Gout is a metabolic condition, common to animals and humans, issuing from the excessive accumulation of end products of proteins degradation. In this study, histopathological and cytological examinations, combined with Raman spectroscopy, have been performed to investigate tissue samples from reptiles, chickens, and humans, presenting lesions produced by uric acid accumulation. As a result of classic processing and staining techniques commonly used in the anatomopathological diagnosis, uric acid crystals lose their structural characteristics, thus making difficult a precise diagnostic. Therefore, complementary diagnostic methods, such as Raman spectroscopy, are needed. This study compares from several perspectives the above mentioned diagnostic methods, concluding that Raman spectroscopy provides highlights in the diagnosis of gout in humans and animals, also adding useful information to differential diagnosis of lesions.

Paraganglioma is a rare neuroendocrine neoplasm originating from paraganglia and consisting of neuroendocrine cells of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Extra-adrenal paraganglioma occurs with a low incidence in both humans and animals. This report presents the first case of paraganglioma in a cat with orbital primary location. An 18-year-old spayed female European domestic shorthair cat of 3.60 kg body weight was evaluated in a private veterinary clinic in Perugia, Italy, for a pronounced exophthalmos of the right eye. The cat underwent surgery for the enucleation of the right eye and of the mass. The biopsy samples of the removed tissue were fixed in 10% buffered neutral formalin for histological and immunohistochemical evaluations. Therefore, specific markers were used for immunohistochemical investigations, such as anti-neuron specific enolase (NSE), anti-synaptophysin, anti-glial fibrillary acid protein, anti-cytokeratin and anti-chromogranin. The results of these investigations allowed establishing the final diagnosis of ocular extra-adrenal paraganglioma of the cat.

Agonal thrombus is infrequently discussed in veterinary forensic pathology, being misdiagnosed as postmortem coagulation. The main purpose of the present study is to confirm that agonal thrombosis is an important tool in ruling out sudden death and to characterize it by gross, histological, and immunohistochemical approaches. The investigations have been conducted on 56 domestic carnivores. Fibrin was observed as rosette—like arrangements around platelet aggregates, loose network, wave—like pattern or short fibers and the additional tendency of lines of Zahn being noted inconsistently. All agonal thrombi had positive reactions for anti—CD61 for platelets, disposed in variable—sized clumps or in a linear pattern close to endothelial cells of endocardium. The same positive reaction has been noted to anti—fibrinogen and anti—fibrin antibodies. CD45, CD68 and von Willebrand factor had a very low to absent expression. Cardiac lesions were found in 22 cases (39.29%) suggesting predisposition to agonal thrombosis in animals with cardiovascular diseases. The results prove that agonal thrombus is a third category of blood coagulation that forms strictly during agonal death. The microscopical findings describe the agonal thrombus similar to the morphology of recent thrombus vera. Given the results, the agonal thrombus is a useful tool that confirms the agonal suffering prior to death.

This review explores sexual aggression in broiler breeder males, aiming to synthesize existing scientific evidence regarding its causes, behavioral manifestations, and consequences, while addressing the genetic, neuroendocrine, and environmental mechanisms involved. Through an extensive analysis of scientific literature, the paper highlights that intensive genetic selection aimed at enhancing growth and productivity has resulted in unintended behavioral dysfunctions. These include the reduction or absence of courtship behavior, the occurrence of forced copulations, and a notable increase in injury rates among hens. Reproductive challenges observed in meat-type breeder flocks, in contrast to those in layer lines, appear to stem from selection practices that have overlooked traits related to mating behavior. Environmental and managerial conditions, including photoperiod manipulation, stocking density, nutritional imbalances, and the use of mixed-sex rearing systems, are also identified as contributing factors to the expression of sexual aggression. Furthermore, recent genetic findings indicate a potential link between inherited neurobehavioral factors and aggressive behavior, with the SORCS2 gene emerging as a relevant candidate. Based on these insights, the review emphasizes the importance of considering behavioral parameters in breeding programs in order to reconcile productivity objectives with animal welfare standards. Future research may benefit from a more integrative approach that combines behavioral, physiological, and genomic data to better understand and address the multifactorial nature of sexual aggression in poultry systems.

This paper reports on the development and implementation of a digital pathology platform aimed at improving veterinary students’ learning experiences. Traditional pathology labs limit individual access to physical slides, restricting independent study and detailed examination. The platform provides on-demand access to a comprehensive library of high-resolution digital slides, enabling flexible and personalized learning. Using a mixed-method approach, including surveys and usage analytics, we evaluated its impact on student outcomes. Results showed a significant increase in student engagement and satisfaction, with median usefulness ratings of 5 on a 5-point scale. Usage data indicated enhanced study habits, including increased incidence of students reviewing digital slides independently compared to traditional methods. Qualitative feedback highlighted the platform’s high-resolution imaging and zoom functionality as key features improving students’ understanding of histopathological details. Minor challenges during digitization were addressed to optimize accessibility and interactivity. Overall, this digital platform supports the development of essential diagnostic skills and aligns with contemporary veterinary education skills. The findings demonstrate that integrating digital pathology resources can effectively complement conventional teaching, fostering deeper learning and greater flexibility in study practices.

The literature in this field cites various ubiquitous fungal and bacterial microorganisms as etiologic agents in severely stressed captive alligators and crocodiles. This study reports two cases of Alligator mississippiensis with bacterial and fungal disease. Two adult American alligators have been submitted for post-mortem investigations. Necropsy, cytology (MGG), and histopathology investigations (HE, HEA, PAS, Gram, Giemsa, Ziehl Neelsen) were carried out. Pleural and pericardial swabs were subjected to microbiological examination. The main lesions detected involved the lower respiratory system and were characterized by thoracic serosanguineous effusions, pleural and pulmonary nodules (1 – 80 mm), accompanied by edema. Similar nodules observed also in the liver, spleen and myocardium, suggested a systemic disease. Additionally, cutaneous, gingival and gastrointestinal erosions and ulcers were found. Cytoarchitecture findings in the major organs revealed lymphoid depletion, multifocal to coalescing necrotic areas with coccoid aggregates and rod shaped bacteria intermixing fungal structures, boarded by heterogeneous inflammatory infiltrates, composed by epithelioid macrophages, lymphocytes and heterophils. The microbiological examination revealed the presence of Aeromonas hydrophila , A. caviae , Serratia marcescens , Pantoea agglomerans , Proteus vulgaris , haemolitic and non-haemolitic E. coli , Citrobacter freundii , Rhizopus/Absidia from pleural and pericardial cavities, concluding that death occurred following a bacterial and fungal pneumonia, with secondary spreading of microorganisms. Along with the low immune response, severe stress was the main possible cause, as a result of environmental temperature changes during the winter, as well as other husbandry issues.
