Diesel is the most used fuel for buses and other urban transport vehicles in European countries. This paper deals with impacts on emissions production from the operation of the urban public transport fleet after its renewal. To what extent can the renewal of the urban public transport fleet in the city of Žilina contribute to increasing environmental sustainability in the way of reducing air pollution? The vehicle fleet change has partially consisted of vehicle traction system transition-diesel buses were substituted by hybrid driven (HEV) and electric driven buses (BEV). How can the direct and indirect emissions from the operation of vehicles be calculated? These were the posed research questions. The research aimed to propose a methodology for the calculation of direct and indirect emissions. Indirect emissions values (WtT—Well-to-Tank) for different types of fuels and tractions were obtained based on regression functions. These WtT emission factors together with the existing TtW (Tank-to-Wheels) emission factors (direct emissions) can be used for the assessment of environmental impacts of specific types of vehicles concerning energy source, fuel, or powertrain and type of operation. Direct pollutants such as CO, NOx and PM were calculated with the use of simulation methodology of HBEFA (Handbook of Emission Factors for Road Transport) software. The calculated CO2 savings for the period 2019–2023 about fleet renewal in absolute terms are EUR 1.3 million tons compared to the operation of the original fleet while maintaining the same driving performance. The renewal of the vehicle fleet secured by vehicle traction transition can be a way to reduce the energy intensity and environmental impacts of public transport in Žilina.

Vibro-abrasive processing is the basic method for the mass finishing of parts and components in various industries. Continuous progress in the development of processing media and machine design solutions means that every research effort into vibro-abrasive processing broadens the scope of knowledge in the selection of media, parameters, and applications in various industry fields. In this paper, an attempt is made to parametrize the vibratory grinding process, which is one of the three stages of high gloss finishing. Samples of the 6082 aluminium alloy intended for use in loaded machine parts and forged car wheel rims were subject to a research analysis. The samples were processed in a rotary vibrator equipped with a sample fixing system, using resin media and auxiliary com-pounds. On the basis of the analysis, the processing capacities were determined for the selected conditions and abrasive media. The influence of time and applied processing media on the change in samples’ roughness was determined. The effects of processing were examined with the use of laser devices measuring surface roughness in the areas of 3D and 2D analysis. The analysis of the test results showed that the use of S12TZ type resin media in a 12-hour finishing process of the 6082 aluminium alloy allowed for a 75.5% reduction in surface roughness, which corresponds to approximately 6.3% per hour of processing.

This paper presents the results of laboratory tests in which evaluation was performed regarding the effect of selected operating factors on the vibroactivity of upper gearbox housings made of three different fiber reinforced polymer composite materials with diverse layouts (cross and random) and types of reinforcing fibers: glass fiber and carbon fiber. The results of tests for composite housings were compared with those for a steel housing. The tests showed that composite housings had a weight lower by more than 60% compared to the steel housing. A multisensor measuring system consisting of vibration acceleration transducers, a directional microphone and a data acquisition card with software was used for the study. Tests of the vibroactivity of upper gear housings were carried out at different loads and rotational speeds of toothed gears. The study showed that composite housings are less sensitive to changes in the rotational speed that steel housings. The tests showed that at a higher rotational speed of the gear transmission, housings made of composite materials had a comparable or lower level of vibration. Tests and analyses of the vibroactivity of housings performed at different loads of the gear allow the conclusion that composite housings, despite a considerably lower weight than steel housings, are less sensitive to changes in the load of the gearing.

The preference and the development of electromobility are included among the priorities of transport policies in many European countries. This article deals with the issue of electric vehicle operation from the point of view of the environmental impact of electric power production, specifically the energy effectiveness of its production by utilizing primary power production sources. Differences in the effectiveness of the conversion of mixed forms of energy into electricity and their share in the process directly affect the final level of greenhouse gases (GHG) production, and thus the ecological footprint of electric vehicle operations. The specification of energy consumption and GHG production is based on the principles of the EN 16 258: 2012 standard, which considers legislative-regulated power plant effectiveness values, statistical values of GHG emissions from electricity production, and real energy consumption values of an electric vehicle fleet. The calculation takes into account the share of primary sources and the efficiency of electricity production and effectiveness of electricity distribution in each of the evaluated countries. The specific research study is performed by comparing measured parameters for individual countries chosen from the Central Europe region. The results of the study show that the quantification of the positive environmental consequences of increasing electromobility varies greatly in different countries, which means full-scale deployment of electromobility does necessarily deliver the sustainability of transport that was expected from it.

The paper presents a new method of measuring a motorcycle driver's exposure to vibration and noise. This method uses the simultaneous measurement of vibration and noise at the points of their direct influence on the motorcycle driver, and the measurement is carried out in real traffic conditions. The vibration of the motorcycle's handlebars, footrest and seat as well as the noise reaching the beginning of the motorcyclist's ear canal are recorded. These signals correspond to the direct impact of vibration energy on the upper and lower limbs as well as the torso of a motorcycle driver and the acoustic energy reaching the motorcyclist's hearing organs. The paper also proposes a signal processing method which enables determination of vibroacoustic effects on the motorcyclist without frequency correction of signals and with taking into account the current standards, and therefore with the use of appropriate frequency corrections. The measurement section of the paper presents examples of results of measurements of the actual exposure of the motorcycle driver to vibration and noise.

In this paper, exploratory studies on the application of fibre-reinforced polymer composites in the construction of gearbox housing elements that are used for transport means, as an alternative to traditionally used materials, were undertaken. Composite materials with three types of reinforcement were used: a glass-chopped strand mat, glass fabric, and carbon fabric. The manufactured elements were subjected to weight assessment and vibroactivity tests, including the recording of vibration and noise. The obtained results were compared to the values recorded for housings made of steel. It has been found that composite housings, while maintaining geometric similarity, are characterised by at least 60% lower weight compared to steel housings. It has been shown that in the frequency range below 1 kHz, composite housings are characterised by the presence of resonant frequencies with higher amplitudes than steel housings. At higher frequency ranges-above 1 kHz-composite housings had a lower vibroactivity level than steel housing. They allowed a significant reduction in the level of vibration and noise in this frequency range. The results obtained indicate that composite gearbox housings can be a good alternative to steel-based solutions.

The paper presents a method of processing vibration signals which was designed to detect damage to wheels of gearboxes for means of transport. This method uses entropy calculation, and multi-stage filtering calculated by means of digital filters and the Walsh–Hadamard transform to process signals. The presented method enables the extraction of vibration symptoms, which are symptoms of gear damage, from a complex vibration signal of a gearbox. The combination of multi-stage filtering and entropy enables the elimination of fast-changing vibration impulses, which interfere with the damage diagnosis process, and make it possible to obtain a synthetic signal that provides information about the state of the gearing. The paper demonstrates the usefulness of the developed method in the diagnosis of a gearbox in which two types of gearing damage were simulated: tooth chipping and damage to the working surface of the teeth. The research shows that the application of the proposed method of vibration of signal processing enables observation of the qualitative and quantitative changes in the entropy signal after denoising, which are unambiguous symptoms of the diagnosed damage.

The article deals with the problem of electric power production in terms of environmental impact, in particular the energy efficiency of its production to utilize primary sources. The efficiency of its production directly depends on the composition of primary sources and technologies used. Difference in efficiency by converting various forms of energy into electrical power and their ratio in the use directly affect the resulting efficiency, production of emissions and thus the environmental impact. Electric traction, its production, is burdened less efficient than other types of tractions used in transport, but at the final reconciliation of their consumption in vehicles, this difference decreases or delays because the vehicles themselves work with different conversion efficiency of its traction on mechanical work, vehicle driving.

The use of different types of semi-trailers for transporting oversized cargoes makes it possible to increase the competitiveness and transport potential of transport companies. Improper selection of semi-trailers and the use of universal protection systems affect the durability and safety of the use of means of transport. The results are presented of an analysis of damage caused to semi-trailers transporting long oversize loads due to incorrect operation. The reasons for the occurrence of damage and errors made during operation, which directly contribute to the occurrence of destructive phenomena, are discussed. The decision-making problem of choosing the right means of transport for the task of transporting long oversize loads has been solved based on an example of haulage of pipes. The study used a multi-criteria method. The results of the conducted analyses and tests show that damage occurs only to standard curtain-sided semi-trailers, in which it is the rear section that suffers damage. The solution to the decision-making problem of selecting the semi-trailer using multi-criteria methods shows that extendable semi-trailers are definitely the best choice for transporting long oversize loads.

Hybrid propulsion systems are more and more commonly used in means of transport such as passenger cars. The use of this type of propulsion, in addition to important environmental issues, also affects the acoustic climate in the passenger compartment and may therefore also affect the safe operation of vehicles. The paper presents the results of preliminary studies aimed at assessing the change in the sound level in the passenger compartment of a SUV passenger car with a hybrid propulsion system, depending on whether internal combustion or electric propulsion is being used. The sound level was measured in the entire frequency range and 1/3 octave bands, in the passenger compartment of the vehicle at speeds enabling the use of either the electric or combustion engine for propulsion. The comparison of the recorded sound level values leads to the conclusion that the electric propulsion system, which is used for starting and driving at a low travelling speed corresponding to speed in urban areas with reduced maximum speed, significantly improves the acoustic climate in the passenger compartment. The recorded reduction in the sound level in the passenger compartment, when compared to propulsion provided by an internal combustion engine, ranges from 1.4 to 4.8 dB(A), depending on the travelling speed. Analyses carried out in 1/3 octave bands indicate that changes in the sound level depending on the engine used for propulsion at the given time are strongly dependent on frequency and travelling speed of the vehicle.

Ensuring reliable operation of the means of transport requires the development of methods for early detection of damage to its components made of composite materials. For diagnostic testing of composite materials during normal operation of the means of transport, the authors propose to use non-contact vibration measurement methods and their subsequent processing and analysis. The paper presents the results of laboratory tests whose aim was to assess the ability to detect early symptoms of damage to composite materials using non-contact vibration measurement methods. The measurements included mechanical curves of the glass composite samples made in a conventional manner and simultaneously their vibrations were measured in a non-contact manner using a laser vibrometer. Continuous wavelet transform was used for processing vibration signals. Calculated time-frequency scale distributions of vibration signals enabled the designation of frequency scale bands in which early, low-energy symptoms of damage to glass composites are observed. The analysis results allow to draw conclusions that the use of non-contact measurements and processing of vibration signals extends the existing range of composites research and enables detection of early, low-energy symptoms of damage to glass fibre reinforced composites.

The paper presents a method for processing acoustic signals which allows the extraction, from a very noisy signal, of components which contain diagnostically useful information on the increased valve clearance of a combustion engine. This method used two-stage denoising of the acoustic signal performed by means of a discrete wavelet transform. Afterwards, based on the signal cleaned-up in this manner, its entropy was calculated as a quantitative measure of qualitative changes caused by the excessive clearance. The testing and processing of the actual acoustic signal of a combustion engine enabled clear extraction of components which contain information on the valve clearance being diagnosed.

The work aimed to assess the failure progress in a glass fiber-reinforced polymer laminate with a 3D-woven and (as a comparison) plain-woven reinforcement, during static bending, using acoustic emission signals. The innovative method of the separation of the signal coming from the fiber fracture and the one coming from the matrix fracture with the use of the acoustic event’s energy as a criterion was applied. The failure progress during static bending was alternatively analyzed by evaluation of the vibration signal. It gave a possibility to validate the results of the acoustic emission. Acoustic emission, as well as vibration signal analysis proved to be good and effective tools for the registration of failure effects in composite laminates. Vibration analysis is more complicated methodologically, yet it is more precise. The failure progress of the 3D laminate is “safer” and more beneficial than that of the plain-woven laminate. It exhibits less rapid load capacity drops and a higher fiber effort contribution at the moment of the main laminate failure.

The aim of the work is to evaluate the effectiveness of analysis of a failure progress of the glass fiber reinforced polymer laminate (classic and 3D), during static bending, with the use of high frequency vibration analysis (the order of kHz). During the tests, the instantaneous velocity of the samples' vibrations was recorded. The 3D laminate showed a more favorable course of failure (mostly fiber fracture) than the classic laminate (mostly delamination), but only in the direction transverse to the translaminar interweave strands. In the direction parallel to the interweave, it was also characterized mainly by delamination. It was stated that the vibration measurements significantly broaden and supplement the characteristics of bending, by way of revealing the local degradation changes in the examined material, especially before the initiation of the main stage of failure. The work also describes the frequency bands in which the symptoms of the occurring failures of particular laminate components were observed and where the values of the basic point parameters were estimated, which points to the occurrence of structure failure. The obtained results confirm the effectiveness of the vibration analysis as a tool for the evaluation of the course of composite material failure under static loads. POLYM.
