The advancing of glaciers is a manifestation of dynamic glacial instability. Glaciers in the Tien Shan region, especially in the Central Tien Shan, show instability, and advancing glaciers have been recently detected. In this study, we used Landsat TM/ETM+/OLI remote sensing images to identify glaciers in the Tien Shan region from 1990 to 2019 and found that 48 glaciers advanced. Among them, thirty-four glaciers exhibited terminal advances, and 14 glaciers experienced advances on the tributary or trunk. Ten of the glaciers experiencing terminal advances have been identified as surging glaciers. These 48 glaciers are distributed in the western part of the Halik and Kungey Mountain Ranges in the Central Tien Shan, and Fergana Mountains in the Western Tien Shan, indicating that the Tien Shan is also one of the regions where advancing and surging glaciers are active. From 1990 to 2019, a total of 169 times advances occurred on 34 terminal advancing glaciers in the Tien Shan region; the highest number of advancing and surging of glaciers occurred in July (26 and 14 times, respectively). With reference to the existing literature and the present study, the surge cycle in the Tien Shan is longer than that in other regions at high latitudes in Asia, lasting about 35–60 years. Surging glaciers in the Tien Shan region may be affected by a combination of thermal and hydrological control. An increase in temperature and precipitation drives surging glaciers, but the change mechanism is still difficult to explain based on changes in a single climate variable, such as temperature or precipitation.

Plants are ubiquitous in human life. Recognizing an unknown plant by its leaf image quickly is a very interesting and challenging research. With the development of image processing and pattern recognition, plant recognition based on image processing has become possible. Bag of features (BOF) is one of the most powerful models for classification, which has been used for many projects and studies. Dual-output pulse-coupled neural network (DPCNN) has shown a good ability for texture features in image processing such as image segmentation. In this paper, a method based on BOF and DPCNN (BOF_DP) is proposed for leaf classification. BOF_DP achieved satisfactory results in many leaf image datasets. As it is hard to get a satisfactory effect on the large dataset by a single feature, a method (BOF_SC) improved from bag of contour fragments is used for shape feature extraction. BOF_DP and LDA (linear discriminant analysis) algorithms are, respectively, employed for textual feature extraction and reducing the feature dimensionality. Finally, both features are used for classification by a linear support vector machine (SVM), and the proposed method obtained higher accuracy on several typical leaf datasets than existing methods.

The complexity of clouds, particularly in terms of texture detail at high resolutions, has not been well explored by most existing cloud detection networks. We introduce the high-resolution cloud detection network (HR-cloud-Net), which utilizes a hierarchical high-resolution integration approach. HR-cloud-Net integrates a high-resolution representation module, layer-wise cascaded feature fusion module, and multiresolution pyramid pooling module to effectively capture complex cloud features. This architecture preserves detailed cloud texture information while facilitating feature exchange across different resolutions, thereby enhancing the overall performance in cloud detection. Additionally, an approach is introduced wherein a student view, trained on noisy augmented images, is supervised by a teacher view processing normal images. This setup enables the student to learn from cleaner supervisions provided by the teacher, leading to an improved performance. Extensive evaluations on three optical satellite image cloud detection datasets validate the superior performance of HR-cloud-Net compared with existing methods.

Xinjiang is located in an arid and semi-arid climate region in China, but Xinjiang Ili river valley is more humid, with higher precipitation intensity and precipitation, which is closely related to the role of the Tianshan Mountains. In this paper, through the NCRP 1° × 1° reanalysis data and the conventional observation data of the Ili River Valley in Xinjiang, the terrain sensitivity experiment conducted by the WRF model is used to analyze the short-term extreme precipitation event of the Ili River Valley from 18–19 of May 2017, to reveal the influence of Tianshan Mountains on the extreme precipitation event of the Ili River Valley. The results show that: (1) The reduction or removal of the terrain will cause a wide range of wind field changes, weaken the vertical upward movement of the windward slope, and the accumulation of water vapor before the windward slope will also be reduced; a large-scale change of the terrain will also affect the direction of water vapor transportation. These effects together lead to a decrease or increase in regional precipitation. (2) “Fuzzy” (smooth) terrain will affect the precipitation simulated by changing the local vertical movement and water vapor transport, which shows that the WRF model’s accurate description of the terrain structure characteristics of mountainous areas is beneficial to accurately simulate the precipitation process on the windward slope area.

We propose a fast document image thresholding method (FADIT) and evaluations of the two classic methods for demonstrating the effectiveness of FADIT. We put forward two assumptions: (1) the probability of the occurrence of grayscale text and background is ideally two constants, and (2) a pixel with a low grayscale has a high probability of being classified as text and a pixel with a high grayscale has a high probability of being classified as background. With the two assumptions, a new criterion function is applied to document image thresholding in the Bayesian framework. The effectiveness of the method has been borne of a quantitative metric as well as qualitative comparisons with the state-of-the-art methods.
