Internet of Drones (IoD) is a decentralized network and management framework that links drones' access to the controlled airspace and provides inter-location navigation services. The interconnection of drones in the IoD network is through the Internet of Things (IoT). Hence the IoD network is vulnerable to all the security and privacy threats that affect IoT networks. It is highly required to safeguard a good atmosphere free from security and privacy threats to get the desired performance from IoD applications. Security and privacy issues have significantly restricted the overall influence of the IoD paradigm. There are existing survey studies that helped lay a vital foundation for understanding the IoD security and privacy issues. However, not all have thoroughly investigated the level of security and privacy threats associated with the various drone categories. Besides, most existing review studies do not examine secured IoD architecture. This paper aims to assess the recent trends in the security and privacy issues that affect the IoD network. We investigate the level of security and privacy threats of the various drone categories. We then highlight the need for secured IoD architecture and propose one. We also give a comprehensive taxonomy of the attacks on the IoD network. Moreover, we review the recent IoD attack mitigating techniques. We also provide the performance evaluation methods and the performance metrics employed by the techniques. Finally, we give research future direction to help researchers identify the latest opportunities in IoD research.

The domain of underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) had received a lot of attention recently due to its significant advanced capabilities in the ocean surveillance, marine monitoring and application deployment for detecting underwater targets. However, the literature have not compiled the state-of-the-art along its direction to discover the recent advancements which were fuelled by the underwater sensor technologies. Hence, this paper offers the newest analysis on the available evidences by reviewing studies in the past five years on various aspects that support network activities and applications in UWSN environments. This work was motivated by the need for robust and flexible solutions that can satisfy the requirements for the rapid development of the underwater wireless sensor networks. This paper identifies the key requirements for achieving essential services as well as common platforms for UWSN. It also contributes a taxonomy of the critical elements in UWSNs by devising a classification on architectural elements, communications, routing protocol and standards, security, and applications of UWSNs. Finally, the major challenges that remain open are presented as a guide for future research directions.

Rapidly-exploring Random Trees (RRTs) are successful in single-query motion planning problems. The standard version of RRT grows a tree from a start location and stops once it reached the goal configuration. RRT-Connect is the bidirectional version of RRT, which grows two trees simultaneously. These two trees try to establish a connection to stop searching. RRT-Connect finds solutions faster than RRT. Following that, an asymptotically optimal version of RRT-Connect called RRT*-Connect has been introduced. It not only rewires both trees while they are growing, but also it keeps searching the state space for better solutions than the current one. However, it is inefficient and inconsistent to search all over the state space in order to find better solutions than the current one concerning its single-query nature. The better way is to look through states that can provide a better solution. In this paper, we propose Informed RRT*-Connect, which is the informed version of RRT*-Connect that uses direct sampling after the first solution found. Unlike RRT*-Connect, the proposed method checks only the states that can potentially provide better solutions than the current solution. The proposed method benefited from the properties of RRT*-Connect and informed sampling, which offers low-cost solutions with fewer iterations in comparison to RRT*-Connect. Different simulations in OMPL have been carried out to show the significance of Informed RRT*-Connect in comparison with RRT*, Informed RRT*, and RRT*-Connect.

Internet of Things (IoT) facilitates the integration between objects and different sensors to provide communication among them without human intervention. However, the extensive demand for IoT and its various applications has continued to grow, coupled with the need to achieve foolproof security requirements. IoT produces a vast amount of data under several constraints such as low processor, power, and memory. These constraints, along with the invaluable data produced by IoT devices, make IoT vulnerable to various security attacks. This paper presents an overview of IoT, its well-known system architecture, enabling technologies, and discusses security challenges and goals. Furthermore, we analyze security vulnerabilities and provide state-of-the-art security taxonomy. The taxonomy of the most relevant and current IoT security attacks is presented for application, network, and physical layers. While most other surveys studied one of the areas of security measures, this study considers and reports on the most advanced security countermeasures within the areas of autonomic, encryption, and learning-based approaches. Additionally, we uncover security challenges that may be met by the research community regarding security implementation in heterogeneous IoT environment. Finally, we provide different visions about possible security solutions and future research directions.

Nowadays, machine learning (ML), which is one of the most rapidly growing technical tools, is extensively used to solve critical challenges in various domains. Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is expected to be the key role player in reducing road casualties and traffic congestion. To ensure this role, a gigantic amount of data should be exchanged. However, current allocated wireless access for VANET is inadequate to handle such massive data amounts. Therefore, VANET faces a spectrum scarcity issue. Cognitive radio (CR) is a promising solution to overcome such an issue. CR-based VANET or CR-VANET must achieve several performance enhancement measures, including ultra-reliable and low-latency communication. ML methods can be integrated with CR-VANET to make CR-VANET highly intelligent, achieve rapid adaptability to the dynamicity of the environment, and improve the quality of service in an energy-efficient manner. This paper presents an overview of ML, CR, VANET, and CR-VANET, including their architectures, functions, challenges, and open issues. The applications and roles of ML methods in CR-VANET scenarios are reviewed. Insights into the use of ML for autonomous or driver-less vehicles are also presented. Current advancements in the amalgamation of these prominent technologies and future research directions are discussed.

Extending the lifetime of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and minimizing energy costs are the two most significant concerns for data transmission. Sensor nodes are powered by their own battery capacity, allowing them to perform critical tasks and interact with other nodes. The quantity of electricity saved from each sensor together in a WSN has been strongly linked to the network’s longevity. Clustering conserves the most power in wireless transmission, but the absence of a mechanism for selecting the most suitable cluster head (CH) node increases the complexity of data collection and the power usage of the sensor nodes. Additionally, the disparity in energy consumption can lead to the premature demise of nodes, reducing the network’s lifetime. Metaheuristics are used to solve non-deterministic polynomial (NP) lossy clustering problems. The primary purpose of this research is to enhance the energy efficiency and network endurance of WSNs. To address this issue, this work proposes a solution where hybrid particle swarm optimization (HPSO) is paired with improved low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (HPSO-ILEACH) for CH selection in cases of data aggregation in order to increase energy efficiency and maximize the network stability of the WSN. In this approach, HPSO determines the CH, the distance between the cluster’s member nodes, and the residual energy of the nodes. Then, ILEACH is used to minimize energy expenditure during the clustering process by adjusting the CH. Finally, the HPSO-ILEACH algorithm was successfully implemented for aggregating data and saving energy, and its performance was compared with three other algorithms: low energy-adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH), improved low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (ILEACH), and enhanced PSO-LEACH (ESO-LEACH). The results of the simulation studies show that HPSO-ILEACH increased the network lifetime, with an average of 55% of nodes staying alive, while reducing energy consumption average by 28% compared to the other mentioned techniques.
