medicine. The review is devoted to the discussion of the recent, promising directions of BODIPY application in the field of conjugation with biomolecules. The first direction is associated with the development of BODIPY conjugates with drugs, including compounds of platinum, paclitaxel, chlorambucil, isoxazole, capsaicin, etc. The second direction is devoted to the labeling of vitamins, hormones, lipids, and other biomolecules to control the processes of their transport, localization in target cells, and metabolism. Within the framework of the third direction, the problem of obtaining functional optically active materials by conjugating BODIPY with other colored and fluorescent particles, in particular, phthalocyanines, is being solved.

In this study, a Fenton-activated persulfate (Fe2+/PS) system was introduced for the efficient degradation of Mordant Blue 9 (MB 9) as a textile dye in an aqueous solution. Results showed that the degradation of MB 9 was markedly influenced by operational parameters, such as initial pH, PS concentration, Fe2+ concentration, and initial dye concentration. Optimal reaction conditions were then determined. Inorganic anions, such as Cl− and HCO3−, enhanced the degradation efficiency of MB 9 under optimal conditions. Addition of HCO3− reduced the degradation performance of MB 9, whereas the addition of Cl− increased the degradation percentage of MB 9. In addition, quenching experiments were conducted using methanol and tert-butyl alcohol as scavengers, and methanol was identified as an effective scavenger. Thus, the degradation of MB 9 was attributed to S O 4 • − and •OH radicals. The degradation and mineralization efficiency of MB 9 was significantly reduced using the conventional Fenton process i.e., Fe2+/ hydrogen peroxide (HP) because of the formation of a Fe complex during degradation. Meanwhile, the Fe2+/persulfate (PS) system improved the degradation and mineralization performance.

This research work is devoted to collecting a high-quality dataset of BODIPYs in a series of 10–30 solvents. In total, 115 individual compounds in 71 solvents are represented by 1698 arrays of the spectral and photophysical properties of the fluorophore. Each dye for a series of solvents is characterized by a calculated value of solvatochromic sensitivity according to a semiempirical approach applied to a series of solvents. The whole dataset is classified into 6 and 24 clusters of solvatochromic sensitivity, from high negative to high positive solvatochromism. The results of the analysis are visualized by the polarity mapping plots depicting, in terms of wavenumbers, the absorption versus emission, stokes shift versus − (absorption maxima + emission maxima), and quantum yield versus stokes shift. An analysis of the clusters combining several dyes in an individual series of solvents shows that dyes of a high solvatochromic sensitivity demonstrate regular behaviour of the corresponding plots suitable for polarity and viscosity mapping. The fluorophores collected in this study represent a high quality dataset of pattern dyes for analytical and bioanalytical applications. The developed tools could be applied for the analysis of the applicability domain of the fluorescent sensors.

A comprehensive study of the molecular structure of aza-BODIPY and its derivatives, obtained by introduction of one or more substituents, was carried out. We considered the changes in the characteristics of the electronic and geometric structure of the unsubstituted aza-BODIPY introducing the following substituents into the dipyrrin core; phenyl, 2-thiophenyl, 2-furanyl, 3-pyridinyl, 4-pyridinyl, 2-pyridinyl, and ethyl groups. The ground-state geometries of the unsubstituted Aza-BODIPY and 27 derivatives were computed at the PBE/6-31G(d) and CAM-B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) levels of theory. The time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) together with FC vibronic couplings was used to investigate their absorption and emission spectra.

The obtainment of new luminophores for molecular sensorics of biosystems is becoming one of the urgent tasks in the field of chemical synthesis. The solution to each practical problem imposes its own limitations in the design of new structures with practically useful properties. The relationship between the structure and spectral properties is still to be unveiled. Three aza-BODIPY complexes with substituents of different natures were studied using time-resolved and steady-state fluorescence and absorption spectroscopy. The solvatochromic properties of aza-BODIPYs were studied with the use of a combined polyparametric approach and analysis by chemoinformatics methods for the first time. It was found that red shift of aza-BODIPY dyes was due to the increase of their structural lability. Predictive and experimental methods showed that the investigated aza-BODIPYs exhibited a positive solvatochromic effect, in contrast to classic BODIPYs (bearing C in the meso-position of the dipyrromethene core), which represents the negative solvatochromic properties. Spectral maxima in the area of the therapeutic window, low and predictable solvatochromism, and the ability to fine-tune the spectral characteristics make the investigated aza-BODIPYs promising scaffolds for the construction of bioengineering devices. Generalizations on the aza-BODIPYs’ design patterns were made in accordance with further bioimaging applications.
