The optimal localization of intermodal terminal is very important issue from the viewpoint its future use. The location of the assessed, actual public intermodal terminal is considered based on this main criterion. On the other hand, when approving the construction of a public terminal in Žilina, supported with European Union funds, it was assumed that the motorway network would be completed in its vicinity. The paper presents the results of research which aim was to examine the impact of unfinished superior transport infrastructure of two intermodal terminals in the Žilina self-governing region, considering the time of their availability. The transport modeling tools were used in the research on the transport network of the Žilina region within the developed multimodal transport model. The paper presents research published for 2018 and for the prospective of 2048, when all the superior infrastructure should have been built.

The global health crisis, to the extent we are experiencing, has not affected the international community for more than a century. The epidemiological situation in recent months has severely affected all spheres of life and the economy, and has also significantly affected bus transport. Irregular bus tour transport was affected most by the measures taken and a number of carriers have no transport performance. The paper examines the results of the impact of the adopted preventive measures against the spread of COVID-19 on suburban bus transport and urban public transport. Due to the lack of overall data for 2020, a statistical survey was carried out on a sample of selected bus operators, examining the development of the number of passengers carried, the number of kilometers traveled during the first six months of 2020 compared to 2019. The adopted anti-epidemic measures have impacts on the costs of carriers and the outflow of passengers to passenger cars, respectively. to other types of mobility e.g. bicycle transport. This means increasing demands on the financing of bus transport by customers of public passenger transport.

In EU Member States, it is still the case that, except where provided for by national law, the rules on access to the occupation of road transport operator do not apply to undertakings engaged in the occupation of road transport operator exclusively by motor vehicles with a maximum permissible laden weight not exceeding 3,5 tonnes or combination vehicle with the specified maximum weight. The European Commission has pointed out for long time that the number of such companies or vehicles operating both nationally and internationally are also growing. In order to avoid possible gaps and to ensure, through common rules, a minimum level of professionalisation in the sector in which vehicles used exclusively for the carriage of goods with a maximum permissible laden weight not exceeding 3,5 tonnes are used, thereby approximating the conditions of competition between all operators. Requirements for access to the profession should become mandatory for operators using motor vehicles or combinations of vehicles intended exclusively for the carriage of goods in international transport, the maximum permissible laden weight of which exceeds 2.5 tonnes but does not exceed 3.5 tonnes. Therefore, the aim of the paper is to examine the development of the number of trucks up to 3.5 tons in the past time in the Slovak Republic and Poland, but also their use in traffic surveys on a selected transport network in the Slovak Republic. The results of the survey show a relatively large share of these vehicles in the statistics of newly registered vehicles as well as a large share in the traffic flow and on the highway between the two countries. Tightening the requirements for access to the profession and introducing the obligation for digital tachographs to control the driver’s driving mode will have implications for logistical planning, especially for long-distance express services.

Transport is key for our economy and society, as good transport infrastructure helps to improve the mobility of citizens and the flow of goods. The European Union intends to maintain support for the development of transport infrastructure in the individual Member States. The aim of this study was to use correlation analysis to compare selected parameters of the road and railway infrastructure of Japan and selected EU countries. The significance of the correlations between various parameters characterizing the transport infrastructure of Japan and selected EU countries was tested. Correlation analysis is not typical in transport-oriented research. Several studies have employed such analysis; however, the majority of them have focused on passenger transport and correlations concerning the behavior of the customers of this mode of transport. The aim of this study was to answer the following research question: is there any correlation between transport performance and infrastructure or investment in infrastructure in relation to the mentioned countries, and, if so, is there a connection between the selected countries where this correlation occurs? Greater investment can also be expected in the construction of high-speed railways, given the decisions of some EU Member States not to resume national air transport where there is good railway infrastructure, even after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic there had already been an increase in individual shipment transportation including inner-city areas. During the pandemic and implementation of adopted preventive measures, it has increased by more than 100% in some cities. This presents an unsustainable development, particularly in terms of urban environment. The above-mentioned development has accelerated the research related to optimal allocation of logistics centres considering the last-mile distribution. Unfortunately, the theoretical mathematical model that finds an optimal urban logistics centre location based on the matrix of distance, number, and weight of shipments is not applicable in most cities. Therefore, the following research methodology was chosen in accordance with the approved territorial plan. The authors considered those locations in Bratislava—the capital of Slovak Republic—which are designated, or suitable for building up of an urban logistics centre. These localities were afterwards evaluated in a real-world case study employing methods of mathematical programming (linear programming), the nearest neighbour method, and the Clarke-Wright method. The presented methodology can be applied not only when deciding on the appropriate location of the city logistics centre, but also at optimizing the vehicle routing problem. Taking into account the urban logistics sustainability and the e-commerce growth, it was analysed whether the suggested location of urban logistics centre is feasible to provision examined facilities using electric vehicles. The range of considered electric vehicles of N2 category present in the market tends to be at the limits of distribution routes length for the given case study. Therefore, the article also deals with the fast-charging possibilities of vehicles during handling operations and the use of hybrid freight vehicles in city logistics.

Safety is one of the key aspects of the successful transport of cargo. In the case of road transport, the dynamics of a vehicle during normal events such as braking, steering, and evasive maneuver are variable in different places in the vehicle. Several manufacturers provide different dataloggers with acceleration sensors, but the results are not comparable due to different sensor parameters, measurement ranges, sampling frequencies, data filtration, and evaluation of different periods of acceleration. The position of the sensor in the loading area is also important. The accelerations are not the same at all points in the vehicle. The article deals with the measurement of these dynamic events with MEMS sensors on selected points of a vehicle loaded with cargo and with changes in dynamics after certain events that could occur during regular road transport of cargo to analyze the possibilities for monitoring accelerations and the related forces acting on the cargo during transport. The article uses evaluation times of 80, 300, and 1000 ms for accelerations. With the measured values, it is possible to determine the places with a higher risk of cargo damage and not only to adjust the packaging and securing of the cargo, but also to modify the transport routes. Concerning the purposes of securing the cargo in relation to EN 12195-1 and the minimum values of forces for securing the cargo, we focused primarily on the places where the acceleration of 0.5 g was exceeded when analyzing the monitored route. There were 32 of these points in total, all of which were measured by a sensor located at the rear of the semi-trailer. In 31 cases, the limit of 0.5 g was exceeded for an 80-ms evaluation time, and in one case, the value of 0.51 g was reached in the transverse direction for a 300-ms evaluation time.

In large urban agglomerations, various logistical problems arise due to high population density and deficient transport infrastructure. City logistics involves the efficient distribution of freight transport in urban areas and approaches to mitigate environmental impacts and traffic congestion. This paper aims to use a two-step cluster analytic approach to segmentation of EU27 capital cities based on their city logistics performance. To obtain primary outcomes, the log-likelihood measure in SPSS Statistics was used. The results can be used to identify the development and implementation of logistics measures in capitals across the EU. In addition to clustering, the statistical analysis evaluates the position of investigated cities concerning traffic congestions, and from an environmental point of view, the carbon dioxide produced from transport. The scrutiny delivers practical outlooks on how clustering can be undertaken and proves how the clusters can be used to plan city logistics and supply chain management. Finally, the paper deals with smart city indices from the perspective of sustainable mobility and examines its correlation with city logistics.

Diesel is the most used fuel for buses and other urban transport vehicles in European countries. This paper deals with impacts on emissions production from the operation of the urban public transport fleet after its renewal. To what extent can the renewal of the urban public transport fleet in the city of Žilina contribute to increasing environmental sustainability in the way of reducing air pollution? The vehicle fleet change has partially consisted of vehicle traction system transition-diesel buses were substituted by hybrid driven (HEV) and electric driven buses (BEV). How can the direct and indirect emissions from the operation of vehicles be calculated? These were the posed research questions. The research aimed to propose a methodology for the calculation of direct and indirect emissions. Indirect emissions values (WtT—Well-to-Tank) for different types of fuels and tractions were obtained based on regression functions. These WtT emission factors together with the existing TtW (Tank-to-Wheels) emission factors (direct emissions) can be used for the assessment of environmental impacts of specific types of vehicles concerning energy source, fuel, or powertrain and type of operation. Direct pollutants such as CO, NOx and PM were calculated with the use of simulation methodology of HBEFA (Handbook of Emission Factors for Road Transport) software. The calculated CO2 savings for the period 2019–2023 about fleet renewal in absolute terms are EUR 1.3 million tons compared to the operation of the original fleet while maintaining the same driving performance. The renewal of the vehicle fleet secured by vehicle traction transition can be a way to reduce the energy intensity and environmental impacts of public transport in Žilina.

The main aim of the paper is the analysis of simulation model reflecting selected in-warehouse logistics processes in the aspect of their availability. For this purpose, one-aisle machine picking problem with use of a stochastic random simulation is studied, with a special focus on reliability of the system to disturbances and maintenance scheduling. The methodology in the research consists of classic measures of reliability. The model is designed in order to analyze availability of selected parameters of randomly generated order picking process. One of key-results of the paper is answer for question if a mean time to failure can be treated as a value of time when the first failure in the system occurs. A summary of the contribution includes discussion and the perspectives for further research in the subject matter.

The paper includes the results of the research, which deals with the comparison of monitored parameters on air passenger transport and international bus transport. The main parameters, which we compared are the price level of transport relations from the passenger’s point of view and the emission footprint for various transport relations. The paper is the response to the increasing trend in the number of passengers in air transport in the Slovak Republic in recent years. The paper also responds to the expansion of the international bus transport network, which is also observable in the Slovak Republic. The main scientific question is whether is effective to replace international bus routes with air passenger lines. The contribution of the paper is an objective assessment of the efficiency of the operation of various transport relations in terms of the mode of transport used. The research results published in the paper can be used as a basis for assessing the efficiency of air and bus transport lines in individual transport relations.

There is a significant increase of transport performance, especially in the international road freight transport. Higher intensity of vehicles and related negative situations result into difficulties in meeting the deadlines of goods’ loading and unloading, as well as the obligation to take mandatory safety breaks and rest times. From 15th of June 2019, intelligent tachographs linked with GNSS have been implemented to all newly registered freight vehicles in EU Member States. Control of compliance with social legislation will be possible to make remotely through vehicles monitoring. The simple question arises: Is there in Slovakia enough parking lots for freight transport vehicles and are they equipped on sufficient level for drivers and their needs and safety? The main goal of this paper is the analysis of current state of parking areas in the Slovak republic. Based on the analysis, we design a methodology for evaluation parking areas with application on the conception settled in 2004, as well as a methodology for calculation of sufficient number of parking lots. We are also interested in possibilities of using intelligent transport systems for active navigation of trucks to available parking lots and possibility to reserve parking place

Exhaust gas emissions from road vehicles influences the environment and life quality of inhabitants, mainly in urban areas. The production of harmful emissions was rapidly decreased by introducing emission standards and limits. Opposite them, the huge increasing number of operated vehicles, mainly in developed countries f. e. in Europe, it eliminates the advantages of new and environmental friendlier vehicles. One of useful solution for health protection of urban inhabitants seems the introducing and supporting alternative propulsions in vehicles—hybrid vehicles and full electric vehicles. Transport and its direct activities are important consumers of energy and producers of greenhouse gases (GHG). The energy intensity and specific GHG production from transport activities are the key targets of the near future in the course of sustainable transport and mobility. There are different approaches to calculate GHG emissions from transport worldwide. In Europe, this has led to the need to standardize the methodology of GHG emissions calculation, the result is European standard EN 16258.

The introduction of the paper highlights best practice in the area of deploying autonomous trucks in warehouses and the automotive industry, including the current technical possibilities of selected autonomous trucks. The next chapter presents the selected outputs of the scientific project “Center of Excellence for Intelligent Transport Systems” focused on a proposal of the methodology for calculating the necessary number of autonomous trucks and trolleys deployed in logistics warehouses. The methodology is based on the requirement that autonomous trucks do not have downtime. This represents a model solution with possible application in warehouse logistics but also in the automotive industry. The follow-up chapter proposes a methodological procedure to evaluate the efficiency of introducing autonomous trucks to pull trolleys in a logistics warehouse compared to conventional trucks operated by trained personnel. Autonomous trucks can theoretically be operated 365 days and 24 hours depending on the technology of their operation, battery charging, etc. On the other hand, there is generally a shortage of logistics personnel in the European Union as well as reliability and performance have been declining in recent years. The conclusion of the paper includes a discussion of the research results obtained and possibilities for future research.
