Power electronics and communication electronics are both based on electromagnetic theory, but they are usually regarded as two distinct subfields in electrical engineering. In fact, however, electric power is the most common matter-based carrier of messages; thus, power electronics and communications can be jointly considered. Here we study the essential nature of dc-dc power converters and characterize the similarity of their operation principle to that of communication systems. Based on this similarity and the double modulation methods used in power electronics and communication, a double modulation strategy for both power and data is presented and applied in dc-dc power converters to achieve what we call ‘talkative power’. A modulation strategy called frequency hopping-differential phase shift keying (FH-DPSK) is also presented to overcome the crosstalk between chosen transmission systems. The proposed talkative power strategy sheds new light on and provides inspiration for the further development of power electronics and communication.

The energy Internet concept has been considered as a new development stage of the smart grid, which aims to increase the energy transmission efficiency and optimize the energy dispatching in time and space. Energy router is a core device in the energy Internet and it connects all the devices together into a net structure and manages power flows among them. The research work presented in this paper described the energy router's structure and function expectations from the network perspective, and improved the existing energy router design. Open shortest path first (OSPF) protocol and virtual circuit switching mode are referenced from the Internet in the energy local area network (e-LAN) design. This paper proposed a design of an energy routing algorithm based on graph theory in an e-LAN. A lowest cost routing selection algorithm is designed according to the features of power transmission, and a source selection and routing design algorithm is proposed for very heavy load conditions. Both algorithms have been verified by case analyses.

This letter presents a novel simultaneous wireless power and data transmission (SWPDT) system for wireless EV charging. The data carrier is injected and extracted by a plugand- play toroidal-core inductor. Two data carriers of 5 MHz and 6.25 MHz are adopted to achieve bidirectional and full-duplex communication using frequency division multiplexing. Differential quadrature phase-shift keying modulation is achieved by a Class-E amplifier in the data transmitter. An analog switch circuit is designed to demodulate the data carrier in the data receiver. The proposed method is verified by a prototype that achieves up to 64 kbps full-duplex data transmission under 3.3 kW power transfer. The bit rate and interference immunity of data transmission are greatly improved compared to the reported SWPDT systems, which makes it possible to realize high speed simultaneous communication in the kilowatt-level wireless EV charging.

In Photovoltaic (PV) system, dc-dc power optimizer (DCPO) is an option to maximize output power. At the same time, data links among DCPOs are often required for system monitoring and controlling. This paper proposes a novel power line communication (PLC) method for the DCPOs, in which the data of a DCPO is modulated into the control loop of power converter, and then transmitted through the series-connected dc power line to other DCPOs. In the process of communication, differential phase shift keying (DPSK) modulation and discrete Fourier transformation (DFT) demodulation are employed. To analyze the quality of communication, the communication model of the system is built, based on small-signal model. Furthermore, the noises of the system, including switching, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), are discussed and measured to evaluate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). At last, an experimental system including 6 DCPOs is established and tested, which verifies the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Power electronics technology was only aimed at power conversion. However, with its development towards intelligence and modularization, communication needs to be integrated, and later on the info-nature of power converters is proposed. In this scenario, simultaneous power conversion and communication with power converters attract lots of attention, of which power and signal dual modulation (PSDM) is the key. This paper reviews novel PSDM technology with power converters. The principle for PSDM is introduced firstly. Implementation methods are then categorized in terms of the signal forms and injection mechanisms. Subsequently, the merits and demerits of various PSDM methods in each category are analyzed. Finally, comparative analyses and discussions of PSDM methods are presented. With the comprehensive review on PSDM methods, this paper is expected to attract more in-depth research in current research framework and inspire new ideas in this area.

High-power wireless power transfer (WPT) is an attractive option for fast charging of electric vehicles (EVs), but the power capability of the WPT system is limited by power devices and resonant elements. This paper presents a scalable modular four-channel WPT system for fast EV charging. Owing to the modular design, the four-channel system achieves 50 kW output power with low-power Silicon devices, and the reliability and robustness of the system are significantly improved. Through the coil structure and placement design, the four-channel magnetic coupler achieves inter-channel decoupling, eliminating interference between channels, simplifying control logic, and enabling scalable modular design. The four-channel magnetic coupler also has rotational symmetry, making the system have a balanced tolerance to misalignment in both lateral and vertical directions. The proposed magnetic coupler is verified by 3-D finite element method (FEM) simulation. A modular four-channel WPT prototype is built and tested. Experiments show that the prototype can deliver 50.8 kW to load with 97% dc-to-dc efficiency over a 200-mm airgap in aligned case, and has a balanced tolerance to misalignment in both the lateral and vertical directions.
