Modern agriculture faces the critical need to develop sustainable, safe, and effective strategies for enhancing productivity, protecting plants and animals, and ensuring food security. Challenges posed by antibiotic resistance and the adverse environmental and consumer health impacts of chemical agents are driving the search for eco-friendly alternatives. In this context, bacteriocins—naturally occurring antimicrobial peptides synthesized by diverse bacteria—represent a promising alternative to traditional chemical compounds. This article reviews the potential and current advances in bacteriocin applications across agricultural sectors, with particular focus on their targeted antagonistic activity, structural diversity, commercial bacteriocin-based products, and their utilization in livestock farming, crop production, poultry farming, and aquaculture. Key findings demonstrate that bacteriocins, particularly nisin and pediocin PA-1, exhibit potent activity against major agricultural pathogens including Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium perfringens, and Escherichia coli, with efficacy rates reaching 90% in mastitis treatment and significantly reducing pathogen loads in poultry and aquaculture systems. Commercial products such as Nisaplin, Wipe Out, and ALTA 2431 have been successfully implemented in veterinary medicine and food production. In aquaculture, bacteriocins effectively control Lactococcus garvieae, Aeromonas spp., Vibrio spp., and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, contributing to sustainable disease management with minimal environmental impact. It can be suggested that bacteriocins may play an essential role in combating pathogens and offer viable alternatives to conventional antibiotics across primary food production systems, though optimization of production methods and regulatory frameworks remains essential for broader commercial adoption.

In the present study, literature information on the functioning of the biofloc technology (BFT) system, its components, the state of the organism of hydrobionts, and water quality is analyzed. It is shown that this technology allows reducing financial costs for water treatment by 30%, increasing the efficiency of protein assimilation in the feed composition by two times, and creating a high-protein substrate, which can be further used as a component of feed for aquaculture. The BFT contains a large number of microorganisms, including photoautotrophic microorganisms (algae), chemoautotrophic microorganisms (nitrifying bacteria), and heterotrophic microorganisms (fungi, infusoria, protozoa, and zooplankton). This technology contributes to the improvement in water quality, aquaculture productivity, and hydrobionts. Despite the higher initial costs, BFT can yield higher economic profits. In this paper, the authors summarize data from many recent studies devoted to BFT. Based on the analysis of a number of studies, it can be concluded that this technology has a high potential for scaling up in industrial aquaculture.

In this work, we evaluated the silvicultural and ecological parameters of Populus bolleana Lauche trees growing in conditions of anthropogenic pollution, using the example of one of the largest megacities of the Donetsk ridge, the city of Donetsk. The objectives of this study included determining the level of anthropogenic load of the territory; conducting dendrological studies to assess morphometric and allometric parameters, age structure, and condition of P. bolleana stands under the influence of environmental factors; as well as completing biomechanical studies to assess and predict the mechanical stability of stands. A total of 1109 plants growing in areas with increased anthropogenic load and in the control areas were studied. The model territories of the study were located in the city of Donetsk on Fallen Communards Avenue (length of field routes: 2.6 km) and Ilyicha Avenue (length of field routes: 9.7 km). Control plantings grew on the territory of the Donetsk botanical garden and residential (dormitory) districts of the city. The age structure of P. bolleana plantations remained uniform throughout the city for 50–55 years due to the fact that the landscaping was under a single state program. In the steppe zone in the south of the East European Plain, with a high level of anthropogenic load and severe natural climatic factors, the critical age of P. bolleana (55 years) was determined. The condition of plantations and their morphometric indices correlate with the level of anthropogenic load of the city (H, Dbase, DBH). Under control conditions, the plants are in good condition with signs of weakening (2 points). Under conditions of increased anthropogenic load, the plants are in a severely weakened condition (3 points). A total of 25% of the plants in the sample are in critical condition (4–5 points). The main damages to the crowns and trunks of plants include core rot, mechanical damage to bark and tissues, the development of core rot through the affected skeletal branch, crown thinning, and drying. P. bolleana trees are valued for their crown area and ability to retain dust particles from the air. The analysis of experimentally obtained data on the crown area showed that in the initial phases of ontogenesis, the average deviation in the crown area of plants does not depend on the place of growth. Due to artificial narrowing and sanitary pruning of the crown, as well as skeletal branches dying along the busiest highways, the values do not exceed 22–23 m2 on average, with an allometric coefficient of 0.35–0.37. When comparing this coefficient in the control areas, the crown area in areas with a high level of anthropogenic load is 36 ± 11% lower. For trees growing under the conditions of the anthropogenic load of an industrial city and having reached the critical age, mechanical resistance varied depending on the study area and load level. At sites with a high level of pollution of the territory, a significant decrease in indicators was revealed in comparison with the control (mcr—71%, EI—75%, RRB—43%). Having analyzed all the obtained data, we can conclude that, until the age of 50–55 years, P. bolleana retains good viability, mechanical resistance, and general allometric ratios, upon which the stability of the whole plant depends. Even with modern approaches and tendencies toward landscaping with exotic introductions, it is necessary to keep P. bolleana as the main species in dendrobanocenoses.

The shift toward plant-based feeds in aquaculture necessitates a search for probiotics to improve the digestibility of such feeds and fish growth. This study characterizes four Bacillus strains for their probiotic potential in carp (Cyprinus carpio). Strains isolated from river sediments underwent in vitro screening for proteolytic/amylolytic activity, antibiotic sensitivity, and biofilm formation. Whole-genome sequencing was performed and functional annotation identified probiotic-related genes. All strains were identified as Bacillus velezensis and harbored genes providing thermal, osmotic, and oxidative stress resistance, alongside enzymes and bioactive metabolite synthesis pathways. Two non-antagonistic strain pairs were solid-phase cultivated on soybeans and incorporated into carp feed (0.1% w/w) for a 76-day trial, and growth metrics and gene expression were analyzed in juvenile fish. Group 1 (strains MT14 + MT42) exhibited a 40.75% higher biomass increase than the control group while Group 2 (strains MT141 + MT142) exhibited a 56.62% higher biomass growth. No significant gene expression changes occurred in juveniles, though MT141 + MT142 transiently modulated fry expression profiles. Therefore, these Bacillus velezensis strains synergistically enhance growth in carp that are fed plant-rich diets, highlighting their viability as aquaculture probiotics.

The aim of the work is to analyze the survival strategy of Taxus baccata L., one of the promising plants for landscaping and the creation of woodlands, in the changing ecological conditions of the steppe zone of the Donetsk ridge. In order to achieve this goal, we used biomechanics methods, which help to understand the relationship between the physical and mechanical properties of living tissues and the overall stability of trees during interactions with environmental factors such as temperature, snow and ice storms, cyclic freeze–thaw processes, wind loads, and others. The work was based both on experimental studies on the estimation of the tissue elasticity modulus in response to temperature changes, the mechanical stability of plants, the field collection of materials, and studies on the modeling of forest stand conditions of English yew. As a result of the conducted experiments, it was established for the first time that at the absolute wood moisture content of 77 ± 5.1%, the density of wood tissues in the conditions of Donetsk is 907 ± 43 kg m−3. The modulus of elasticity of living tissues depending on the temperature factor varied in the following range: 8.8 ± 0.31 GN m−2 (T = 288 K), 11.5 ± 0.55 GN m−2 (T = 255 K) and 6.9 ± 0.47 GN m−2 (t = 308 K). It was revealed that during the local thawing of skeletal branches and tables, the mechanical resistance of T. baccata is reduced by 20–22% and this critically affects the overall plant resistance. It was established for the first time that T. baccata in the conditions of the steppe zone has an adaptive strategy of preserving the integrity of the organism under the action of environmental factors with limited loads. The secret lies in the formation of the shape memory effect, under the influence of critical loads. The plant, thus, chooses not migration, not death, but adaptation to changes in environmental conditions, which can become a serious factor in the use of T. baccata in the landscaping of urban areas and the creation of artificial forests.

This study presents a biomonitoring study of surface waters in the Krynka River basin, encompassing three major regional reservoirs: Khanzhenkovskoe, Olkhovskoe, and Zuyevskoe. These water bodies face significant anthropogenic pressure from mining effluents, industrial discharges, and domestic wastewater. Key pollutants identified are surfactants (SAAs), sulfates, phenols, chlorides, and manganese, with chemical oxygen demand (COD) exceeding regulatory limits. The research was conducted in September 2024. Based on the Specific Combinatorial Water Pollution Index, surface waters in the studied objects can be characterized as slightly polluted. To assess the negative impact of the identified pollutants on hydrobionts, the species composition of phytoplankton of the studied water bodies was analyzed. In the Olkhovskoe Reservoir and Olkhovaya River, cyanobacterial blooms (Oscillatoria agardhii G.) were observed, altering biodiversity in the Krynka River and Zuyevskoe Reservoir. Phytoplankton genera Synedra, Amphiprora, and Navicula—established bioindicators of aquatic ecosystem health—were dominant in Khanzhenkovskoe Reservoir, signaling nutrient enrichment and organic pollution. Changes in the species composition and structure of phytoplankton in the Krynka River, its tributaries and reservoirs, indicate a change in the level of saprobic water bodies from β to α-mesosaprobic, which indicates both the general level of surface water pollution and the accumulation of pollutants along the course of the river. The paper presents the results of fluorimetric analysis of photosynthetic activity of natural phytoplankton cells and demonstrates the possibility of using fluorescence induction curves for regular monitoring measurements. Fluorescence parameters indicate a general deterioration of photosynthetic activity of natural phytoplankton. The growth of Oscillatoria agardhii in the waters of the Olkhovskoe Reservoir and of green microalgae in the Zuevskoe Reservoir led to an increase in the fluorescence quantum yield (Fv/Fm) and the total photosynthetic activity index (PI), which makes it possible to use these parameters as indicator parameters reflecting the intensity of “blooming” of various phytoplankton species.
