Dr. Yoke Khin Yap is a professor of physics, director of the applied physics graduate program, and the associate department chair at Michigan Technological University (MTU). He earned research honors, including the National Science Foundation CAREER award, the Bhakta Rath Research Award, the Global Alumni Fellow of Osaka University, the MTU Research Award, and the honorable “University Professor” title at MTU. He is interested in the fundamentals of synthesis, characterization, and applications of functional materials, including zero-, one-, and two-dimensional B-C-N nanostructures (carbon, boron nitride, boron carbon-nitride, carbon nitride, boron, etc.), transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), and ZnO. In addition to basic research, his applied research focuses on creating broader impacts on people, health, the environment, and renewable energy harvesting. He has edited multiple books, Material Research Society (MRS) proceedings volumes, and journal special issues. Dr. Yap is the founder of a new international symposia series for MRS. Since 2007, his organization team, with colleagues in the U.S.A, Asia, and Europe, has organized symposia for MRS Fall meetings in every alternative year (2007, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022..).
