With the expansion of the area under Cruciferae vegetable cultivation, and an increase in the incidence of natural threats such as pests and diseases globally, Cruciferae vegetable losses caused by pathogens, insects, and pests are on the rise. As one of the key metabolites produced by Cruciferae vegetables, glucosinolate (GLS) is not only an indicator of their quality but also controls infestation by numerous fungi, bacteria, aphids, and worms. Today, the safe and pollution-free production of vegetables is advocated globally, and environmentally friendly pest and disease control strategies, such as biological control, to minimize the adverse impacts of pathogen and insect pest stress on Cruciferae vegetables, have attracted the attention of researchers. This review explores the mechanisms via which GLS acts as a defensive substance, participates in responses to biotic stress, and enhances plant tolerance to the various stress factors. According to the current research status, future research directions are also proposed.

Nitric oxide (NO) acts an essential signaling molecule that is involved in regulating various physiological and biochemical processes in plants. However, whether S-nitrosylation is a crucial molecular mechanism of NO is still largely unknown. In this study, 50 μM S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) treatment was found to have a maximum biological effect on promoting adventitious rooting in cucumber. Meanwhile, removal of endogenous NO significantly inhibited the development of adventitious roots implying that NO is responsible for promoting the process of adventitious rooting. Moreover, application of GSNO resulted in an increase of intracellular S-nitrosothiol (SNO) levels and endogenous NO production, while decreasing the S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR) activity during adventitious rooting, implicating that S-nitrosylation might be involved in NO-induced adventitious rooting in cucumber. Furthermore, the identification of S-nitrosylated proteins was performed utilizing the liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and biotin-switch technique during the development of adventitious rooting. Among these proteins, the activities and S-nitrosylated level of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), tubulin alpha chain (TUA), and glutathione reductase (GR) were further analyzed as NO direct targets. Our results indicated that NO might enhance the S-nitrosylation level of GAPDH and GR, and was found to subsequently reduce these activities and transcriptional levels. Conversely, S-nitrosylation of TUA increased the expression level of TUA. The results implied that S-nitrosylation of key proteins seems to regulate various pathways through differential S-nitrosylation during adventitious rooting. Collectively, these results suggest that S-nitrosylation could be involved in NO-induced adventitious rooting, and they also provide fundamental evidence for the molecular mechanism of NO signaling during adventitious rooting in cucumber explants.

In northwest of China, mini Chinese cabbage (Brassica pekinensis) is highly valued by consumers, and is widely cultivated during winter in solar-greenhouses where low light (LL) fluence (between 85 and 150 μmol m−2 s−1 in day) is a major abiotic stress factor limiting plant growth and crop productivity. The mechanisms with which various NH4 +: NO3 − ratios affected growth and photosynthesis of mini Chinese cabbage under normal (200 μmol m−2 s−1) and low (100 μmol m−2 s−1) light conditions was investigated. The four solutions with different ratios of NH4 +: NO3 − applied were 0:100, 10:90, 15:85 and 25:75 with the set up in a glasshouse in hydroponic culture. The most appropriate NH4 +: NO3 − ratio that improved the tolerance of mini Chinese cabbage seedlings to LL was found in our current study. Under low light, the application of NH4 +: NO3 − (10:90) significantly stimulated growth compared to only NO3 − by increasing leaf area, canopy spread, biomass accumulation, and net photosynthetic rate. The increase in net photosynthetic rate was associated with an increase in: 1) maximum and effective quantum yield of PSII; 2) activities of Calvin cycle enzymes; and 3) levels of mRNA relative expression of several genes involved in Calvin cycle. In addition, glucose, fructose, sucrose, starch and total carbohydrate, which are the products of CO2 assimilation, accumulated most in the cabbage leaves that were supplied with NH4 +: NO3 − (10:90) under LL condition. Low light reduced the carbohydrate: nitrogen (C: N) ratio while the application of NH4 +: NO3 − (10:90) alleviated the negative effect of LL on C: N ratio mainly by increasing total carbohydrate contents. The application of NH4 +:NO3 − (10:90) increased rbcL, rbcS, FBA, FBPase and TK expression and/or activities, enhanced photosynthesis, carbohydrate accumulation and improved the tolerance of mini Chinese cabbage seedlings to LL. The results of this study would provide theoretical basis and technical guidance for mini Chinese cabbage production. In practical production, the ratio of NH4 +:NO3 − should be adjusted with respect to light fluence for successful growing of mini Chinese cabbage.

Calcium and ethylene are essential in plant growth and development. In this study, we investigated the effects of calcium and ethylene on adventitious root formation in cucumber explants under salt stress. The results revealed that 10 μM calcium chloride (CaCl2) or 0.1 μM ethrel (ethylene donor) treatment have a maximum biological effect on promoting the adventitious rooting in cucumber under salt stress. Meanwhile, we investigated that removal of ethylene suppressed calcium ion (Ca2+)-induced the formation of adventitious root under salt stress indicated that ethylene participates in this process. Moreover, the application of Ca2+ promoted the activities of 1-aminocyclopropane-l-carboxylic acid synthase (ACS) and ACC Oxidase (ACO), as well as the production of 1-aminocyclopropane-l-carboxylic acid (ACC) and ethylene under salt stress. Furthermore, we discovered that Ca2+ greatly up-regulated the expression level of CsACS3, CsACO1 and CsACO2 under salt stress. Meanwhile, Ca2+ significantly down-regulated CsETR1, CsETR2, CsERS, and CsCTR1, but positively up-regulated the expression of CsEIN2 and CsEIN3 under salt stress; however, the application of Ca2+ chelators or channel inhibitors could obviously reverse the effects of Ca2+ on the expression of the above genes. These results indicated that Ca2+ played a vital role in promoting the adventitious root development in cucumber under salt stress through regulating endogenous ethylene synthesis and activating the ethylene signal transduction pathway.

Supplementary light exposure using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) promotes the growth of tomato plants in greenhouses. Owing to the biological clock in plants, determining the period during which they must be exposed to supplementary light is essential to enhance growth. In this study, we used red and blue LEDs (red:blue = 7:2) as the supplementary light source, to determine the effects of different light supplemental periods on the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of tomato seedlings. Light supplementation in the morning and evening promoted the growth of tomato plants to varying degrees, including the accumulation of photosynthetic products in the leaves. Light supplementation in the morning enhanced dry matter accumulation, root growth, and the contents of chlorophyll and carotenoids in the leaves. Although both morning and evening light supplementation increased the levels of gas exchange parameters and Rubisco activity in tomato leaves, these effects were more prominent after morning light supplementation. Furthermore, red and blue light supplementation in the morning pre-activated the key photosynthetic enzymes, promoted the synthesis and accumulation of photosynthetic pigments, increased the photosynthetic capacity of, and photosynthate production in, tomato leaves. These findings suggest that light supplementation in the morning is more effective in promoting the growth and development of tomato plants cultivated in greenhouses.

In arid areas, water shortage has become a major bottleneck limiting the sustainable development of agriculture, necessitating improved water use efficiency and the full development of innovative water-saving irrigation management technologies to improve quality. In the present study, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Micro Tom) fruits were used as materials, and different irrigation frequencies were set during the fruit expansion stage. The normal treatment (CK) was irrigated every three days, while the water deficit treatments were irrigated at varying frequencies: once every 4 days (T1), 5 days (T2), 6 days (T3), 7 days (T4), and 8 days (T5). These corresponded to 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%, and 40% of the maximum field moisture capacity (FMC), respectively, with CK maintaining full irrigation at 90% of the maximum FMC. The water deficit treatment T3, with less stress damage to plants and the most significant effect on fruit quality improvement, was selected based on plant growth indices, photosynthetic characteristics, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, and fruit quality indices, and its effects on carotenoids, glycolic acid fractions, and volatile compounds during tomato fruit ripening were further investigated. The outcome indicated that moderate water deficit significantly increased the carotenoid components of the tomato fruits, and their lycopene, lutein, α-carotene, and β-carotene contents increased by 11.85%, 12.28%, 20.87%, and 63.89%, respectively, compared with the control fruits at the ripening stage. The contents of glucose and fructose increased with the development and ripening of the tomato fruits, and reached their maximum at the ripening stage. Compared to the control treatment, the moderate water deficit treatment significantly increased the glucose and fructose levels during ripening by 86.70% and 19.83%, respectively. Compared to the control conditions, water deficit conditions reduced the sucrose content in the tomato fruits by 27.14%, 18.03%, and 18.42% at the mature green, turning, and ripening stages, respectively. The moderate water deficit treatment significantly increased the contents of tartaric acid, malic acid, shikimic acid, alpha ketoglutaric acid, succinic acid, and ascorbic acid, and decreased the contents of oxalic acid and citric acid compared to the control. The contents of total soluble sugar and total organic acid and the sugar–acid ratio were significantly increased by 48.69%, 3.71%, and 43.09%, respectively, compared with the control at the ripening stage. The moderate water deficit treatment increased the fruit response values to each sensor of the electronic nose, especially W5S, which was increased by 28.40% compared to the control at the ripening stage. In conclusion, during the ripening process of tomato fruit, its nutritional quality and flavor quality contents can be significantly improved under moderate (MD) deficit irrigation treatment. The results of this experiment can lay the foundation for the research on the mechanism of water deficit aiming to promote the quality of tomato fruit, and, at the same time, provide a theoretical basis and reference for tomato water conservation and high-quality cultivation.
