The integration of Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) and Cooperative Relay (CoR) techniques has evolved as a new phenomenon for the next generation wireless communication system. CoR is used to get energy and spectral efficient network and to solve the issues of fading, path loss, shadowing, smaller coverage area and so on. Relay nodes are battery-constrained or battery-less devices. They need some charging systems externally as replacing or recharging of their batteries sometimes are not feasible and convenient. Energy harvesting (EH) is the most cost-effective, suitable and safer solution to power up these relays. Among various types of EH, SWIPT is the most prominent technique as it provides spectral efficiency by delivering energy and information to the relays at the same time. This paper reviews the combination of CoR and SWIPT. From basic to advanced architectures, applications and taxonomies of CoR and SWIPT are presented, various forms of resource allocation and relay selection algorithms are covered. The usage of CoR and SWIPT in 5th generation (5G) wireless networks are discussed. This paper focuses on the integral aspects of CoR and SWIPT to other next-generation wireless communication systems and techniques such as multiple-input-multiple-output, wireless sensor network, cognitive radio, vehicular ad hoc network, non-orthogonal multiple access, beamforming technique, and the Internet of things. Some open issues and future directions and challenges are given in the paper.

Traffic congestion is a complex, vexing, and growing issue day by day in most urban areas worldwide. The integration of the newly emerging deep learning approach and the traditional reinforcement learning approach has created an advanced approach called deep reinforcement learning (DRL) that has shown promising results in solving high-dimensional and complex problems, including traffic congestion. This article presents a review of the attributes of traffic signal control (TSC), as well as DRL architectures and methods applied to TSC, which helps to understand how DRL has been applied to address traffic congestion and achieve performance enhancement. The review also covers simulation platforms, a complexity analysis, as well as guidelines and design considerations for the application of DRL to TSC. Finally, this article presents open issues and new research areas with the objective to spark new interest in this research field. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review article that focuses on the application of DRL to TSC.

Nowadays, machine learning (ML), which is one of the most rapidly growing technical tools, is extensively used to solve critical challenges in various domains. Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is expected to be the key role player in reducing road casualties and traffic congestion. To ensure this role, a gigantic amount of data should be exchanged. However, current allocated wireless access for VANET is inadequate to handle such massive data amounts. Therefore, VANET faces a spectrum scarcity issue. Cognitive radio (CR) is a promising solution to overcome such an issue. CR-based VANET or CR-VANET must achieve several performance enhancement measures, including ultra-reliable and low-latency communication. ML methods can be integrated with CR-VANET to make CR-VANET highly intelligent, achieve rapid adaptability to the dynamicity of the environment, and improve the quality of service in an energy-efficient manner. This paper presents an overview of ML, CR, VANET, and CR-VANET, including their architectures, functions, challenges, and open issues. The applications and roles of ML methods in CR-VANET scenarios are reviewed. Insights into the use of ML for autonomous or driver-less vehicles are also presented. Current advancements in the amalgamation of these prominent technologies and future research directions are discussed.

Flying ad hoc network (FANET) is a self-organizing wireless network that enables inexpensive, flexible, and easy-to-deploy flying nodes, such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), to communicate among themselves in the absence of fixed network infrastructure. FANET is one of the emerging networks that has an extensive range of next-generation applications. Hence, FANET plays a significant role in achieving application-based goals. Routing enables the flying nodes to collaborate and coordinate among themselves and to establish routes to radio access infrastructure, particularly FANET base station (BS). With a longer route lifetime, the effects of link disconnections and network partitions reduce. Routing must cater to two main characteristics of FANETs that reduce the route lifetime. Firstly, the collaboration nature requires the flying nodes to exchange messages and to coordinate among themselves, causing high energy consumption. Secondly, the mobility pattern of the flying nodes is highly dynamic in a three-dimensional space and they may be spaced far apart, causing link disconnection. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of the limited research work of routing schemes in FANETs. Different aspects, including objectives, challenges, routing metrics, characteristics, and performance measures, are covered. Furthermore, we present open issues.

Extending the lifetime of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and minimizing energy costs are the two most significant concerns for data transmission. Sensor nodes are powered by their own battery capacity, allowing them to perform critical tasks and interact with other nodes. The quantity of electricity saved from each sensor together in a WSN has been strongly linked to the network’s longevity. Clustering conserves the most power in wireless transmission, but the absence of a mechanism for selecting the most suitable cluster head (CH) node increases the complexity of data collection and the power usage of the sensor nodes. Additionally, the disparity in energy consumption can lead to the premature demise of nodes, reducing the network’s lifetime. Metaheuristics are used to solve non-deterministic polynomial (NP) lossy clustering problems. The primary purpose of this research is to enhance the energy efficiency and network endurance of WSNs. To address this issue, this work proposes a solution where hybrid particle swarm optimization (HPSO) is paired with improved low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (HPSO-ILEACH) for CH selection in cases of data aggregation in order to increase energy efficiency and maximize the network stability of the WSN. In this approach, HPSO determines the CH, the distance between the cluster’s member nodes, and the residual energy of the nodes. Then, ILEACH is used to minimize energy expenditure during the clustering process by adjusting the CH. Finally, the HPSO-ILEACH algorithm was successfully implemented for aggregating data and saving energy, and its performance was compared with three other algorithms: low energy-adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH), improved low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (ILEACH), and enhanced PSO-LEACH (ESO-LEACH). The results of the simulation studies show that HPSO-ILEACH increased the network lifetime, with an average of 55% of nodes staying alive, while reducing energy consumption average by 28% compared to the other mentioned techniques.
