Power-line inspection is an important means to maintain the safety of power networks. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology can provide high-precision 3D information about power corridors for automated power-line inspection, so there are more and more utility companies relying on LiDAR systems instead of traditional manual operation. However, it is still a challenge to automatically detect power lines with high precision. To achieve efficient and accurate power-line extraction, this paper proposes an algorithm using entropy-weighting feature evaluation (EWFE), which is different from the existing hierarchical-multiple-rule evaluation of many geometric features. Six significant features are selected (Height above Ground Surface (HGS), Vertical Range Ratio (VRR), Horizontal Angle (HA), Surface Variation (SV), Linearity (LI) and Curvature Change (CC)), and then the features are combined to construct a vector for quantitative evaluation. The feature weights are determined by an entropy-weighting method (EWM) to achieve optimal distribution. The point clouds are filtered out by the HGS feature, which possesses the highest entropy value, and a portion of non-power-line points can be removed without loss of power-line points. The power lines are extracted by evaluation of the other five features. To decrease the interference from pylon points, this paper analyzes performance in different pylon situations and performs an adaptive weight transformation. We evaluate the EWFE method using four datasets with different transmission voltage scales captured by a light unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) LiDAR system and a mobile LiDAR system. Experimental results show that our method demonstrates efficient performance, while algorithm parameters remain consistent for the four datasets. The precision F value ranges from 98.4% to 99.7%, and the efficiency ranges from 0.9 million points/s to 5.2 million points/s.
Dense stereo matching has been widely used in photogrammetry and computer vision applications. Even though it has a long research history, dense stereo matching is still challenging for occluded, textureless and discontinuous regions. This paper proposed an efficient and effective matching cost measurement and an adaptive shape guided filter-based matching cost aggregation method to improve the stereo matching performance for large textureless regions. At first, an efficient matching cost function combining enhanced image gradient-based matching cost and improved census transform-based matching cost is introduced. This proposed matching cost function is robust against radiometric variations and textureless regions. Following this, an adaptive shape cross-based window is constructed for each pixel and a modified guided filter based on this adaptive shape window is implemented for cost aggregation. The final disparity map is obtained after disparity selection and multiple steps disparity refinement. Experiments were conducted on the Middlebury benchmark dataset to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed cost measurement and cost aggregation strategy. The experimental results demonstrated that the average matching error rate on Middlebury standard image pairs is 9.40%. Compared with the traditional guided filter-based stereo matching method, the proposed method achieved a better matching result in textureless regions.
Considering the challenges associated with accurately identifying building shape features and distinguishing between building and non-building features during the extraction of buildings from remote sensing images using deep learning, we propose a novel method for building extraction based on U-Net, incorporating a recurrent residual deformable convolution unit (RDCU) module and augmented multi-head self-attention (AMSA). By replacing conventional convolution modules with an RDCU, which adopts a deformable convolutional neural network within a residual network structure, the proposed method enhances the module’s capacity to learn intricate details such as building shapes. Furthermore, AMSA is introduced into the skip connection function to enhance feature expression and positions through content–position enhancement operations and content–content enhancement operations. Moreover, AMSA integrates an additional fusion channel attention mechanism to aid in identifying cross-channel feature expression Intersection over Union (IoU) score differences. For the Massachusetts dataset, the proposed method achieves an Intersection over Union (IoU) score of 89.99%, PA (Pixel Accuracy) score of 93.62%, and Recall score of 89.22%. For the WHU Satellite dataset I, the proposed method achieves an IoU score of 86.47%, PA score of 92.45%, and Recall score of 91.62%, For the INRIA dataset, the proposed method achieves an IoU score of 80.47%, PA score of 90.15%, and Recall score of 85.42%.
Registration is essential for terrestrial LiDAR (light detection and ranging) scanning point clouds. The registration of indoor point clouds is especially challenging due to the occlusion and self-similarity of indoor structures. This paper proposes a 4 degrees of freedom (4DOF) coarse registration method that fully takes advantage of the knowledge that the equipment is levelled or the inclination compensated for by a tilt sensor in data acquisition. The method decomposes the 4DOF registration problem into two parts: (1) horizontal alignment using ortho-projected images and (2) vertical alignment. The ortho-projected images are generated using points between the floor and ceiling, and the horizontal alignment is achieved by the matching of the source and target ortho-projected images using the 2D line features detected from them. The vertical alignment is achieved by making the height of the floor and ceiling in the source and target points equivalent. Two datasets, one with five stations and the other with 20 stations, were used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The experimental results showed that the proposed method achieved 80% and 63% successful registration rates (SRRs) in a simple scene and a challenging scene, respectively. The SRR in the simple scene is only lower than that of the keypoint-based four-point congruent set (K4PCS) method. The SRR in the challenging scene is better than all five comparison methods. Even though the proposed method still has some limitations, the proposed method provides an alternative to solve the indoor point cloud registration problem.
Individual tree modeling for terrestrial LiDAR point clouds always involves heavy computation burden and low accuracy toward a complex tree structure. To solve these problems, this paper proposed a self-adaptive optimization individual tree modeling method. In this paper, we first proposed a joint neighboring growing method to segment wood points into object primitives. Subsequently, local object primitives were optimized to alleviate the computation burden. To build the topology relation among branches, branches were separated based on spatial connectivity analysis. And then the nodes corresponding to each object primitive were adopted to construct the graph structure of the tree. Furthermore, each object primitive was fitted as a cylinder. To revise the local abnormal cylinder, a self-adaptive optimization method based on the constructed graph structure was proposed. Finally, the constructed tree model was further optimized globally based on prior knowledge. Twenty-nine field datasets obtained from three forest sites were adopted to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve satisfying individual tree modeling accuracy. The mean volume deviation of the proposed method is 1.427 m3. In the comparison with two other famous tree modeling methods, the proposed method can achieve the best individual tree modeling result no matter which accuracy indicator is selected.
The degree of automation and efficiency are among the most important factors that influence the availability of Terrestrial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) Scanning (TLS) registration algorithms. This paper proposes an Ortho Projected Feature Images (OPFI) based 4 Degrees of Freedom (DOF) coarse registration method, which is fully automated and with high efficiency, for TLS point clouds acquired using leveled or inclination compensated LiDAR scanners. The proposed 4DOF registration algorithm decomposes the parameter estimation into two parts: (1) the parameter estimation of horizontal translation vector and azimuth angle; and (2) the parameter estimation of the vertical translation vector. The parameter estimation of the horizontal translation vector and the azimuth angle is achieved by ortho projecting the TLS point clouds into feature images and registering the ortho projected feature images by Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) key points and descriptors. The vertical translation vector is estimated using the height difference of source points and target points in the overlapping regions after horizontally aligned. Three real TLS datasets captured by the Riegl VZ-400 and the Trimble SX10 and one simulated dataset were used to validate the proposed method. The proposed method was compared with four state-of-the-art 4DOF registration methods. The experimental results showed that: (1) the accuracy of the proposed coarse registration method ranges from 0.02 m to 0.07 m in horizontal and 0.01 m to 0.02 m in elevation, which is at centimeter-level and sufficient for fine registration; and (2) as many as 120 million points can be registered in less than 50 s, which is much faster than the compared methods.
