This article describes air-and-water spraying systems, designed at the KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology, used in longwall shearers, in roadheaders, at transfer points of conveyors and in roadways. The simple and lightweight design of roadway spraying systems ensures that the solutions can be used anywhere that dust occurs in the air. The spraying systems form an integral part of longwall shearers, and their function is to reduce airborne dust levels and to prevent methane explosion. The use of air-and-water spraying systems can reduce dust concentration by up to 80% and they contribute to a significant reduction of dust concentration in the air. Some results of tests concerning the effectiveness of air-and-water spraying devices are presented, verification tests of the author’s solutions for spraying nozzles are also discussed.
The transformation of the energy sector towards an increased share of renewable energy sources in the energy mix requires attention in the area of electricity storage. Renewable energy sources (photovoltaics or wind energy) are marked by the intermittency of electricity production and require the construction of energy storage to adapt the energy supply to the demand, providing greater stability. The authors focused on verifying the solution of gravitational energy storage in existing shafts of hard coal mines in Poland. The issue is significant for Poland, as a country with an extensive mining infrastructure, which is searching for new scientific and practical solutions to utilize disused mining shafts for new purposes. In the analysis, the focus was on one shaft located within the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (Górnośląskie Zagłębie Węglowe), maintained for the drainage of the neighboring deposit. The article presents the calculation of energy that can be stored and an analysis of the effectiveness of energy storage in the shaft. The basic assumption of the analysis was 1 cycle of work per day (charging and discharging) in order to use the effect of low prices at night and high prices during peak hours (according to Towarowa Giełda Energii (TGE) quotations). Although energy storage already functions around the world, the studied case is new, because it refers to the usage of existing shafts which makes it a non-investment case. The results of the study showed that the obtained economic effects of the analyzed solution are low, therefore there is no economic justification of activities related to its implementation, taking into account the current price conditions.
The primary producers and processes of matter and energy flow, reflected by the soil enzyme activity, are the basics of all ecosystem functioning processes. This paper reviews the relationships between the plant diversity, the physicochemical substrate parameters, and the soil enzymatic activity in novel ecosystems of the urban–industrial landscape, where the factors driving soil enzyme activity are not fully understood and still need to be studied. The relationship between the biotic and abiotic factors in the development of novel ecosystems on de novo established habitats, e.g., sites of post-mineral excavation, are shaped in ways unknown from the natural and the semi-natural habitats. The main criteria of de novo established ecosystems are the vegetation patches of the non-analogous species composition created as a result of human impact. The non-analogous species assemblages are associated with different microorganism communities because the biomass and the biochemistry of soil organic matter influence the enzyme activity of soil substrates. Moreover, the soil enzyme activity is an indicator that can dynamically reflect the changes in the microbial community structure dependent on the best-adapted plant species, thanks to the particular traits and individual adaptive adjustments of all the plant species present. This way, soil enzyme activity reflects the sum and the interactions of the elements of the ecosystem structure, irrespective of the vegetation history and the habitat origin.
The deepening of a mine shaft is a difficult and dangerous operation. Moreover, it requires the continuous operation of the shaft during the process of deepening. Because of this, it is necessary to leave the plug on the shaft bottom or install an artificial shaft bottom. The main task of an artificial shaft bottom is to provide safety from falling objects for the employees working on the shaft bottom. Many solutions for shaft safety platforms have been used in Polish mines over the years. A new construction of the artificial shaft bottom consists of using layers of highly durable net. It allows a reduction in the construction weight as well as the installation time. This article presents a new construction of an artificial shaft bottom and the simulations and calculations that confirm the possibility of its application to mine shafts during their deepening.
