Lonneke Goddijn-Murphy is an expert in marine optics and physics and has been researching the remote sensing of various aspects of the sea surface such as ocean color, marine plastic pollution, air–sea gas exchange, whitecapping, ocean waves, and wave energy. She obtained a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Experimental Physics at the State University of Leiden, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Leiden, The Netherlands, from 1984 to 1990 and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Physical Oceanography at the National University of Ireland, Galway, Martin Ryan Institute for Marine Science, Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences from 2002 to 2007.
