Selective harmonic elimination (SHE) technique is used in power inverters to eliminate specific lower-order harmonics by determining optimum switching angles that are used to generate Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signals for multilevel inverter (MLI) switches. Various optimization algorithms have been developed to determine the optimum switching angles. However, these techniques are still trapped in local optima. This study proposes an opposition-based quantum bat algorithm (OQBA) to determine these optimum switching angles. This algorithm is formulated by utilizing habitual characteristics of bats. It has advanced learning ability that can effectively remove lower-order harmonics from the output voltage of MLI. It can eventually increase the quality of the output voltage along with the efficiency of the MLI. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated with three different case studies involving 7, 11, and 17-level three-phase MLIs. The results are verified using both simulation and experimental studies. The results showed substantial improvement and superiority compared to other available algorithms both in terms of the harmonics reduction of harmonics and finding the correct solutions.

Metaheuristic algorithms are widely used for optimization in both research and the industrial community for simplicity, flexibility, and robustness. However, multi-modal optimization is a difficult task, even for metaheuristic algorithms. Two important issues that need to be handled for solving multi-modal problems are (a) to categorize multiple local/global optima and (b) to uphold these optima till the ending. Besides, a robust local search ability is also a prerequisite to reach the exact global optima. Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) is a recently developed nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm that requires less parameter tuning. However, the GWO suffers from premature convergence and fails to maintain the balance between exploration and exploitation for solving multi-modal problems. This study proposes a niching GWO (NGWO) that incorporates personal best features of PSO and a local search technique to address these issues. The proposed algorithm has been tested for 23 benchmark functions and three engineering cases. The NGWO outperformed all other considered algorithms in most of the test functions compared to state-of-the-art metaheuristics such as PSO, GSA, GWO, Jaya and two improved variants of GWO, and niching CSA. Statistical analysis and Friedman tests have been conducted to compare the performance of these algorithms thoroughly.

Vibration measurement and its real-time graphical representation is often required for analysis of physical conditions of machines, engines as well as in scientific researches, earth-quake amplitude measurement etc. This project work was intended to develop a system for measurement and real-time visualization of vibration. An electronic accelerometer sensor facilitates the vibration sensing procedure. The measured value is then transmitted to the visualization software installed in a personal computer which provides quantitative and qualitative information about the vibration phenomena in addition with a real-time graphical visualization feature. Two test cases were selected to verify the performance of the system. The first one was implemented to visualize and measure vibration parameters of a simple plastic stand, and the second one was intended to test the system performance on an induction motor for measurement and visualization of its horizontal vibration parameters. The performance analysis in the above mentioned cases confirms the stability and reliability of the system in vibration analysis for frequency range up to 5 kHz. This concludes to a low cost vibration analysis system for uses in medium range vibration analysis like earth quake monitoring, machine vibration level monitoring etc. Though there are many available vibrations analysis systems are available, this paper work is intended to derive the process of building a low cost PIC microcontroller and C# .NET based vibration analysis system for general purpose uses like laboratory equipment or study material from commercially available equipment.

In this paper, the performance of an active neutral point clamped (ANPC) inverter is evaluated, which is developed utilizing both silicon (Si) and gallium trioxide (Ga2O3) devices. The hybridization of semiconductor devices is performed since the production volume and fabrication of ultra-wide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductors are still in the early-stage, and they are highly expensive. In the proposed ANPC topology, the Si devices are operated at a low switching frequency, while the Ga2O3 switches are operated at a higher switching frequency. The proposed ANPC mitigates the fault current in the switching devices which are prevalent in conventional ANPCs. The proposed ANPC is developed by applying a specified modulation technique and an intelligent switching arrangement, which has further improved its performance by optimizing the loss distribution among the Si/Ga2O3 devices and thus effectively increases the overall efficiency of the inverter. It profoundly reduces the common mode current stress on the switches and thus generates a lower common-mode voltage on the output. It can also operate at a broad range of power factors. The paper extensively analyzed the switching performance of UWBG semiconductor (Ga2O3) devices using double pulse testing (DPT) and proper simulation results. The proposed inverter reduced the fault current to 52 A and achieved a maximum efficiency of 99.1%.

The high dimensional, multimodal, and discontinuous well placement optimization is one of the main difficult factors in the development process of conventional as well as shale gas reservoir, and to optimize this problem, metaheuristic techniques still suffer from premature convergence. Hence, to tackle this problem, this study aims at introducing a dimension-wise diversity analysis for well placement optimization. Moreover, in this article, quantum computational techniques are proposed to tackle the well placement optimization problem. Diversity analysis reveals that dynamic exploration and exploitation strategy is required for each reservoir. In case studies, the results of the proposed approach outperformed all the state-of-the-art algorithms and provided a better solution than other algorithms with higher convergence rate, efficiency, and effectiveness. Furthermore, statistical analysis shows that there is no statistical difference between the performance of Quantum bat algorithm and Quantum Particle swarm optimization algorithm. Hence, this quantum adaptation is the main factor that enhances the results of the optimization algorithm and the approach can be applied to locate wells in conventional and shale gas reservoir.

Well placement optimization is considered a non-convex and highly multimodal optimization problem. In this article, a modified crow search algorithm is proposed to tackle the well placement optimization problem. This article proposes modifications based on local search and niching techniques in the crow search algorithm (CSA). At first, the suggested approach is verified by experimenting with the benchmark functions. For test functions, the results of the proposed approach demonstrated a higher convergence rate and a better solution. Again, the performance of the proposed technique is evaluated with well placement optimization problem and compared with particle swarm optimization (PSO), the Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA), and the Crow search algorithm (CSA). The outcomes of the study revealed that the niching crow search algorithm is the most efficient and effective compared to the other techniques.
