The objective of the present work is to improve the output waveform of three level inverters used in high-power applications, where the switching frequency is very low. This is achieved by maintaining the synchronization, half-wave symmetry, quarter-wave symmetry, and three-phase symmetry in the pulsewidth modulation (PWM) waveforms. The principles of achieving synchronization and symmetries in terms of space vectors for three level inverters are presented. A novel synchronized space vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM) algorithms is proposed and verified experimentally. The experimental waveforms of the inverter output voltage and motor no load current for different operating conditions of the drive are presented. The performance measure in terms of the weighted total harmonic distortion (THD) of the line voltage is computed for the linear modulation region of the drive for the proposed algorithm and compared with that of synchronized SVPWM and synchronized sine-triangle pulsewidth modulation (SPWM) technique. The comparative results show that consideration of synchronization and symmetry results in improved THD. Another significant feature of the proposed algorithm is that the symmetry and synchronization leads to self-balancing of the direct current (dc) bus capacitor voltages over every one third cycle of the fundamental

High voltage gain DC-DC converter is a prime requirement for renewable applications, in particular for PV. Though numerous DC-DC converter is available for increasing the voltage gain, the passive elements requirement is higher which reduces the compactness, consequently, increases the cost of the system. To address this issue, a high gain DC-DC converter is reported recently. However, the number of passive elements is quite high which increases the size. To reduce the number of passive elements and maintain the same number of semiconductor devices, in this paper, a new switched inductor arrangement is proposed which is named as switched inductor double switch DC-DC converter (SL-DS-DC). Moreover, the proposed converter has a higher gain as compared to the recently reported converter. The proposed converter is analyzed in steady state and a comparative analysis is presented to prove the suitability. Finally, the proposed converter is validated experimentally.

The high-power voltage source inverters are switched at low frequency to reduce the losses in the inverter. The discontinuous pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) sequences reduce the switching frequency to two-thirds compared to the conventional continuous PWM sequences. At low switching frequency, the output will be rich in harmonics, and synchronization is a must to avoid subharmonics. This paper presents four basic types of synchronized discontinuous PWM (DPWM) sequences that ensure synchronization, three-phase symmetry, and half-wave symmetry. The proposed synchronized DPWM sequences are verified through simulation and experiment on a constant- v/f open-loop induction motor drive. The performance of the proposed DPWM algorithms is studied in the entire modulation region, including the overmodulation region, and is compared with that of the conventional synchronized space vector PWM. A different type of DPWM with low common-mode voltage is suggested for low-modulation region and verified experimentally.

This article presents a new open-end winding induction motor (OEWIM)-based dual-motor differential four-wheel drive (D4WD) for the electric vehicle (EV). Constant speed operation through cruise control is achieved using direct torque control (DTC) algorithm. The redundant vectors are used in the switching vector selection of the DTC algorithm to achieve balanced battery currents. Fault-tolerant operation (FTO) of the drive is demonstrated, where the EV will work with full torque even if one of the inverters in rear motor drive or front motor drive or both fail. The dynamic model of the proposed drive is presented. The proposed drive and FTO are verified through simulation as per the FTP-75 driving cycle. An experimental prototype of the proposed drive is developed, and the abovementioned algorithms are verified experimentally as per the FTP-75 and HFET driving cycles. Both the simulation and experimental results are presented, and these results agree with the theoretical observations. Stable operation of EV for the entire test cycle under normal operation, as well as inverter fault conditions, is demonstrated.

For high-power electric vehicles (EVs), the drive propulsion based on induction motors is emerging as economical alternative. Compared to conventional induction motors, the open-end winding induction motor (OEWIM) requires only half the dc-bus voltage for the given torque. The EV power train based on the dual two-level voltage-source inverter (VSI)-fed OEWIM with isolated dc sources is used in this research. For uniform state-of-charge (SoC) distribution, the power flow from each isolated source needs to be controlled. A two-stage model-predictive direct torque control (MPDTC) scheme is proposed to balance the SoC of batteries by proper selection of the VSI voltage vectors. The proposed MPDTC scheme is free from weighting factor tuning and uses a ranking method to predict the optimal voltage vectors. The superiority of the proposed controller in terms of battery SoC balancing is demonstrated. The performance of the proposed MPDTC EV drive is verified for the FTP75 and HFET driving cycles under different operating conditions, both by simulation and hardware experimental tests.

The power electronic converter and its control system form an integral part of distributed generation (DG) systems interfacing renewable energy sources to the utility network. This paper proposes an adaptive notch filter-based multipurpose control scheme for grid interfacing DG inverter under corrupted grid conditions. The proposed control scheme uses a frequency adaptive sequence components extractor which is capable of extracting instantaneous symmetrical components and harmonic components of three-phase signals. The DG inverter in this study consists of three single-phase voltage source inverters with common dc bus and coupled to utility grid via three singlephase transformers. The proposed control scheme enables the DG inverter to perform multiple tasks such as: reference power injection to grid, low voltage ride through, load reactive power support and compensation of harmonic, unbalanced and neutral currents. The efficacy of the proposed control scheme is evaluated through MATLAB/Simulink simulations and experimentally verified using a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL)-based system.
