Fertilization is a key management practice for maintaining or improving soil fertility and ensuring grain yield in agro-ecosystems. Nevertheless, as a low-yield soil, how fertilization strategies impact the status of albic soil physical and chemical properties, biological activity, and crop yield are poorly understood. Through a two-year positioning experiment, the albic soil fertility characteristics (physical, chemical, and biological) and changes in maize yield under different fertilization were studied. Three treatments were established: (1) conventional fertilization (chemical fertilizer) (T1), (2) optimized fertilization 1 (low amount of organic fertilizer + chemical fertilizer) (T2), and (3) optimized fertilization 2 (high amount of organic fertilizer + chemical fertilizer) (T3). The results indicated that, compared with T1, the soil bulk density of T2 and T3 treatments decreased, the average solid phase ratio of soil decreased by 8.2%, and the average liquid and gas phase ratios increased by 7.2% and 10.2%, respectively. The soil organic matter (SOM) and soil organic carbon storage (SOCS) under treatment of optimized fertilization were significantly higher than under T1, with an average increase of 10.1% for SOM and 8.8% for SOCS, respectively. T3 significantly increased the contents of alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen, available phosphorus, and available potassium, while different fertilizations had little effect on soil pH. T2 and T3 significantly increased activities of soil urease, sucrase, phosphatase, and catalase, with an average increase of 33.7%, 56.9%, 32.0%, and 6.7%, respectively. The numbers of soil bacteria and actinomycetes under T3 increased significantly by 30.2% and 22.0% compared to T1, while the number of fungi decreased by 6.7%. The total number of soil microorganisms increased significantly by 29.0% of T3, and the proportion of soil bacteria to the total number of microorganisms increased, while the proportion of fungi and actinomycetes decreased. The maize yield of T3 was significantly higher than under other treatments, with an increase of 2368.5 kg/ha compared to T1. Correlation analysis showed that the contents of available nutrients and organic matter, the numbers of soil bacteria and actinomycetes, and the activities of soil urease and phosphatase had the most significant impact on maize yield. The optimized fertilization, which was the organic fertilizer combined with chemical fertilizer, can improve the physical properties of albic soil, increase soil organic matter content, organic carbon storage, available nutrient content, and soil biological activity, also for maize yield. Therefore, the optimized fertilization in albic soil of Northeast China is a promising and important management option for improved soil quality and grain yield. This work provides a theoretical basis and technical reference for efficient fertilization.

Replacing partial chemical fertilizers with organic fertilizer can increase organic carbon input, change soil nutrient stoichiometry and microbial metabolism, and then affect soil organic carbon (SOC) storage. A 6-year field experiment was used to explore the mechanism of SOC storage under different ratios of manure substitution in northeast China, with treatments including chemical fertilizer application alone (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, NPK) and replacing 1/4 (1/4M), 2/4 (2/4M), 3/4 (3/4M), and 4/4 (4/4M) of chemical fertilizer N with manure N. Soil nutrients, enzymatic activity, and SOC fractions were analyzed to evaluate the effect of different manure substitution ratios on SOC storage. A high ratio of manure substitution (>1/4) significantly increased soil total N, total P, total K, and available nutrients (NO3−-N, available P, and available K), and the 4/4M greatly decreased the C/N ratio compared to the NPK. Manure incorporation increased microbial biomass carbon (MBC) by 18.3–53.0%. Treatments with 50%, 75%, and 100% manure substitution (2/4M, 3/4M, and 4/4M) enhanced bacterial necromass carbon (BNC), fungal necromass carbon (FNC), and total microbial necromass carbon (MNC) by 31.9–63.5%, 25.5–107.1%, and 27.4–94.2%, respectively, compared to the NPK treatment. Notably, the increase in FNC was greater than that of BNC as the manure substitution ratio increased. The increasing manure substitution significantly enhanced particulate organic C (POC) and total SOC but did not affect mineral-associated organic C (MAOC). High soil N and P supplies decreased leucine aminopeptidases (LAPs) and alkaline phosphatase activities but increased the activity ratio of β-glucosidase (BG)/(N-acetyl-glucosaminidase (NAG) + LAP). Treatments with 25% manure substitution (1/4M) maintained maize and soybean yield, but with increasing manure rate, the maize yield decreased gradually. Overall, the high ratio of manure substitution enhanced SOC storage via increasing POC and MNC, and decreasing the decomposition potential of manure C and soil C resulting from low N- and P-requiring enzyme activities under high nutrient supplies. This study provides empirical evidence that the rational substitution of chemical fertilizers with manure is an effective measure to improve the availability of nutrients, and its effect on increasing crop yields still needs to be continuously observed, which is still a beneficial choice for enhancing black soil fertility.

To reveal the changes in crop yield and contribution rate of black soil productivity under long-term different fertilization conditions in black soil areas and to find the important significance of fertilization for sustainable and stable crop yield, high yield, and improving the contribution rate of black soil nutrients. Based on the long-term experiment of black soil fertility in Harbin, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, under the maize–wheat–soybean rotation system, crop yield, sustainability and stability of yield, the contribution rate of black soil productivity, and natural nutrient supply capacity under 10 fertilization treatments (CK, NP, NK, PK, NPK, M, MNP, MNK, MPK, and MNPK) were analyzed. Results showed that, compared with the treatment of chemical fertilizer, yields of maize, wheat, and soybeans increased under treatment of organic fertilizer combined with chemical fertilizer, among which the yields of maize and wheat changed the most. As the rotation period lengthened, the sustainable yield index (SYI) values of chemical fertilizer treatment and its combination with organic fertilizer treatment gradually decreased. During the rotation period, the SYI value follows: chemical fertilizer combined with organic fertilizer > chemical fertilizer > organic fertilizer. The coefficient of variation (CV) of yield stability showed an overall trend of increasing first and then decreasing, with individual treatments showing a gradual increasing trend (NP and NPK; MNP and MNPK). Under different rotation periods, the overall contribution rate of soil productivity of long-term organic fertilizer combined with chemical fertilizer treatment was higher than that of single chemical fertilizer treatment. With the extension of the rotation period, the contribution rate of soil productivity of NPK treatment was higher and slightly increased, while other treatments showed a downward trend. Although the contribution rate of soil productivity of organic–inorganic fertilizer combined treatment (MNP and MNK) showed a downward trend, it still remained at a high level (97.2% and 95.9%). In addition, the black soil has strong phosphorus and potassium supply capacity; nitrogen was lower than those two elements, with an average natural potassium supply capacity of 94.0–97.1%. Therefore, the combination of organic and inorganic fertilizers is one of the most effective fertilization measures to stabilize crop yield in the black soil region. Nitrogen fertilizer, as a limiting factor for crop growth in the black soil region, should be emphasized in its application.

Under the condition of straw returning to the field, appropriate nitrogen fertilizer application is one of the key factors used to improve crop yield and ensure environmental safety. Therefore, an experiment with different rates of nitrogen fertilization was conducted with a randomized block design in Harbin, China. The straw was deeply plowed back into the field after harvest in the autumn. The nitrogen application rates were 0, 75, 150, 180, 225, and 300 kg·ha−1. The purpose of this study is to clarify the appropriate amount of nitrogen fertilizer under the condition of straw returning to the field and to provide technical support for high-yield and high-efficiency maize in cold regions. The results indicated that the yield of maize first increased and then stabilized as the amount of nitrogen fertilizer increased, while the economic benefits first increased and then decreased. When the nitrogen application rate exceeds 225 kg·ha−1 or is lower than 150 kg·ha−1, the economic benefits significantly decrease. When high-nitrogen fertilizer rates of 225 kg·ha−1 and 300 kg·ha−1 were applied, the residual nitrate nitrogen in the soil was increased by 2.1 times and 2.3 times, respectively, compared to before sowing. With the increase in the nitrogen application rate, the nitrogen fertilizer utilization efficiency and agronomic efficiency decreased, and the apparent nitrogen loss and nitrogen surplus significantly increased. Comprehensively considering the maize yield, benefits, and environmental risk factors the suitable nitrogen application rate was in a range of 170.2 kg·ha−1 to 178.2 kg·ha−1 in the first year and 150.0 kg·ha−1 to 171.3 kg·ha−1 in the second year. This work provides a theoretical basis and technical support for the rational application of nitrogen fertilizer and high-yield and high-efficiency spring maize under the condition of straw returning to the field.

This study used a 3-year field experiment to evaluate the effects of controlled-release nitrogen fertilizers (CRNFs) on rice yield, nitrogen (N) uptake, N recovery efficiency (NRE), N agronomic efficiency (NAE), N partial factor productivity (NPFP), and soil nutrients under straw-returning (SR) conditions in the black soil region of Northeast China. The results showed that CRNF combined with SR increased rice yield, NRE, NAE, and NPFP by 11.2%, 27.7%, 26.1%, and 22.3% respectively; the differences were significant when compared with common N fertilizer (CNF) combined with SR. In addition, CRNF increased soil organic matter (SOM), total N (TN), available N (AN), and other nutrients while reducing nitrate N (NO3−-N) accumulation in the 30–60 cm soil layer. When the N application rate was reduced by 12%, rice yield still increased by 4.7%, and NRE, NAE, and NPFP increased by 17.2%, 32.9%, and 11.7% respectively; the differences were significant, and the content of soil nutrients has increased to varying degrees. These results indicate that a one-time basal application of controlled-release urea (CRU) mixed with bare urea (BU) at a 6:4 ratio can maintain stable yields, improve fertilization efficiency, reduce N fertilizer input, and lower environmental risks. Therefore, this approach represents an effective strategy for sustainable fertilization in rice-growing areas of Northeast China.

Albic soil is a typical low-yield and problematic soil in Northeast China, which severely restricts crop growth and yield. Through a three-year field experiment in the albic soil of China, soil three-phase ratio, soil bulk density (soil BD), soil total porosity (soil TP), size distribution and water stability of soil aggregates, and changes in maize yield under crop rotations were studied. The following three treatments were established: conventional fertilization (T0), conventional fertilization + soil amendment (T1), and conventional fertilization + soil amendment + bio-organic fertilizer (T2). The results indicated that, compared with T0, the soil three-phase ratio deviation value (R) of T1 and T2 decreased by 23.69–74.94%, and the generalized soil structure index (GSSI) increased by 4.75–15.41% in soil layers of 0–20 cm and 20–40 cm. Soil BD and soil TP changed significantly in the soil layer of 20–40 cm under treatment of T2 (decreased 12.82% and increased 18.31%, respectively). Content of aggregates >0.25 mm (R0.25) increased significantly in the soil layer of 0–20 cm, with increases of 13.71% and 23.21% under treatments of T1 and T2. The mean weight diameter (MWD) and geometric mean diameter (GMD) increased significantly under treatment of T2. Compared with T0, maize yield increased 13.45% and 18.85% under treatments of T1 and T2. Correlation analysis showed that maize yield was significantly correlated with soil physical indexes and aggregate stability. In summary, the combined application of soil amendments and bio-organic fertilizer is not only important for albic soil improvement, but also crucial to stabilize the crop production capacity in albic soil regions.
