The determination of the depth and boundary of the goaf is of great significance for the detection of illegal mining. However, determining the current location of unknown goafs mainly relies on low-efficiency, time-consuming, and labor-intensive physical detection methods such as geomagnetic field changes. Due to their large coverage and high degree of automation, research on remote sensing methods has been conducted to locate mining activities by monitoring surface deformation. This paper proposes a method that relies on the principle of the probability integration method (PIM) and on synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) to retrieve the location of an underground goaf. First, the relationship between ground subsidence and the location of the mined-out area was established according to PIM; then, the location of the mined-out area was obtained by the surface deformation acquired by InSAR. The proposed method does not rely on complex nonlinear models and has complete parameters; therefore, it has higher engineering application value. A test site in the Fengfeng mining area and 11 Radarsat-2 images were used to verify the proposed method. The experimental results showed that the average relative error of the proposed method is 6.35%, which is 27.56% higher than that of similar algorithms based on complex nonlinear models. Compared to algorithms that ignore the coal seam dip, the accuracy is improved to 98.27%.

Dense stereo matching has been widely used in photogrammetry and computer vision applications. Even though it has a long research history, dense stereo matching is still challenging for occluded, textureless and discontinuous regions. This paper proposed an efficient and effective matching cost measurement and an adaptive shape guided filter-based matching cost aggregation method to improve the stereo matching performance for large textureless regions. At first, an efficient matching cost function combining enhanced image gradient-based matching cost and improved census transform-based matching cost is introduced. This proposed matching cost function is robust against radiometric variations and textureless regions. Following this, an adaptive shape cross-based window is constructed for each pixel and a modified guided filter based on this adaptive shape window is implemented for cost aggregation. The final disparity map is obtained after disparity selection and multiple steps disparity refinement. Experiments were conducted on the Middlebury benchmark dataset to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed cost measurement and cost aggregation strategy. The experimental results demonstrated that the average matching error rate on Middlebury standard image pairs is 9.40%. Compared with the traditional guided filter-based stereo matching method, the proposed method achieved a better matching result in textureless regions.

Diameter at breast height (DBH) is a crucial parameter for forest inventory. However, accurately estimating DBH remains challenging due to the noisy and incomplete cross-sectional points. To address this, this paper proposed a reliable DBH estimation method using terrestrial LiDAR points through polar coordinate transformation and progressive outlier removal. In this paper, the initial center was initially detected by rasterizing the convex hull, and then the Cartesian coordinates were transformed into polar coordinates. In the polar coordinate system, the outliers were classified as low and high outliers according to the distribution of polar radius difference. Both types of outliers were then removed using adaptive thresholds and the moving least squares algorithm. Finally, DBH was estimated by calculating the definite integral of arc length in the polar coordinate system. Twenty publicly available individual trees were adopted for the test. Experimental results indicated that the proposed method performs better than the other four classical DBH estimation methods. Furthermore, several extreme cases scanned using terrestrial LiDAR in practice, such as cross-sectional points with lots of outliers or larger data gaps, were also tested. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method accurately calculates DBH even in these challenging cases.

Illegal mining is one of the biggest problems in many coal mines. With the rapid development of the economy, driven by huge economic benefits, some outlaws illegally exploit mineral resources without a mining license, which is destructive and a potential safety hazard. In order to avoid inspection by law enforcement officials, some outlaws, regardless of the cost or risk, privately and surreptitiously excavate coal mines in self-built houses. The coal resources they excavate are shallow coal resources. Because surface buildings can maintain strong and stable radar scattering characteristics over a long time series, in this study, we combined PS-InSAR technology and high-resolution optical remote sensing to extract the subsidence information of surface buildings corresponding to PS point sets and analyzed their spatiotemporal characteristics. Finally, we developed a fast and accurate method for detecting suspected illegal mining sites from building subsidence information over a larger area. We also carried out a case study using Shandi Village, a suburb of Yangquan City, Shanxi Province, China, as our research object. QuickBird-2, WorldView-2 data, and 20 PALSAR scenes were selected for the experimental research, and two illegal mining sites were detected from 29 December 2006 to 9 January 2011. By comparing our results with previous investigation data, it was found that the accuracy rate reached 40% in local areas, and the detection rate reached 66.67%. In addition, the mining periods were basically consistent. This research shows that our method is feasible and has certain engineering applicability and practical value.

Tree species classification is a ubiquitous task in the forest inventory field. Only directly measured feature vectors have been applied to most existing methods that use LiDAR technology for tree species classification. As a result, it is difficult to obtain a satisfactory tree species classification performance. To solve this challenge, the authors of this paper developed two new kinds of feature vectors, including fractal geometry-based feature vectors and quantitative structural model (QSM)-based feature vectors. In terms of fractal geometry, both two fractal parameters were extracted as feature vectors for reflecting how tree architecture is distributed in three-dimensional space. In terms of QSM, the ratio of length change and the ratio of radius change of different branches were extracted as feature vectors. To reduce the feature vector dimensionality and explore valuable feature vectors, feature vector dimension reduction was conducted using the classification and regression tree (CART). Five hundred and sixty-eight individual trees with five tree species were selected for evaluating the performance of the developed feature vectors. The experimental results indicate that the tree species of Fagus sylvatica achieved the highest overall accuracy, which is 98.06%, while Quercus petraea obtained the lowest overall accuracy, which is 96.65%. Four other classical supervised learning methods were adopted for comparison. The comparison result indicates that the proposed method outperformed the other four supervised learning methods no matter which accuracy indicator was adopted. In comparison with the relevant method, the eight feature vectors developed in this paper also performed much better. This indicates that the fractal geometry-based feature vectors and QSM-based feature vectors developed in this paper can effectively improve the performance of tree species classification.

Ground surface deformation in mines affects mining production, damages the ecological environment, and endangers human safety. Mastering the detailed time series deformation and related triggering factors can provide key information for the safety of the mining area. Therefore, the Fengcheng mining area, a large and ancient coal mine in Jiangxi Province, China, was selected as the study area in this work, and the following research was conducted: 1. The accuracy and applicability of the Stacking, Small-Baseline Subset InSAR (SBAS-InSAR), and Interferometric Point Target Analysis (IPTA) methods were preliminarily explored while monitoring the annual deformation rate based on Sentinel-1A data from October 2019 to November 2022. 2. The time-series deformation of the Fengcheng mining area was obtained with SBAS-InSAR technology, and the sedimentation was validated with leveling results. 3. The correlation factors of deformation, such as rainfall and land cover, were studied, and the relationship between the influencing factors, such as coal mining dip angle, digital elevation, coal mining elevation, and deformation, was quantitatively explored with the Grey correlation model and Pearson correlation analysis method. The following conclusions were drawn: The SBAS method has the best adaptability in the dense vegetation mining area, and the root-mean-square error of the difference between deformation results and leveling data does not exceed 4mm. The evolution process of deformation centers is mainly divided into the stages of initial deformation, constant velocity deformation, accelerated deformation, and stable condition. Compared with the natural factors, the settlement of the Fengcheng mining area is mainly affected by human-induced mining and construction of artificial facilities.
