Detecting litchis in a complex natural environment is important for yield estimation and provides reliable support to litchi-picking robots. This paper proposes an improved litchi detection model named YOLOv5-litchi for litchi detection in complex natural environments. First, we add a convolutional block attention module to each C3 module in the backbone of the network to enhance the ability of the network to extract important feature information. Second, we add a small-object detection layer to enable the model to locate smaller targets and enhance the detection performance of small targets. Third, the Mosaic-9 data augmentation in the network increases the diversity of datasets. Then, we accelerate the regression convergence process of the prediction box by replacing the target detection regression loss function with CIoU. Finally, we add weighted-boxes fusion to bring the prediction boxes closer to the target and reduce the missed detection. An experiment is carried out to verify the effectiveness of the improvement. The results of the study show that the mAP and recall of the YOLOv5-litchi model were improved by 12.9% and 15%, respectively, in comparison with those of the unimproved YOLOv5 network. The inference speed of the YOLOv5-litchi model to detect each picture is 25 ms, which is much better than that of Faster-RCNN and YOLOv4. Compared with the unimproved YOLOv5 network, the mAP of the YOLOv5-litchi model increased by 17.4% in the large visual scenes. The performance of the YOLOv5-litchi model for litchi detection is the best in five models. Therefore, YOLOv5-litchi achieved a good balance between speed, model size, and accuracy, which can meet the needs of litchi detection in agriculture and provides technical support for the yield estimation and litchi-picking robots.

In order to create an irrigation scheduling plan for use in large-area citrus orchards, an environmental information collection system of citrus orchards was established based on the Internet of Things (IoT). With the environmental information data, deep bidirectional long short-term memory (Bid-LSTM) networks are proposed to improve soil moisture (SM) and soil electrical conductivity (SEC) predictions, providing a meaningful reference for the irrigation and fertilization of citrus orchards. The IoT system contains SM, SEC, air temperature and humidity, wind speed, and precipitation sensors, while the mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), and coefficient of determination (R2) were calculated to evaluate the performance of the models. The performance of the deep Bid-LSTM model was compared with a multi-layer neural network (MLNN). The results for the performance criteria reveal that the proposed deep Bid-LSTM networks perform better than the MLNN model, according to many of the evaluation indicators of this study.

Controlling and extinguishing spreading forest fires is a challenging task that often leads to irreversible losses. Moreover, large-scale forest fires generate smoke and dust, causing environmental pollution and posing potential threats to human life. In this study, we introduce a modified deep convolutional neural network model (MDCNN) designed for the recognition and localization of fire in video imagery, employing a deep learning-based recognition approach. We apply transfer learning to refine the model and adapt it for the specific task of fire image recognition. To combat the issue of imprecise detection of flame characteristics, which are prone to misidentification, we integrate a deep CNN with an original feature fusion algorithm. We compile a diverse set of fire and non-fire scenarios to construct a training dataset of flame images, which is then employed to calibrate the model for enhanced flame detection accuracy. The proposed MDCNN model demonstrates a low false alarm rate of 0.563%, a false positive rate of 12.7%, a false negative rate of 5.3%, and a recall rate of 95.4%, and achieves an overall accuracy of 95.8%. The experimental results demonstrate that this method significantly improves the accuracy of flame recognition. The achieved recognition results indicate the model’s strong generalization ability.

Monitoring and early warning technology for forest fires is crucial. An early warning/monitoring system for forest fires was constructed based on deep learning and the internet of things. Forest fire recognition was improved by combining the size, color, and shape characteristics of the flame, smoke, and area. Complex upper-layer fire-image features were extracted, improving the input conversion by building a forest fire risk prediction model based on an improved dynamic convolutional neural network. The proposed back propagation neural network fire (BPNNFire) algorithm calculated the image processing speed and delay rate, and data were preprocessed to remove noise. The model recognized forest fire images, and the classifier classified them to distinguish images with and without fire. Fire images were classified locally for feature extraction. Forest fire images were stored on a remote server. Existing algorithms were compared, and BPNNFire provided real-time accurate forest fire recognition at a low frame rate with 84.37% accuracy, indicating superior recognition. The maximum relative error between the measured and actual values for real-time online monitoring of forest environment indicators, such as air temperature and humidity, was 5.75%. The packet loss rate of the forest fire monitoring network was 5.99% at Longshan Forest Farm and 2.22% at Longyandong Forest Farm.

The relative content of chlorophyll, assessed through the soil and plant analyzer development (SPAD), serves as a reliable indicator reflecting crop photosynthesis and the nutritional status during crop growth and development. In this study, we employed machine learning methods utilizing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) multi-spectrum remote sensing to predict the SPAD value of litchi fruit. Input features consisted of various vegetation indices and texture features during distinct growth periods, and to streamline the feature set, the full subset regression algorithm was applied for dimensionality reduction. Our findings revealed the superiority of stacking models over individual models. During the litchi fruit development period, the stacking model, incorporating vegetation indices and texture features, demonstrated a validation set coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.94, a root mean square error (RMSE) of 2.4, and a relative percent deviation (RPD) of 3.0. Similarly, in the combined litchi growing period and autumn shoot period, the optimal model for estimating litchi SPAD was the stacking model based on vegetation indices and texture features, yielding a validation set R2, RMSE, and RPD of 0.84, 3.9, and 1.9, respectively. This study furnishes data support for the precise estimation of litchi SPAD across different periods through varied combinations of independent variables.
