Skin cancer is one of the most dangerous forms of cancer. Skin cancer is caused by un-repaired deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in skin cells, which generate genetic defects or mutations on the skin. Skin cancer tends to gradually spread over other body parts, so it is more curable in initial stages, which is why it is best detected at early stages. The increasing rate of skin cancer cases, high mortality rate, and expensive medical treatment require that its symptoms be diagnosed early. Considering the seriousness of these issues, researchers have developed various early detection techniques for skin cancer. Lesion parameters such as symmetry, color, size, shape, etc. are used to detect skin cancer and to distinguish benign skin cancer from melanoma. This paper presents a detailed systematic review of deep learning techniques for the early detection of skin cancer. Research papers published in well-reputed journals, relevant to the topic of skin cancer diagnosis, were analyzed. Research findings are presented in tools, graphs, tables, techniques, and frameworks for better understanding.

With the advancement in technology, machine learning can be applied to diagnose the mass/tumor in the brain using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This work proposes a novel developed transfer deep-learning model for the early diagnosis of brain tumors into their subclasses, such as pituitary, meningioma, and glioma. First, various layers of isolated convolutional-neural-network (CNN) models are built from scratch to check their performances for brain MRI images. Then, the 22-layer, binary-classification (tumor or no tumor) isolated-CNN model is re-utilized to re-adjust the neurons’ weights for classifying brain MRI images into tumor subclasses using the transfer-learning concept. As a result, the developed transfer-learned model has a high accuracy of 95.75% for the MRI images of the same MRI machine. Furthermore, the developed transfer-learned model has also been tested using the brain MRI images of another machine to validate its adaptability, general capability, and reliability for real-time application in the future. The results showed that the proposed model has a high accuracy of 96.89% for an unseen brain MRI dataset. Thus, the proposed deep-learning framework can help doctors and radiologists diagnose brain tumors early.

Neurological and brain-related cancers are one of the main causes of death worldwide. A commonly used tool in diagnosing these conditions is Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), yet the manual evaluation of MRI images by medical experts presents difficulties due to time constraints and variability. This research introduces a novel, two-module computerized method aimed at increasing the speed and accuracy of brain tumor detection. The first module, termed the Image Enhancement Technique, utilizes a trio of machine learning and imaging strategies—adaptive Wiener filtering, neural networks, and independent component analysis—to normalize images and combat issues such as noise and varying low region contrast. The second module uses Support Vector Machines to validate the output of the first module and perform tumor segmentation and classification. Applied to various types of brain tumors, including meningiomas and pituitary tumors, our method exhibited significant improvements in contrast and classification efficiency. It achieved an average sensitivity and specificity of 0.991, accuracy of 0.989, and a Dice score (DSC) of 0.981. Furthermore, the processing time of our method, averaging at 0.43 seconds, was markedly lower compared to existing methods. These results underscore the superior performance of our approach over current state-of-the-art methods in terms of sensitivity, specificity, precision, and DSC. Future enhancements will seek to increase the robustness of the tumor classification method by employing a standardized approach across a suite of classifiers.

Nowadays, condition-based maintenance (CBM) and fault diagnosis (FD) of rotating machinery (RM) has a vital role in the modern industrial world. However, the remaining useful life (RUL) of machinery is crucial for continuous monitoring and timely maintenance. Moreover, reduced maintenance costs, enhanced safety, efficiency, reliability, and availability are the main important industrial issues to maintain valuable and high-cost machinery. Undoubtedly, induction motor (IM) is considered to be a pivotal component in industrial machines. Recently, acoustic emission (AE) becomes a very accurate and efficient method for fault, leaks and fatigue detection and monitoring techniques. Moreover, CM and FD based on the AE of IM have been growing over recent years. The proposed research study aims to review condition monitoring (CM) and fault diagnosis (FD) studies based on sound and AE for four types of faults: bearings, rotor, stator, and compound. The study also points out the advantages and limitations of using sound and AE analysis in CM and FD. Existing public datasets for AE based analysis for CM and FD of IM are also mentioned. Finally, challenges facing AE based CM and FD for RM, especially for IM, and possible future works are addressed in this study.

The fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) along with condition monitoring (CM) and of rotating machinery (RM) have critical importance for early diagnosis to prevent severe damage of infrastructure in industrial environments. Importantly, valuable industrial equipment needs continuous monitoring to enhance the safety, reliability, and availability and to decrease the cost of maintenance of modern industrial systems and applications. However, induction motor (IM) has been extensively used in several industrial processes because it is cheap, reliable, and robust. Rolling bearings are considered to be the main component of IM. Undoubtedly, any failure of this basic component can lead to a serious breakdown of IM and for whole industrial system. Thus, many current methods based on different techniques are employed as a fault prognosis and diagnosis of rolling elements bearing of IM. Moreover, these techniques include signal/image processing, intelligent diagnostics, data fusion, data mining, and expert systems for time and frequency as well as time-frequency domains. Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have proven their significance in every field of digital technology. Industrial machines, automation, and processes are the net frontiers of AI adaptation. There are quite developed literatures that have been approaching the issues using signals and data processing techniques. However, the key contribution of this work is to present an extensive review of CM and FDD of the IM, especially for rolling elements bearings, based on artificial intelligent (AI) methods. This study highlights the advantages and performance limitations of each method. Finally, challenges and future trends are also highlighted.
