Full Professor of Architectural Representation at Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna, Department of Architecture. A specialist in 3D computer imaging, modelling, and visualisation, he was one of the first developers/users of laser scanning technology in the heritage field and also developed photogrammetry- and photography-related technologies. He experimented with these technologies in detailed 3D surveys of many monuments from the Colosseum to Bologna’s porticoes. He designed many Heritage IS and digital libraries including the 3D-based IS for the Pompeii archaeological area (in collaboration with SNS of Pisa) and the PALLADIOlibrary for the Palladio Museum in Vicenza. Recently, he was responsible for the restoration of the Neptune Fountain in Bologna created by Jean de Boulogne (2015–2017).
