Elderly population (over the age of 60) is predicted to be 1.2 billion by 2025. Most of the elderly people would like to stay alone in their own house due to the high eldercare cost and privacy invasion. Unobtrusive activity recognition is the most preferred solution for monitoring daily activities of the elderly people living alone rather than the camera and wearable devices based systems. Thus, we propose an unobtrusive activity recognition classifier using Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) and anonymous binary sensors (PIR sensors and door sensors). The real world long-term fully annotated Aruba open dataset collected by binary sensors has been employed for the training and evaluation of the classifier. First, ten basic daily activities, namely: Bed_to_Toilet, Eating, Meal_Preparation, Relax, Sleeping, Work, Housekeeping, Wash_Dishes, Enter_Home, and Leave_Home are segmented with different sliding window sizes, and then converted into binary activity images. Next, the activity images are employed for training the DCNN classifiers with different parameters. Finally, the trained classifiers are evaluated with the 10-fold cross validation method, and the results show that the best DCNN classifier gives 0.79 and 0.951 of F1-score for all 10 activities and eight activities (excluding Leave_Home and Wash_Dishes), respectively.

In recent years, wearable monitoring devices have been very popular in the health care field and are being used to avoid sport injuries during exercise. They are usually worn on the wrist, the same as sport watches, or on the chest, like an electrocardiogram patch. Common functions of these wearable devices are that they use real time to display the state of health of the body, and they are all small sized. The electromyogram (EMG) signal is usually used to show muscle activity. Thus, the EMG signal could be used to determine the muscle-fatigue conditions. In this study, the goal is to develop an EMG patch which could be worn on the lower leg, the gastrocnemius muscle, to detect real-time muscle fatigue while exercising. A micro controller unit (MCU) in the EMG patch is part of an ARM Cortex-M4 processor, which is used to measure the median frequency (MF) of an EMG signal in real time. When the muscle starts showing tiredness, the median frequency will shift to a low frequency. In order to delete the noise of the isotonic EMG signal, the EMG patch has to run the empirical mode decomposition algorithm. A two-electrode circuit was designed to measure the EMG signal. The maximum power consumption of the EMG patch was about 39.5 mAh. In order to verify that the real-time MF values measured by the EMG patch were close to the off-line MF values measured by the computer system, we used the root-mean-square value to estimate the difference in the real-time MF values and the off-line MF values. There were 20 participants that rode an exercise bicycle at different speeds. Their EMG signals were recorded with an EMG patch and a physiological measurement system at the same time. Every participant rode the exercise bicycle twice. The averaged root-mean-square values were 2.86 ± 0.86 Hz and 2.56 ± 0.47 Hz for the first and second time, respectively. Moreover, we also developed an application program implemented on a smart phone to display the participants’ muscle-fatigue conditions and information while exercising. Therefore, the EMG patch designed in this study could monitor the muscle-fatigue conditions to avoid sport injuries while exercising.

Human activity recognition (HAR) can monitor persons at risk of COVID-19 virus infection to manage their activity status. Currently, many people are isolated at home or quarantined in some specified places due to the spread of COVID-19 virus all over the world. This situation raises the requirement of using the HAR to observe physical activity levels to assess physical and mental health. This study proposes an ensemble learning algorithm (ELA) to perform activity recognition using the signals recorded by smartphone sensors. The proposed ELA combines a gated recurrent unit (GRU), a convolutional neural network (CNN) stacked on the GRU and a deep neural network (DNN). The input samples of DNN were an extra feature vector consisting of 561 time-domain and frequency-domain parameters. The full connected DNN was used to fuse three models for the activity classification. The experimental results show that the precision, recall, F1-score and accuracy achieved by the ELA are 96.8%, 96.8%, 96.8%, and 96.7%, respectively, which are superior to the existing schemes.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) is an important measurement for monitoring exercise and fitness. Because if its high sampling frequency requirement, wireless transmission of sEMG data is a challenge. In this article a wireless sEMG measurement system with a sampling frequency of 2 KHz is developed based upon a MSP 430 microcontroller and Bluetooth transmission. Standard isotonic and isometric muscle contraction are clearly represented in the receiving user interface. Muscle fatigue detection is an important application of sEMG. Traditional muscle fatigue is detected from the median frequency of the sEMG power spectrum. The regression slope of the linear regression of median frequency is an important muscle fatigue index. A more negative slope value represents a higher muscle fatigue condition. To test the system performance, muscle fatigue detection was examined by having subjects run on a pedaled-multifunctional elliptical trainer for approximately 30 minutes at three loading levels. Ten subjects underwent a total of 60 exercise sessions to provide the experimental data. Results showed that the regression slope gradually decreases as expected, and there is a significant gender difference.

In the last decade, unobtrusive (device-free and non-privacy invasive) recognition of activities of daily living (ADLs) for an individual in a smart home has been studied by many researchers. However, the unobtrusive recognition of multi-resident activities in a smart home is hardly studied. We propose a novel RGB activity image-based DCNN classifier for the unobtrusive recognition of the multi-resident activities (Bed_to_Toilet, Bed, Breakfast, Lunch, Leave_home, Laundry, Dinner, Night_wandering, R2_work, and R1_medicine) using Cairo open dataset provided by CASAS project. The open dataset is collected by environmental sensors (PIR and temperature sensors) in Cairo testbed while an adult couple with a dog was living for 55 days. The dataset is preprocessed with activity segmentation, sliding window, and RGB activity image conversion steps. The experimental results demonstrate that our classifier has the highest total accuracy of 95.2% among the previously developed machine learning classifiers that employed the same dataset. Moreover, the proposed RGB activity image was proven to be helpful for increasing the recognition rate. Therefore, we conclude that the proposed DCNN classifier is a useful tool for the unobtrusive recognition of the multi-resident activity in a home.

In recent years, the number of proposed fall-detection systems that have been developed has increased dramatically. A threshold-based algorithm utilizing an accelerometer has been used to detect low-complexity falling activities. In this study, we defined activities in which the body’s center of gravity quickly declines as falling activities of daily life (ADLs). In the non-falling ADLs, we also focused on the body’s center of gravity. A hyperplane of the support vector machine (SVM) was used as the separating plane to replace the traditional threshold method for the detection of falling ADLs. The scripted and continuous unscripted activities were performed by two groups of young volunteers (20 subjects) and one group of elderly volunteers (five subjects). The results showed that the four parameters of the input vector had the best accuracy with 99.1% and 98.4% in the training and testing, respectively. For the continuous unscripted test of one hour, there were two and one false positive events among young volunteers and elderly volunteers, respectively.
