Objective: Dissatisfaction with body image and maladaptive nutritional behaviors can have profound effects on psychological, social, and physical health and may pave the way for the development of eating disorders. However, research into this topic in the adult population is relatively limited. Therefore, this study aimed to examine various factors affecting dissatisfaction with body image and maladaptive nutritional behaviors in adults living in Türkiye and the relationship between these two concepts. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with 3,153 adult individuals who were ≥ 18 years old living in Türkiye. The data of the study, which was conducted as an online survey, were collected using the Descriptive Information Form, the Body Image Scale, and the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire. Results: Of the participants, 70.1% were women. The mean age was 28.02 ± 9.27 (Min.: 18, Max.: 74) years. The relationship between the mean scores on the total Body Image Scale and Uncontrolled Eating (r = -0.094, p < 0.000), Emotional Eating (r = -0.171, p < 0.001), and Susceptibility to Hunger (r = -0.108, p < 0.001) scores was negative. A statistically significant and positive relationship was detected between the mean scores on the total Body Image Scale and the Cognitive Restraint score (r = 0.089, p < 0.001). Statistically significant relationships were detected in the model adjusted for age and gender between the Body Image Scale and Emotional Eating scores (B = -1.085, p < 0.000), and Cognitive Restraint scores indicated positive relationships (B = 0.848, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Body image satisfaction was found to be negatively associated with uncontrolled eating, emotional eating, and susceptibility to hunger. On the other hand, a positive relationship was found between body image satisfaction and cognitive restraint. These findings highlight the critical importance of body image satisfaction on eating behaviors and provide potential insight into prevention and intervention programs to improve body image to promote adaptive eating behaviors in the adult population.

Eating disorders are life-threatening conditions that have psychiatric and medical comorbidities and can impact individuals of all genders. It is known that women are particularly at risk for these conditions and that psychosocial factors play an undeniable role in this process. Therefore, it is of great importance to identify these critical risk factors to develop effective prevention strategies. This study aimed to investigate the role of social physique anxiety and emotional eating as potential risk factors for eating disorders in a sample of adult women from the general population. This descriptive and cross-sectional research was conducted with 1,501 women across Türkiye between April and July 2023. Data were collected via an online survey that included a Descriptive Information Form, SCOFF Eating Disorders Questionnaire, Social Physique Anxiety Scale (SPAS), and Emotional Appetite Questionnaire (EMAQ). Risk of eating disorders was detected in half of the women (50.0%). According to multivariate linear regression analysis, SCOFF Eating Disorders Scale scores were negatively associated with body satisfaction and EMAQ positive emotions subscale scores. SCOFF Eating Disorders Scale scores were positively related to fear of gaining weight status, body mass index, status of selection of food according to mood, EMAQ negative emotions subscale scores, and SPAS total scores. The results of this study showed that social-physical anxiety, fear of gaining weight, body mass index, and negative mood were significant positive predictors of risk of eating disorders in women.

This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between anxiety and nutritional habits in individuals during the COVID-19 period. The study was carried out with 800 individuals living in provinces across Turkey between February and March 2021. Data were collected using a questionnaire created on Google Forms, which included a Descriptive Information Form, the ORTO-11 Scale, and the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale. The mean anxiety score of participants whose nutritional habits changed was statistically significantly higher than the score of those whose nutritional habits did not change (p = 0.000). It was found that the mean anxiety scores were found to be statistically significantly higher in participants whose weight increased than in those whose weight did not change (p = 0.002) and in those who consumed three or more snacks a day than in those who did not consume snacks at all (p = 0.002).The mean anxiety scores were found to be statistically significantly higher also in participants who used Zn (p = 0.015), Mg (p = 0.019), omega 3 (p = 0.002), vitamin C (p = 0.000), vitamin D (p = 0.000), turmeric extract (p = 0.002), black elderberry extract (p =0.001), and multivitamins (p=0.001) than in those who did not use them. A very weak, negative, and statistically significant relationship was found between the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale and ORTO-11 Scale scores (r: -0.102, p = 0.000). According to the findings of this study, the increase in individuals’ anxiety levels during the COVID-19 pandemic caused changes in their nutritional status.

Organic food consumption has gained increasing attention in the context of healthy and sustainable dietary behaviours. However, the roles of food neophobia and food choice motives remain insufficiently understood. Whether food neophobia and food choice motives were related to organic food consumption orientation, defined by the Organic Food Consumption Scale (OFCS), was evaluated in 506 adults aged 18–64 years from Kırklareli, Türkiye. Participants completed the OFCS, the Food Neophobia Scale and the Food Choice Questionnaire in a single session using a paper-based self-administered questionnaire. Associations were estimated with Spearman coefficients and multivariable linear models adjusted for age and gender. Overall, 73.5% reported consuming foods they considered organic. The total food choice motive score was positively associated with organic food consumption orientation, whereas the total food neophobia score was not. At the subdimension level, health, natural content (the strongest association) and weight control motives were positively associated with orientation. Within food neophobia, greater willingness to try new foods and lower trust in new foods were associated with a stronger orientation. Orientation was thus associated not with overall food neophobia but with its specific dimensions and with food choice motives. These findings may inform research on consumer orientations towards organic food.
