The article is devoted to the issue of a low sweep efficiency in the heterogeneous terrigenous reservoirs containing remaining oil. Water plugging operations that redirect the injection fluid flows into unswept zones, are one approach to enhancing the oil recovery in these reservoirs. The commonly used chemical reagents in these treatments are acrylate polymer solutions. The polymer solutions must reach the target water-saturated zones and form a strong gel barrier there. Furthermore, the polymer compositions should have a low initial viscosity to provide a good injectivity and penetration ability. Therefore, the methods of adjusting the gelation time are necessary. There are numerous studies in modern scientific society devoted to the study of water-plugging polymer compositions. However, aspects, such as the effect of the hydrogen index on gelation, have received insufficient attention. In this paper, we describe the features of the developed polymer composition, based on a hydrolyzed polymer of acrylonitrile with a controlled gelation time for the chemically enhanced oil recovery. The component composition and the concentration levels were selected, based on the alterations in the hydrogen index of the polymer solution. It was scientifically proven that by adhering to a neutral hydrogen index, it is possible to improve the properties of the polymer composition. Moreover, using a model of a heterogeneous reservoir, it was confirmed that the proposed polymer composition achieves selective plugging. As a result of the polymer gel treatment, the water cut decreased by 4% and the displacement coefficient of oil increased by 20%, in comparison with the effect of the original composition without a gel-time modifier.

This article reviews the results of measurement of optical properties of oil, such as polarimetry, refractometric, luminescent-bituminological research, IR-spectrometry and UV-visible-NIR spectrometry used to solve geo-bituminology development of hydrocarbon deposits. The authors pay special attention to optical research in the field of UV-visible-NIR electromagnetic radiation, the results of which allow us to estimate the residual oil reserves, separate production for each formation during the operation of multi-layer objects, determine the producing gas-oil ratio, density and content of hydrocarbons, efficiency of hydraulic fracturing, flow-reducing technologies, and injection of solvents of heavy oil sediments, etc. The published approaches to methods of optical research, which are carried out by laboratories or in-well devices, have been analyzed. This article analyzes the main advantages and disadvantages of current technologies for determining the optical properties of oil. The authors propose wellhead devices for determining the optical properties of oil in UV-visible-NIR radiation (190–1100 nm) and their functional schemes, with a description of the operating principle.

This paper presents a review of modern methods and technologies for extracting high- (HVO) and extra-high-viscous oil (EHVO). Special attention is given to thermal, physico-chemical, and combined enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods based on the synergistic effect of these approaches. Theoretical aspects of these technologies, their applicability limits, and their practical implementation are considered. The article describes the main complicating factors in the extraction of HVO and EHVO using the reviewed methods, one of which is the high water cut in well production. We analyse the mechanisms of water production in HVO and EHVO fields. The paper highlights the experience of developing HVO and EHVO fields, primarily in Russia, and examines laboratory and field studies, ongoing projects, and future prospects. The authors of this paper have analysed the available literature and have provided further recommendations for studying these technologies. We hope that this work will be useful to all those interested in the challenges of oil production.

Residual oil (RO) in terrigenous reservoirs formed after waterflooding can exceed 60% of the original oil in place; approximately 70% is trapped at the macro-scale in barriers and lenses, whereas about 30% remains at the micro-scale as film and capillary-held oil. This review aims to synthesize current knowledge of RO formation mechanisms, localization methods and chemical recovery technologies. It analyzes laboratory, numerical and field studies published from 1970 to 2025. The physical and technological factors governing RO distribution are systematized, and the effects of heterogeneities of various types, imperfections in pressure-maintenance (waterflood) systems and contrasts in oil–water properties are demonstrated. Instrumental monitoring techniques—vertical seismic profiling (VSP), well logging (WL), hydrodynamic well testing (WT) and geochemical well testing (GWT)—are discussed alongside indirect analytical approaches such as retrospective production-data analysis and neural-network forecasting. Industrial experience from more than 30,000 selective permeability-reduction operations, which have yielded over 50 Mt of additional oil, is consolidated. The advantages of gel systems of different chemistries are evaluated, and the prospects of employing waste products from agro-industrial, metallurgical and petroleum sectors as reagents are considered. The findings indicate that integrating multi-level neural-network techniques with instrumental monitoring and adaptive selection of chemical formulations is crucial for maximizing RO recovery.

This study addresses the need for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in mature reservoirs, particularly in Russian oil fields that have undergone prolonged production and exhibit declining performance. Among EOR techniques, polymer flooding remains one of the most widely applied and effective methods following conventional waterflooding. In this work, the rheological and viscoelastic behavior of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) solutions and their impact on oil displacement efficiency in heterogeneous reservoirs were investigated. Two polymers with different molecular weights were evaluated using steady shear, oscillatory rheology, and one-dimensional core flooding experiments. The results revealed pronounced shear-thinning behavior, with viscosity increasing with polymer concentration and molecular weight. Viscoelasticity was observed only for the high-molecular-weight polymer, characterized by a well-defined linear viscoelastic region and relaxation behavior sensitive to pore size, salinity, and temperature. Core flooding experiments showed that waterflooding recovered 30–31% OOIP, while high-molecular-weight polymer injection increased recovery to ~62% OOIP. In contrast, low-molecular-weight polymer yielded only ~40% OOIP, whereas a combined injection strategy achieved up to 74–76% OOIP. These findings highlight the critical role of polymer molecular weight and viscoelasticity in improving sweep efficiency and enhancing oil recovery in heterogeneous reservoirs.
