This article describes the design, optimization, and performance evaluation of a novel multimode motion robot named SHOALBOT, which with multimode operations depends on only one type of propulsion device and can work flexibly in the amphibious environment including running on beaches, grasslands, seabed, and swimming in the water. Robots that work in water need to minimize the number of drive components to improve reliability and reduce communication pressure, our unique design enables the robot to rely on a kind of propulsion device named propeller-leg to have the ability to run rapidly in the seaside and seabed, and swim with multi-degrees-of-freedom in the water (such a propulsion system contains only four driving elements), and it can make the robot complete more work content and improve its adaptability to the environment. Running is more stable than swimming and will not disturb the animals in the water, but when the robot encounters a high obstacle with a large area coverage, switching the motion mode to the swimming mode can pass directly over obstacles instead of detouring or giving up work, this can improve work efficiency. We analyzed and optimized propeller-leg by simulation combined with the open water test, the propeller-leg's thrust in the water before and after optimization differs by 400% according to the test results. We optimized the minimum difference between the forward and reverse thrust of the propeller-leg to improve the stability of the robot movement process and optimized the difference from 25% to 3%. This article provides sufficient technical details and completeness, and through a series of performance evaluation experiments validated that the SHOALBOT has excellent movement ability in the amphibious environment compared with other published amphibious robots of the same size.
In this study, an annular jet pump optimization method is proposed based on an RBF (Radial Basis Function) neural network model and NSGA-II (Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm) optimization algorithm to improve the hydraulic performance of the annular jet pump applied in submarine trenching and dredging. Suction angle, diffusion angle, area ratio and flow ratio were selected as design variables. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was used for numerical simulation to obtain the corresponding performance, and an accurate RBF neural network approximate model was established. Finally, the NSGA-II algorithm was selected to carry out multi-objective optimization and obtain the optimal design variable combination. The results show that the determination coefficient R2 of the two objective functions (jet pump efficiency and head ratio) of the approximate model of the RBF neural network were greater than 0.97. Compared with the original model, the optimized model’s suction angle increased, and the diffusion angle, flow ratio and area ratio decreased. In terms of performance, the head ratio increased by 30.46% after the optimization of the jet pump, and efficiency increased slightly. The proposed jet pump performance optimization method provides a reference for improving the performance of other pumps.
Underwater robots can collect comprehensive information on species and habitats when conducting seabed operations, enhancing localized insights and expanding underwater ecological understanding. One approach uses autonomous underwater vehicles, but proximity operations may disturb sediments and compromise observation quality. Another approach uses wheeled or legged benthic robots, but unavoidable contact limits their application in delicate ecosystems like coral reefs. To address these challenges, we propose a maneuverable underwater vehicle for near-seabed observations. This vehicle moves with minimal turbulence and shows strong resistance to external disturbances, enabling high-quality seabed observation as close as 20 cm. It rapidly detects intense disturbances like turbulence and wall effects, allowing real-time path planning to prevent bottoming. Multiple tests in various marine environments, including sandy areas, coral reefs, and sheer rock, show low sediment disturbance and improved adaptability to rugged underwater terrain.
CFD simulation and analysis of the internal flow field of the annular multi-nozzle jet pump are carried out to study the effects of nozzle section geometries on performance of the pump based on the finite volume method and realizable k-ε model. The results show that the square nozzle peak efficiency is 3% higher than that of the circular nozzle and 4.1% higher than that of the triangular nozzle. According to the simulation results, the mixing mechanism of the working fluid and second fluid is analyzed on the basis of the vortex dynamics. The results show the following: the recirculation area and the friction loss of the non-circular nozzle are reduced, and the mixing effect is improved; the streamwise vortex plays a major role in the mixing process and decays to an extremely small value at the end of the throat after attenuating rapidly in the suction chamber; compared with the streamwise vortex, the strength of the spanwise vortex is relatively stronger; the spanwise vortex still fluctuates after developing to a certain extent in the throat; the maximum streamwise vorticity peak value of the square nozzle is 31% more than that of the circular nozzle and 39% more than that of the triangular nozzle; the maximum spanwise vorticity peak value of the square nozzle is 19% less than that of the circular nozzle and 12% less than that of the triangular nozzle.
The contact mechanics model of the metal lens-type sealing gasket is established on the basis of Hertz theory on the macroscopical scale in this paper. The relationship among sealing width, contact pressure, and preload is solved. Based on the structural characteristics of the subsea collet connector, the self-locking characteristics are analyzed to determine the gain coefficient of the sealing structure for the loading thrust. On the microscopic scale, the contact characteristics of the turning lens-type sealing gasket and the hub structure are analyzed by the equivalent replacement of the peak cut coefficient of the one-dimensional sinusoidal wave. The influence of different leakage forms on sealing performance is discussed from both radial and circumferential leakage, and the leakage rate of the lens-type sealing structure is calculated. The hydrostatic pressure experiment of the subsea collet connector with lens-type sealing gasket is carried out, and the correctness of the theoretical analysis is verified from the results of the pressure maintaining, sealing width measurement, and preload conversion.
Bionic amphibious robots are the intersection of biology and robotics; they have the advantages of environmental adaptability and maneuverability. An amphibious robot that combines walking and swimming move modes inspired by a crab (Portunus) is presented in this article. The outstanding characteristic of the robot is that its environmental adaptability relies on the bionic multi-modal movement, which is based on two modular bionic swimming legs and six modular walking legs. We designed the biomimetic crab robot based on the biological observation results. The design, analysis, and simulation of its structure and motion parameters are introduced in this paper. The swimming propulsion capability and the walking performance are verified through indoor, pool, and seaside experiments. In conclusion, the designed bionic crab robot provides a platform with practical application capabilities in amphibious environment detection, concealed reconnaissance, and aquaculture.
