Intrusion detection systems based on recurrent neural network (RNN) have been considered as one of the effective methods to detect time-series data of in-vehicle networks. However, building a model for each arbitration bit is not only complex in structure but also has high computational overhead. Convolutional neural network (CNN) has always performed excellently in processing images, but they have recently shown great performance in learning features of normal and attack traffic by constructing message matrices in such a manner as to achieve real-time monitoring but suffer from the problem of temporal relationships in context and inadequate feature representation in key regions. Therefore, this paper proposes a temporal convolutional network with global attention to construct an in-vehicle network intrusion detection model, called TCAN-IDS. Specifically, the TCAN-IDS model continuously encodes 19-bit features consisting of an arbitration bit and data field of the original message into a message matrix, which is symmetric to messages recalling a historical moment. Thereafter, the feature extraction model extracts its spatial-temporal detail features. Notably, global attention enables global critical region attention based on channel and spatial feature coefficients, thus ignoring unimportant byte changes. Finally, anomalous traffic is monitored by a two-class classification component. Experiments show that TCAN-IDS demonstrates high detection performance on publicly known attack datasets and is able to accomplish real-time monitoring. In particular, it is anticipated to provide a high level of symmetry between information security and illegal intrusion.

The automotive sector faces escalating security risks due to advances in wireless communication technology. Expanding on our previous research using a sensor pairing technique and machine learning models to evaluate IoT sensor data reliability, this study broadens its scope to address security concerns in Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs). The objectives of this research include identifying and mitigating specific security vulnerabilities related to CAVs, thereby establishing a comprehensive understanding of the risks these vehicles face. Additionally, our study introduces two innovative pairing approaches. The first approach focuses on pairing Electronic Control Units (ECUs) within individual vehicles, while the second extends to pairing entire vehicles, termed as vehicle pairing. Rigorous preprocessing of the dataset was carried out to ensure its readiness for subsequent model training. Leveraging Support Vector Machine (SVM) and TinyML methods for data validation and attack detection, we have been able to achieve an impressive accuracy rate of 97.2%. The proposed security approach notably contributes to the security of CAVs against potential cyber threats. The experimental setup demonstrates the practical application and effectiveness of TinyML in embedded systems within CAVs. Importantly, our proposed solution ensures that these security enhancements do not impose additional memory or network loads on the ECUs. This is accomplished by delegating the intensive cross-validation to the central module or Roadside Units (RSUs). This novel approach not only contributes to mitigating various security loopholes, but paves the way for scalable, efficient solutions for resource-constrained automotive systems.

Machine learning and deep learning techniques integrated with advanced sensing technologies have revolutionized agricultural engineering, addressing complex challenges in food production, quality assessment, and environmental monitoring. This survey presents a systematic review and meta-analysis of recent developments by examining the peer-reviewed literature from 2015 to 2024. The analysis reveals computational approaches ranging from traditional algorithms like support vector machines and random forests to deep learning architectures, including convolutional and recurrent neural networks. Deep learning models often demonstrate superior performance, showing 5–10% accuracy improvements over traditional methods and achieving 93–99% accuracy in image-based applications. Three primary application domains are identified: agricultural product quality assessment using hyperspectral imaging, crop and field management through precision optimization, and agricultural automation with machine vision systems. Dataset taxonomy shows spectral data predominating at 42.1%, followed by image data at 26.2%, indicating preference for non-destructive approaches. Current challenges include data limitations, model interpretability issues, and computational complexity. Future trends emphasize lightweight model development, ensemble learning, and expanding applications. This analysis provides a comprehensive understanding of current capabilities and future directions for machine learning in agricultural engineering, supporting the development of efficient and sustainable agricultural systems for global food security.
