This study explores risk factors influencing the at-fault party in traffic accidents and analyzes their impact on traffic accident severity. Based on the traffic accident data of Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, China, from 2018 to 2020, 19 attribute variables including road attributes, time attributes, environmental attributes, and characteristics of the at-fault parties with either full responsibility, primary responsibility, or equal responsibility of the traffic accidents were extracted and analyzed in conjunction with the built environment attributes, such as road network density and POI (points of interest) density at the sites of traffic accidents. Using the RF-SHAP method to determine the relative importance of risk factors influencing the severity of traffic accidents with either motor vehicles or vulnerable groups at-fault, the top ten risk factors influencing the severity of traffic accidents with vulnerable road users as the at-fault parties are: functional zone, density of shopping POI, density of services POI, cause of accident, travel mode, collision type, season, road type, age of driver, and physical isolation. Travel mode, season, and road speed limit are more important risk factors for traffic accidents, with motor vehicle drivers as the at-fault parties. The density of service POI and cause of the accident are less critical for traffic accidents with motor vehicle drivers than traffic accidents with vulnerable road users who are at-fault. Subsequently, the Apriori algorithm based on association rules is used to analyze the important causal factors of traffic accidents, so as to explore the influence mechanism of multiple causal factors and their implied strong association rules. Our results show that most combined factors are associated with the matched Service and Shopping POI features. This study provides valuable information on the perceived risk of fatal accidents and highlights the built environment’s significant influence on fatal traffic accidents. Management strategies targeting the most typical combinations of accident risk factors are proposed for preventing fatalities and injuries in serious traffic accidents.

The transverse bending behaviors of in-plane bidirectional functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) plates are semi-analytically investigated by the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) in association with the precise integration method (PIM). The proposed scheme is able to explore the structural characteristics of FGPM plates with the material coefficients obeying arbitrary form of mathematical functions according to the in-plane coordinates. The present methodology selects only four quantities consisting of three translational displacement components and the electric potential as the fundamental unknowns. Additionally, variations of the four primary variables across the thickness direction are expressed as an analytical exponential matrix. In the developed approach, plates are regarded as a kind of three dimensional structure. But, an arbitrary in-plane surface discretized with two-dimensional spectral elements is set as the research domain. The practice is conducive to cut down the computational effort and increase the calculation efficiency. The SBFEM governing equations are formulated from the three-dimensional basic equations of piezoelectric materials without any assumptions on the plate kinematics and distributions of electromechanical components. By means of the scaled boundary coordinate system and the dual vector methodology, the key partial differential equations of piezoelectric materials are conveniently converted into the easily-solved first order ordinary differential SBFEM governing equation. The stiffness matrix is constructed from the analytical exponential matrix aided by the highly accurate PIM to predict the changing patterns of mechanical and electric quantities. To further improve the precision, the technology of dividing the plate into two parts with equal thickness is exploited. Finally, numerical exercises of square, rectangular and triangular piezoelectric plates are provided to validate the accuracy and fast convergence of the developed technique and reveal the effect of geometrical shapes, gradient functions, types of external loadings and thickness-to-span ratios on the static flexure of FGPM plates owning the in-plane bidirectional stiffness.

In this paper, uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) test and three-point bending (TPB) test, together with an acoustic emission (AE) system, were performed to investigate the mechanical properties and AE characteristic changes of concrete with different graphite powder (GP) content. The results show that: (1) Poor adhesion and low interlocking of graphite with cement stone increase the initial defects of concrete, reducing its elastic modulus and the cyclo-hoop effect, and thus weakening the compressive strength. (2) For concrete with a low graphite content, the second sharp rise in ringing counts or energy released during the compressive process can be regarded as a failure alarm. However, as GP content increases, the second sharp rise fades away, while the first sharp rise becomes more visible. At high GP content, the first sharp rise is better for predicting failure. (3) The initial defects caused by GP significantly lower the initial fracture toughness, but its bridging effect greatly increases the critical crack mouth opening displacement and thus significantly enhances the unstable fracture toughness of concrete, by up to 9.9% at 9% GP content. (4) In contrast to compressive process, the sharp increase in AE signals preceding failure during the fracture process cannot be used to predict failure because it occurs too close to the ultimate load. However, as GP can significantly increase the AE signals and damage value in the stable period, such failure precursor information can provide a safety warning for damage development.

The paper focuses on the problem of traffic congestion at intersection based on the mechanism of risk identification. The main goal of this study is to explore a new methodology for identifying and predicting the intersection congestion. Considering all the factors influencing the traffic status of intersection congestion, an integrated evaluation index system is constructed. Then, a detailed dynamic decision model is proposed for identifying the risk degree of the traffic congestion and predicting its influence on future traffic flow, which combines the traffic flow intrinsic properties with the basic model of the Risking Dynamic Multi-Attribute Decision-Making theory. A case study based on a real-world road network in Baoji, China, is implemented to test the efficiency and applicability of the proposed modeling. The evaluation result is in accord with the actual condition and shows that the approach proposed can determine the likelihood and risk degree of the traffic congestion occurring in the intersection, which can be used as a tool to help transport managers make some traffic control measures in advance.

A dynamic game model based on multiple decision makers is developed to minimize pedestrian–vehicle conflicts at unsignalized crosswalks. The characteristics of pedestrians and drivers crossing the street are divided into traffic features, behavioral characteristics, and psychological factors, using data collected from a survey of pedestrian crossing behavior. Based on waiting delay and risk assessment, a utility model of pedestrian crossing choice behavior is presented, and a probability model for different phases of the waiting stage is developed by splitting the waiting process into three stages with pedestrian waiting duration. The payment function and the game model of pedestrian–vehicle conflict based on distinct previous decision makers are developed using game theory and “mixed strategy”, and they are resolved in equilibrium.

Understanding the causes of traffic road accidents is crucial; however, as data collection is conducted by traffic police, accident-related environmental information is not available. To fill this gap, we collect information on the built environment within R = 500 m of the accident site; model the factors influencing accident severity in Shenyang, China, from 2018 to 2020 using the Random Forest algorithm; and use the SHapley Additive exPlanation method to interpret the underlying driving forces. We initially integrate five indicators of the built environment with 18 characteristics, including human and vehicle at-fault characters, infrastructure, time, climate, and land use attributes. Our results show that road type, urban/rural, season, and speed limit in the first 10 factors have a significant positive effect on accident severity; density of commercial-POI in the first 10 factors has a significant negative effect. Factors such as urban/rural and road type, commercial and vehicle type, road type, and season have significant effects on accident severity through an interactive mechanism. These findings provide important information for improving road safety.
