The objective of this study is to characterize Latent Classes emerging from the analysis of the level of digital competences, use and consumption of applications and/or services through the Internet. For this purpose, the results of the survey Basic Digital Competences (Competencias Básicas Digitales-COBADI®) applied to university students, with more than 60 categorical variables, were considered. A total of 4762 undergraduate and graduate students from five Spanish universities participated in this survey: Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), Pablo de Olavide University (UPO), Almeria University (UAL), National University of Distance Education (UNED) and Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC). The application of the questionnaire was done through the Internet, from the Institute for Research in Social Sciences and Education of University of Atacama—Chile. The methodology used is mixed, because the questions of the questionnaire provide qualitative information that can be interpreted and elaborated from the results. It is also quantitative because basic statistical techniques are used for the exploratory analysis of the data, and later Latent Class Analysis (LCA), to complement the description of the data set and the variables considered in the study, thus allowing us to group the classes of variables that do not appear explicitly in the set of observed variables, but which nevertheless affect them. The results of the study show that regardless of the gender and age range of the participants, there are four clearly differentiated groups or classes in the use and consumption of ICTs in different ways for their activities, both personal and academic, which allows for identifying different developments of digital competences. This study allows establishing a baseline in order to be able to elaborate later, in the development of the digital competences currently needed, which should be developed by university students.

The scope of blockchain technology, initially associated with the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, is greater due to the multiple applications in various disciplines. Its use in accounting lies mainly in the fact that it reduces risks and the eventuality of fraud, eliminates human error, promotes efficiency, and increases transparency and reliability. This means that different economic sectors assume it as a recording and management instrument. The aim is to examine current and emerging research lines at a global level on blockchain technology for secure accounting management. The evolution of the publication of the number of articles between 2016 and 2020 was analyzed. Statistical and mathematical techniques were applied to a sample of 1130 records from the Scopus database. The data uncovered a polynomial trend in this period. The seven main lines of work were identified: blockchain, network security, information management, digital storage, edge computing, commerce, and the Internet of Things. The ten most outstanding emerging research lines are detected. This study provides the past and future thematic axes on this incipient field of knowledge, which is a tool for decision-making by academics, researchers, and directors of research investment programs.

The objective of this article is to analyze the didactic functionality of a chatbot to improve the results of the students of the National University of Distance Education (UNED / Spain) in accessing the university in the subject of Spanish Language. For this, a quasi-experimental experiment was designed, and a quantitative methodology was used through pretest and posttest in a control and experimental group in which the effectiveness of two teaching models was compared, one more traditional based on exercises written on paper and another based on interaction with a chatbot. Subsequently, the perception of the experimental group in an academic forum about the educational use of the chatbot was analyzed through text mining with tests of Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), pairwise distance matrix and bigrams. The quantitative results showed that the students in the experimental group substantially improved the results compared to the students with a more traditional methodology (experimental group / mean: 32.1346 / control group / mean: 28.4706). Punctuation correctness has been improved mainly in the usage of comma, colon and periods in different syntactic patterns. Furthermore, the perception of the students in the experimental group showed that they positively value chatbots in their teaching–learning process in three dimensions: greater “support” and companionship in the learning process, as they perceive greater interactivity due to their conversational nature; greater “feedback” and interaction compared to the more traditional methodology and, lastly, they especially value the ease of use and the possibility of interacting and learning anywhere and anytime.

This article analyzes the influence of Spanish citizens’ computer knowledge and level of education on their tolerance of, or aversion to, risk in the online purchase of goods and services. To this end, annual survey data from Spain’s National Statistics Institute were used to know the incidence in e-commerce of the following variables: “computer knowledge,” “electronic commerce,” and “socioeconomic characteristics.” A method based on the design of a computer knowledge indicator was used, followed by a bivariate logistic regression to determine computer knowledge and level of education. The results show that the higher the level of computer knowledge, the greater the impulse to buy online and the higher the tolerance of risk. There was also a positive relation between level of education and propensity to buy; the higher the level of education, the greater the propensity.

Las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación han revolucionado el mundo tal como lo conocíamos antes de su uso y aplicabilidad a la vida diaria. Este uso también se ha trasladado al campo educativo y ha transformado la forma en que se aprende y se enseña hoy. En medio de este panorama, los cursos abiertos masivos en línea emergen como una oportunidad disponible para que todos puedan aprender, lo que ha causado muchos cambios en el campo educativo. Este estudio se presenta como una investigación sobre prácticas universitarias innovadoras para analizar las ventajas y desventajas de estos MOOC en el entorno de la educación superior. Entre las principales ventajas analizadas, destacamos su gratuidad, el establecimiento de redes de colaboración y la flexibilidad horaria, mientras que entre las desventajas podemos destacar el abandono, que algunos cursos no están adaptados o disponibles para dispositivos fáciles o falta de seguimiento. La idea principal es que una vez que se conocen las ventajas y desventajas de los MOOC, se debe alentar a los primeros, dados los grandes beneficios que conllevan para la educación; y, a su vez, tratar de resolver las desventajas que se han visto que conducen al uso de MOOC, a fin de promover la efectividad de su uso. Information and communication technologies have revolutionized the world as we knew it before its use and applicability to daily life. This use has also moved to the educational field and has transformed the way it is learned and taught today. In the midst of this panorama, Massive Online Open Courses emerge as an opportunity available for everyone to learn, which has caused many changes in the educational field. This study is presented as an investigation into innovative university practices to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of these MOOCs in the Higher Education environment. Among the main advantages analyzed, we highlight its gratuity, the establishment of collaboration networks and time flexibility, while among the disadvantages we can highlight the abandonment, that some courses are not adapted or available for easy devices or lack of follow-up. The main idea is that once the advantages and disadvantages of MOOCs are known, the former should be encouraged, given the great benefits they entail for education; and in turn try to solve the disadvantages that have been seen that lead to the use of MOOCs, in order to promote the effectiveness of their use.

El presente estudio analiza la manera en que dos medios impresos del continente americano emplean la Realidad Aumentada como herramienta interactiva. El empleo de la Realidad Aumentada en el periodismo impreso podría incrementar la interactividad de los usuarios con los periódicos, a la vez que atraería nuevos públicos, para despertarles el interés por la prensa impresa y así ampliar su audiencia y cuota de mercado. Se analizan cinco ejemplares de los diarios Burnaby NOW (Canadá) y Kids News (Argentina). Se concluye que los ejemplares analizados se suman al proceso de renovación y reinvención del ecosistema mediático, motivados por las transformaciones tecnológicas -desde el punto de vista infraestructural- y culturales y sociales -desde la óptica superestructural-, lo cual no solo trastoca los pilares de la profesión, sino también la estabilidad y supervivencia de las empresas periodísticas a las que pertenecen esos medios.

En el presente estudio se analizan las competencias básicas digitales de 759 estudiantes universitarios de la Universidad Pablo de Olavide de siete cursos académicos (2012/13 a 2018/19). Los datos fueron recogidos mediante el cuestionario denominado “Competencias básicas digitales 2.0 de estudiantes universitarios” COBADI® (Marca registrada: 2970648). El análisis estadístico utilizando el SPSS describió cómo los estudiantes usan las tecnologías. Se analizaron género y diferencias de los cursos a través de un análisis múltiple de variación (MANOVA) como las variables independientes, y contestaciones a la encuesta como dependiente. Entre los resultados obtenidos se infieren que más de la mitad de los estudiantes encuestados dijeron que se conectaban más de 9 horas a la semana. A su vez, se constata un relevante y gradual cambio en los últimos años en cuanto al lugar de conexión a internet, desde el hogar como el principal lugar de conexión al teléfono móvil como medio más frecuente. Por último, como otro hallazgo significativo, es que en los hombres se refleja una disminución en el tiempo dedicado a realizar tareas académicas y un aumento en el tiempo dedicado a jugar

El objetivo de este estudio es conocer la valoración de los estudiantes acerca de las ventajas y limitaciones que tienen los cursos masivos abiertos en línea (MOOC, por sus siglas en inglés) frente a otros modelos de enseñanza en los contextos socio-educativos. Se ha seguido un método cualitativo descriptivo de una muestra de estudiantes universitarios españoles de educación social. Los datos se extrajeron a través de un análisis de contenido de cada uno de los edublogs que generó el alumnado. El análisis porcentual del alumnado universitario perteneciente a los aspectos positivos que presentan esta nueva modalidad formativa son los siguientes: gratuidad (16,67%), favorece a la formación de los desfavorecidos (13,61%), flexibilidad horaria (10,88%), educación en línea (9,52%) y gran variedad de cursos que ofrecen las plataformas MOOC (8,84%). Como conclusión, las principales fortalezas de los cursos MOOC es la gratuidad y sus principales debilidades son los escasos sistemas de tutorización y evaluación en otros modelos de enseñanza.

The health context related to the COVID-19 virus has implied challenges for various areas in which the educational sphere stands out. Preventive measures of social distancing and quarantine have led to classes being given virtually (online), and in this scenario research is emerging that focuses on the educational challenges of teachers. The DIFPRORET project, educational difficulties, activities and challenges in confinement is applied to a sample of 200 teachers, with a qualitative method and methodological strategy of content analysis. The findings show the difficulty in the use of platforms, understanding of distance education, creative action and the generation gap with 64.26%. With this, a hierarchical map is expressed that gives account of three significant constructs: didactic operation, progressive learning and curricular innovation, which allows us to conclude that under these constructs translate the perceptions of teachers on educational challenges. La inclusión de novedosas tecnologías digitales en el mundo universitario requiere el análisis de sus ventajas e inconvenientes. Tanto para su empleo didáctico en la búsqueda de alcanzar distintos objetivos formativos como para el desarrollo de competencias digitales en el alumnado es necesario establecer experiencias que nos permitan obtener información para su correcto uso. Es el objetivo principal de esta investigación, que se fundamenta en un trabajo de campo inmersivo con realidad aumentada (RA) que tuvo como muestra a estudiantes universitarios a lo largo de dos cursos académicos. La metodología empleada en este trabajo exploratorio es descriptiva y cualitativa, para el que se han usado diferentes aplicaciones de RA. Como resultado principal se ha podido determinar que la integración de estas apps contribuye de manera significativa a la mejora de la competencia digital de los estudiantes universitarios a la vez que potencia la motivación en el aprendizaje. Sin embargo, se presenta como inconveniente principal su escasa presencia en las aulas y la necesidad de una formación previa del profesorado en su correcto empleo.

The current educational processes must be supported by sustainable learning ecologies, where the digitalization of training is enhanced. In this area, augmented reality (AR) plays an important role. It is a technology that for certain educational goals can facilitate the understanding of the course contents and increase the motivation and interest of the student. This research aims to measure the socio-educational impact that AR presents in the teaching processes of university students of social education. These are professionals in training dedicated, precisely, to social and educational actions. In order to reach the pursued objective, an exploratory study of qualitative and descriptive nature was approached from a methodological conception based on the action-research. The study was carried out during three academic courses and consisted of an experience of integration of AR in the classroom in order to determine which applications, and advantages or limitations of a socio-educational nature, were perceived by the participants in that process. The documents generated were analyzed mainly using semantic methods. The main results were that AR is positive overall for its use in learning processes and, specifically in its field, optimal for the development of professional skills within the framework of social education. As to benefits, it highlighted the strengthening of learning dynamism, motivation, and interaction among students; as to limitations, these included the fact that it is not an accessible technology, the need for previous training and that it can reduce sociability. It was also stressed that it can be a useful resource in many areas of social education (childhood and adolescence, gerontology, drug addiction, etc.). In general, therefore, it can be concluded that the use of AR in university training, in this area of knowledge, allows content to be more dynamic and real in a sustainable way, thus achieving a highly transferable and motivating path to develop content and competencies.

The constant development of digital technologies has allowed living in a digital environment based on connections, also transforming the context of the educational process. Experiences show that digital technologies have influenced the way of learning and, consequently, the way of teaching. Learning in the digital age is a complex process since it is a multifaceted and diverse action. The aim of this research is to identify global trends in digital education and its link with the learning of artistic and visual education in higher education settings, during the period 2000–2019. For this, bibliometric techniques have been applied to 1291 documents, obtaining results from the scientific activity of the main authors, research institutions, and countries that promote this topic. The data show increasing relevance, particularly in the last three years. The main subject area is the social sciences. The study has detected the lines of research that are related to the Internet, education, visuals, computer programs, learning, digital media literacy, and educational technology. This work contributes to the academic, scientific, and institutional debate to enhance decision-making based on existing information.

The use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for the benefit of the environment favors the development of a sustainable education, which will help to train more responsible and aware students. The management of educational technology in the context of a sustainable higher education must achieve the internalization of ethics and the sustainable development of humanity. The main objective of this study is to, at a global level, examine the research during the period 2000–2019 on the management of ICTs for sustainable education in the context of higher education. Global research trends on this topic during the period 2000–2019 have been analyzed. Consequently, bibliometric techniques have been applied to a sample of 1814 articles selected from the Scopus database. The results provided data on the scientific productivity of the journal, authors, research institutions, and countries that contribute to the development of this topic. The evidence reveals an exponential trend, mainly in the last five years. In addition, current and future lines of research have been identified. Research at an international level presents a growing trend of publication that allows determination of the relevance of research on ICT management to achieve sustainable education in the context of higher education. This study makes it possible to establish the relationship between science, sustainability, and technology in higher education institutions, and to base the decision-making process for the driving agents of this area of knowledge.

Research Highlights: the wide variety of multispectral sensors that currently exist make it possible to improve the study of forest systems and ecosystem services. Background and Objectives: this study aims to analyze the current usefulness of remote sensing in forest management and ecosystem services sciences, and to identify future lines of research on these issues worldwide during the period 1976–2019. Materials and Methods: a bibliometric technique is applied to 2066 articles published between 1976 and 2019 on these topics to find findings on scientific production and key subject areas. Results: scientific production has increased annually, so that in the last five years, 50.34% of all articles have been published. The thematic areas in which more articles were linked were environmental science, agricultural, and biological sciences, and earth and planetary sciences. Seven lines of research have been identified that generate contributions on this topic. In addition, the analysis of the relevance of the keywords has detected the ten main future directions of research. The growing worldwide trend of scientific production shows interest in developing aspects of this field of study. Conclusions: this study contributes to the academic, scientific, and institutional discussion to improve decision-making, and proposes new scenarios and uses of this technology to improve the administration and management of forest resources.

La gamificación es una de las metodologías activas actuales utilizadas para motivar al alumnado y que de manera activa construyan su aprendizaje. En esta investigación, se analiza la activación desde la perspectiva de las experiencias gamificadas en estudiantes universitarios. Dentro del conjunto de dimensiones desarrolladas y puesta a prueba por la literatura científica ponemos en valor la importancia de la misma como precursora de otro tipo de ventajas para el desarrollo educativo de los estudiantes. Los resultados indican valores altos de activación para estudiantes inmersos en actividades gamificadas además de que no existen variables sociodemográficas que afecten a este tipo de valores de forma significativa.

Work in higher educational centres implicates the use of different types of methodology. The digital society demands students with a digital competence, and it is the responsibility of the university institution to ensure they succeed in obtaining it. This article presents an innovative immersive experience developed in a seminar on emerging technologies with 231 university students, and records their perceptions of some augmented reality apps used on the Social Education degree course and the Social Work and Social Education joint degree course at Pablo de Olavide University in Seville (Spain) in the academic years 2016-2018. A qualitative exploratory descriptive study was used to analyse the experience. The study presents the most important findings of this experience with augmented reality at the university, and proposes some didactic uses for the most interesting of these apps, with attention to their usability, ease of use and capacity to help early-stage learners to acquire new knowledge. Students considered that AR apps would provide educational scenarios that were more stimulating, collaborative and interactive, and would foment a more open type of education (N= 159/68.8%). The principal conclusion is using this technology in the psychosocial treatment of problems could help social area professionals to sharpen their competences and, at the same time, reinforce support and improve the conditions and treatments of aspects identified in these at risk groups. https://doi.org/10.26803/ijlter.19.8. 21

Introducción. En el presente artículo se presenta un estudio diacrónico en el que se analizan 405 concepciones de estudiantes universitarios sobre la Sociedad de la Información implementadas a través de un software social (Word Clouds). Objetivo. El objetivo principal consiste en analizar la funcionalidad didáctica de herramientas de creación y difusión de contenido digital para el desarrollo de contenidos de asignaturas universitarias. Materiales y métodos. La muestra participante está compuesta por estudiantes de dos titulaciones: Doble Grado en Trabajo Social y Educación Social correspondientes a los cursos académicos 2010/11 a 2016/17 y Grado de Educación Social (2013/2017) de la Universidad Pablo de Olavide de Sevilla (España). A través de una metodología descriptiva y cualitativa se realiza la codificación y análisis de frecuencias temáticas de las nubes de palabras creadas por los estudiantes correspondiente al curso académico 2011-12 del doble Grado de Trabajo Social y Educación Social (T.S/E.S) y se comparan con los restantes cursos académicos. Resultados. Los resultados muestran que los términos más representativos para los estudiantes son: Globalización (61,86%), Comunicación (43,85%), Tecnología (43,85%), Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación (TIC) (41,73%), Información (38,98%), e Internet- Red de redes (25,21%). Por último, cabe resaltar que dieciséis nuevos términos aparecen, dependiendo del año académico, siendo los más mencionados: Desigualdad (19,91%), Crisis (13,13%) y Consumo (8,47%). Conclusión. Esta experiencia universitaria permite mostrar que la utilización educativa de creación de nubes de palabras digitales puede ser un recurso didáctico muy interesante como vehículo para el sedimento reflexivo y repositorio de experiencias de aprendizaje del alumnado universitario.

The main objective of this research is to establish the measurement of pre-service teachers on the MOOC phenomenon, one of the most important manifestations within the processes of on-line education that have emerged under the protection of the digital paradigm. The research methodology used was of an exploratory, qualitative, and descriptive nature. It falls within the generic scope of qualitative research methods of an ethnographic nature through the analysis of learning objects and interventions in the network. The sample (n = 218) was composed of students from the educational field, who took a subject focused on ICT applied to education, over several academic years. Using the edublog as a digital and documentary source, a total of 1962 frequencies were collected referring to the advantages (1052 frequencies) and limitations (910 frequencies) that they determined when carrying out these courses. As main results, it is worth mentioning that pre-service teachers consider MOOC courses valuable as teaching models in socio-educational contexts. They offer unquestionable advantages such as free of charge usage, training for disadvantaged groups, flexible hours, etc. However, their disadvantages are also important. For example, it is considered that these courses do not adequately follow up on the student, that the materials they offer are not very innovative, or also that the evaluation of the learning is inadequate. It is interesting to note that the main problems identified are of a pedagogical, not technical, nature.

The COVID-19 health crisis has had a global effect, but the consequences in the different countries affected have been very different. In Spain, in a short period of time, health professionals went from a situation of stability to living with a working environment characterized by overcrowded hospitals, lack of individual protection equipment, non-existent or contradictory work protocols, as well as an unknown increase in mortality. Although in their professional activity health workers are closely linked to death processes, in recent months, working conditions and health emergencies have drawn an unheard of working scenario, with the stress and anxiety they may suffer when faced with the death of their patients. The present quantitative research was carried out in different hospitals in Spain on health professionals during the month of April 2020. Through the subscale of anxiety in the face of the death of others, developed by Collett–Lester, it has been verified that health professionals have had to develop their work in a context of precariousness, putting at risk both their individual and collective health, notably increasing anxiety in the face of the death of their patients. The predictive variables of this anxiety have been the absence of individual protection equipment, as well as high levels in the burnout subscales of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization.

The development of technologies enables the application of the Internet of Things (IoT) in urban environments, creating smart cities. Hence, the optimal management of data generated in the interconnection of electronic sensors in real time improves the quality of life. The objective of this study is to analyze global research on smart cities based on IoT technology applications. For this, bibliometric techniques were applied to 1232 documents on this topic, corresponding to the period 2011–2019, to obtain findings on scientific activity and the main thematic areas. Scientific production has increased annually, so that the last triennium has accumulated 83.23% of the publications. The most outstanding thematic areas were Computer Science and Engineering. Seven lines have been identified in the development of research on smart cities based on IoT applications. In addition, the study has detected seven new future research directions. The growing trend at the global level of scientific production shows the interest in developing aspects of smart cities based on IoT applications. This study contributes to the academic, scientific, and institutional discussion to improve decision making based on the available information.
