Global environmental changes, nuclear power risks, losses in the electricity grid, and rising energy costs are increasing the desire to rely on more renewable energy for electricity generation. Recently, most people prefer to live and work in smart places like smart cities and smart universities which integrating smart grid systems. The large part of these smart grid systems is based on hybrid energy sources which make the energy management a challenging task. Thus, the design of an intelligent energy management controller is required. The present paper proposes an intelligent energy management controller based on combined fuzzy logic and fractional-order proportional-integral-derivative (FO-PID) controller methods for a smart DC-microgrid. The hybrid energy sources integrated into the DC-microgrid are constituted by a battery bank, wind energy, and photovoltaic (PV) energy source. The source-side converters (SSCs) are controller by the new intelligent fractional order PID strategy to extract the maximum power from the renewable energy sources (wind and PV) and improve the power quality supplied to the DC-microgrid. To make the microgrid as cost-effective, the (wind and PV) energy sources are prioritized. The proposed controller ensures smooth output power and service continuity. Simulation results of the proposed control schema under Matlab/Simulink are presented and compared with the super twisting fractional-order controller.

This work presents a metamaterial absorber (MMA) for X- and Ku-bands with a metallic resonating patch on top and a ground plane separated by substrate FR-4 with a thickness of 0.053 λ at the lowest resonance frequency. The proposed MMA demonstrates perfect absorption of 99.42, 98.48, 98.92, and 99.34 % at 9.948, 13.26, 14.92, and 15.80 GHz, respectively at normal incidence. The proposed MMA demonstrates perfect absorption for a polarization and incident angle over a wide range of angles up to 45°. To understand the fundamental EM behavior of the metamaterial structure, equivalent circuit analysis was carried out, and the circuit outputs accorded with the simulation results. This article also compares various machine learning (ML) methods for optimizing the design and predictive modeling of MMAs, such as decision trees, K-nearest neighbors, random forests, extra trees (ET), bagging, LightGBM, XGBoost, hist gradient boosting, cat boost, and gradient boosting regressors. The primary objective is to assess the usefulness of each regressor technique in estimating the performance of MMAs using multiple tests ranging from TC-40 to TC-80 and performance metrics such as adjusted R-squared score, MSE, RMSE, and MAE, in which the ET regressor excels. Simulation results suggest that ML-based techniques can save simulation resources and time while still being an efficient tool for predicting absorber behavior at intermediate and subsequent frequencies.

Automated brain tumor segmentation from reconstructed microwave (RMW) brain images and image classification is essential for the investigation and monitoring of the progression of brain disease. The manual detection, classification, and segmentation of tumors are extremely time-consuming but crucial tasks due to the tumor’s pattern. In this paper, we propose a new lightweight segmentation model called MicrowaveSegNet (MSegNet), which segments the brain tumor, and a new classifier called the BrainImageNet (BINet) model to classify the RMW images. Initially, three hundred (300) RMW brain image samples were obtained from our sensors-based microwave brain imaging (SMBI) system to create an original dataset. Then, image preprocessing and augmentation techniques were applied to make 6000 training images per fold for a 5-fold cross-validation. Later, the MSegNet and BINet were compared to state-of-the-art segmentation and classification models to verify their performance. The MSegNet has achieved an Intersection-over-Union (IoU) and Dice score of 86.92% and 93.10%, respectively, for tumor segmentation. The BINet has achieved an accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and specificity of 89.33%, 88.74%, 88.67%, 88.61%, and 94.33%, respectively, for three-class classification using raw RMW images, whereas it achieved 98.33%, 98.35%, 98.33%, 98.33%, and 99.17%, respectively, for segmented RMW images. Therefore, the proposed cascaded model can be used in the SMBI system.

This article presents numerical analysis of an ultrathin concentric hexagonal ring resonator (CHRR) metamaterial absorber (MMA) for ultrawideband visible and infrared optical window applications. The proposed MMA exhibits an absorption of above 90% from 380 to 2500 nm and an average absorbance of 96.64% at entire operational bandwidth with a compact unit cell size of 66 × 66 nm2. The designed MMA shows maximum absorption of 99% at 618 nm. The absorption bandwidth of the MMA covers the entire visible and infrared optical windows. The nickel material has been used to design the top and bottom layer of MMA, where aluminium nitride (AlN) has been used as the substrate. The designed hexagonal MMA shows polarization-independent properties due to the symmetry of the design and a stable absorption label is also achieved for oblique incident angles up to 70 °C. The absorption property of hexagonal ring resonator MMA has been analyzed by design evaluation, parametric and various material investigations. The metamaterial property, surface current allocation, magnetic field and electric field have also been analyzed to explore the absorption properties. The proposed MMA has promising prospects in numerous applications like infrared detection, solar cells, gas detection sensors, imaging, etc.

An oblique angle and polarization insensitive metamaterial absorber (MA) are highly desired for the visible and infrared optical applications like, wave energy harvesting, optical filters, and detecting thermal leaks and electrical defects. In this paper, a multi-layered MA consisting of two layers of tungsten resonators on a silicon dioxide substrate, coated with additional SiO2 materials is investigated. The unit cell size of the MA is 0.5λ × 0.5λ × 0.8λ, at the lowest wavelength. The proposed MA offers an average absorption of 92% from 400 nm to 2400 nm with stable oblique incident angles up to 45°. The structure also achieves polarization insensitivity at the entire visible and near-infrared spectrum. Moreover, the MA is found highly compatible for solar absorber applications with high y AAM1.5. The structure is also compatible for filter application in optical communication system by modifying the plasmonic nano structure. The modified structure can block the wavelengths of the visible band (450 nm to 800 nm) and transmit optical communication bands (800 to 1675 nm). These versatile absorption and filtering performance make the proposed design highly potential for solar energy harvesting, photodetection, thermal imaging, photo-trapping, and optical communications applications.
