This study aimed to explore the case study of Brno city regarding smart city models. We analyzed Brno considering smart and sustainable city elements, i.e., smart mobility/public transport, smart technology, smart people, smart governance, smart economy, smart living, and smart environment based on transport, energy, and environment referred herein as the smart city and sustainability model. Therefore, we investigated a case study of Brno city in the Czech Republic. We used qualitative techniques such as case study, exploration, observation, and description. We analyzed and comprehended the trends in the various features of smart city and sustainable development of the city of Brno. The findings showed that Brno city is doing its best to maintain smart city models through its governance organs and structures. The city is also working hard to improve some of the aspects that are still lagging. The ongoing developments and the future ones are based on strategic planning for both the short term and long term such as Brno2023, Brno2030, and Brno2050. It was found that Brno has a very well-planned transport system and is integrated with other aspects such as technology, energy, such as the electricity that moves the trolleybuses and trams, and environment. We strongly conclude that even though Brno city still struggles to achieve total sustainability, it is still a model and reflection of a smart and sustainable city. Finally, we noted that Brno city has very good plans and vision the “DNA” of a smart city. However, the implementation still suffers political willingness.

The current crisis of worldwide agglomeration and economic, spatial, and ownership factors, among others, mean that there is usually a shortage of new green areas, which are socially very beneficial. Therefore, various brownfields or degraded lands along public transport routes, e.g., tram lanes, are effectively transformed for this purpose. The significant potential of tram systems is that they can became a backbone of green corridors across the city. This case study of the Warsaw tram system (total length over 300 km of single tracks in service in 2019) enables us to simulate the potential growth of a biologically active area connected with an increasing share of greenery around tram lanes in Warsaw. Experience allows the authors to present the types of greenery systems based on existing and future tram corridors best suited for this city. The suggested usage of tram lanes as green corridors is in line with the generally-accepted concept of urban green infrastructure. Therefore, the aim of the authors is to present in a condensed fashion their views on a very important issue within the program of the revitalization of the Warsaw landscape by converting where possible the existing tram lines, as well as planning new ones according to the “green point of view”.

Historical parks, as an inseparable element of manors and landowners’ palaces, constitute a valuable cultural heritage, commemorating the times of the Polish nobility. From among the 16,000 manor houses existing before 1939, only 3433 objects remained, including 1965 of them are residential parks without the dominant feature in the form of a building. Numerous studies and activities are carried out to protect, restore, maintain and adapt these facilities to current needs. They are general, often theoretical, or individual concern objects, or only mansions or palaces, excluding parks, which makes it difficult to assess the problem objectively. The aim of this study is a comprehensive assessment of the distribution (in terms of spatial, social and administrative terms), the state of preservation (in terms of area size, technical, phytosanitary and original composition) and the use of the potential of historical parks in manor or palace complexes. The authors examined the distribution of these objects using relative indicators and descriptive statistics. The economic potential of the parks was explored in comparison to the facilities based on their sale offers, using the analysis of variance and the Tukey test. The results show the detailed distribution, state of preservation and problems related to the current and potential use of post-manor parks, manor and palace parks in 16 voivodeships of the country.

The article covers the issue of land reclamation of two degraded urban areas: Silesia Park (Chorzów city, Southern Poland) and Górka Rogowska Park (Łódź city, Central Poland). The research raises the subject of vegetation condition, plant succession, and the usage of a given area in terms of recreational functions. The first example of Silesia Park (case study 1) indicates a successful nature and landscape reclamation. The intention of park’s designers was to create a permanent and self-regulating natural system in accordance with the principle that the wider the area of the park and the longer it exists, the more it is ecologically sustainable and the more it affects its surroundings. The second example of Górka Rogowska Park (case study 2) shows that despite numerous sensible design ideas for satisfactory development, the area has not been properly reclaimed. In this location, the conducted works have degraded landscape values and recreational opportunities. Nevertheless, the research showed that this park is an area with high natural potential, and with properly designed decisions and contribution of city’ authorities might become a popular year-round and multi-functional public space offering a various range of recreational activities similar to the Silesia Park. The research led to the conclusion that constant monitoring is necessary to counteract the negative effects of the anthropopression through appropriate care (plant control, elimination of invasive plants) and design (rational development of leisure activities of a given place) decisions on reclaimed urban areas.

W okresie od września 2015 r. do marca 2016 r. wykonano analizy terenowo-studialne w celu określenia wartości przyrodniczo-krajobrazowych miejsca [Fortuna-Antoszkiewicz i in. 2016]. XX w. - rzędów i pasów topól różnych taksonów (część w stadium senilnym), m.in.: Populus ‘NE 49’, Populus xcanadensis Moench ‘Marilandica’, Populus nigra L. ’Italica’, Populus simonii Carrière ‘Fastigiata’.

Although the research on the defense mechanisms of trees was carried out in the 1930s, it was not until the mid-1980s that – under the influence of Alex Shigo – an arborist movement began, which was based on understanding defense mechanisms, growth physiology and development of trees. A...

One of the basic conditions for the sustainable development of a modern city is the presence of a developed and efficiently functioning system of green infrastructure. It consists of all natural resources: greenery areas (gardens, parks, squares, street shelters, green roofs, etc.) and spontaneous (urban forests, green wastelands, etc.), water (watercourses and water reservoirs). Taking into account the specific, usually unfavorable conditions of the urban environment and the strong anthropopressure occurring there, all forms of vegetation should be subject to comprehensive management, including among others, the successful development of new facilities and plantings, as well as protection with the constant control and maintenance of existing valuable resources [2]. The long-term studies of the condition and transformations of urban tree stands [1, 3, 4, 5, 6] conducted by the authors allow the formulation of a set of recommendations at the implementation level to ensure the efficient functioning of the green infrastructure in the city.

The authors of this article propose that organic architecture is based on a broadly understood prediction of the impact a constructed building will have on the condition of adjacent trees. One of the key issues is deciding if a tree may be left near a constructed facility based on an assessment of the impact the structure will have on tree health and its survival chances. This article presents selected aspects of predicting collisions of buildings with trees based on tree growth prediction. This material presents a case study: predicting the collision of Betula pendula and Tilia cordata with a building development, erected closer than 2.5 m from their tree trunks.
