Dr. Corene Matyas is a Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Florida. Corene received a BS in Environmental Geosciences and minor in Sculpture at Clarion University of Pennsylvania, MA in Geography from Arizona State University, and PhD in Geography from Pennsylvania State University. Corene's primary research measures the spatial patterns of the rain fields of tropical cyclones, which has been funded through grants from the National Science Foundation. Corene has also partnered with social scientists to study hurricane evacuation intentions of Florida tourists and the association between rainfall and well-being of rural subsistence farmers in Mozambique. Corene teaches courses in Climatology, Hurricanes, Atmospheric Teleconnections, and Atmospheric Data Analysis. Teaching honors include Teacher of the Year Awards from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 2009 and 2019, and the Excellence in Teaching award from the Southeastern Division of the American Association of Geographers in 2019.
