Critical raw materials (CRMs) supply is a challenge that EU countries have to face, with many thinking about domestic procurement from natural ore deposits and anthropogenic deposits (landfills and extractive waste facilities). The present research focuses on the possibilities linked to the supply of CRMs and the potential for exploiting rare earth elements (REEs), investigating a large variety of extractive waste and siliceous rocks in the Piedmont region (Northern Italy). Indeed, the recovery of REEs from the extractive waste (EW) of siliceous quarries and other siliceous ore deposits can be a valuable way to reduce supply chain risks. Starting with a review of the literature on mining activities in Piedmont and continuing with the sampling and geochemical, mineralogical, petrographic, and environmental characterization of EW facilities connected to siliceous dimension stones, of kaolinitic gneiss ore deposits, and of soils present near the investigated areas, this study shows that the degree of REEs enrichment differs depending on the sampling area (soil or EW) and lithology. The concentration of REEs in the EW at some sampling sites fulfils the indicators of industrial-grade and industrial recovery; the high cumulative production and potential market values of EW and the positive recovery effects through proven methodologies indicate a viable prospect of REE recovery from EW. However, REE recovery industrialization faces challenges such as the difficulty in achieving efficient large-scale recovery due to large regional differences in REE abundance, the mismatch between potential market value and waste annual production, etc. Nonetheless, in the future, EW from dimension stone quarries could be differentially studied and reused based on the enrichment and distribution characteristics of trace elements. The present paper shows investigation procedures undertaken to determine both CRMs potentialities and environmental issues (on the basis of literature data employed to select the more-promising areas and on sampling and characterization activities in the selected areas), together with procedures to determine the waste quantities and tentative economic values of REEs present in the investigated areas. This approach, tested on a large area (Piedmont region), is replicable and applicable to other similar case studies (at EU and non-EU levels) and offers decision makers the possibility to acquire a general overview of the potential available resources in order to decide whether and where to concentrate efforts (including economic ones) in a more detailed study to evaluate the exploitable anthropogenic deposits.

The preparation of underground-backfill material from CSW can be used for large-scale disposal of solid waste. The proportion of backfill material plays an important role in transportation and backfilling effect, and the mix-proportion optimization of backfill material is essentially a multi-factor and multi-objective optimization problem. In this paper, to obtain the mix proportion of backfill materials with optimal comprehensive-evaluation indexes, and suitable for the engineering application, the fluidity and strength of backfill material, mainly composed of coal gangue(CG), fly ash (FA), flue gas desulfurization gypsum (FGD gypsum), and gasification coarse slag (GCS), were tested by single-factor transformation method, and the effects of various solid wastes on the slump-flow, bleeding rate and early strength of backfill material were analyzed. The optimal mix proportion of CSW with the slump-flow, bleeding rate, and 3-day and 7-day strengths as the evaluation indicators is FA: GCS: FGD gypsum: CG = 25%:25%:25%:25%, according to the multi-objective decision model. Furthermore, the comprehensive evaluation index that meets the requirements of mine backfilling is obtained by changing the ordinary portland cement (OPC) content, that is, the optimal OPC content is 10% of the total solid waste, and the mass concentration is 78%. Finally, the pore structure, micromorphology, and composition of the backfill material with the optimal mix proportion were studied by Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS). The research results provide a good reference for the field application of CSW for underground backfilling.

Most of the previous studies focused on the mechanical characteristics before the stress peak of solid waste cemented backfill, but in the compression process of a solid waste cemented body, the phenomenon of post-peak stress rebound often occurs. Through the uniaxial compression experiment of a solid waste cemented body composed of coal gangue, fly ash, desulfurization gypsum, gasification slag, and furnace bottom slag, this paper analyzed the compression deformation characteristics of a solid waste cemented body with different mix proportions before and after the stress peak, established the stress–strain curve model of rebound stress in the rising and descending section after the stress peak, and revealed the reasons for the rebound stress and secondary unloading of the cemented body after the stress peak. The results showed that the maximum rebound stress accounts for 40%–80% of the compressive strength, and the changes in the two are positively correlated. The stress–strain curve model is a cubic function in the post-peak stress rising section and a quadratic rational function in the descending section. With the increase in the maximum compressive strength of the cemented body, its maximum rebound stress also increases, but its corresponding compressive strain generally shows a downward trend. There is a positive correlation between the rebound stress increment and strain increment of the cemented body. The change in the supporting structure and the evolution of the failure form of the cemented body before and after the maximum rebound stress indicate that the compression failure of the residual supporting structure caused by the main crack is the main reason for the rebound of the stress after the peak value of the cemented body to the complete unloading.

When gob side entry retaining is carried out in backfill mining, the roof will show different subsidence morphology due to the difference of compactness and supporting force of the backfill body at different positions. This paper analyzed the immediate roof subsidence structure under two extreme conditions, constructed the roof segmented subsidence structure and the mechanical model of roadside backfill body, and used FLAC3D software to investigate the roof migration and the force law of the roadside backfill body under the conditions of different goaf backfilled rates, different width and strength of roadside backfill body. Finally, the backfill practice of a mine in Shandong Province of China is taken as an example for analysis. The results show that the segmented subsidence structure of the immediate roof is related to the mechanical properties of the roadside backfill body and the goaf backfill body. When the backfilled rate of goaf decreases from 95% to 70%, the width of roadside backfill body decreases from 5 m to 1 m, and the elastic modulus decreases from 10 GPa to 0.5 GPa, the greater difference in the subsidence and inclination of the immediate roof on both sides of the roadside backfill body is, the more obvious the segmented subsidence structure characteristics of the immediate roof are, and the greater force on the roadside backfill body will be, the more unfavorable it is to maintain the stability of the roadway surrounding rock and the roadway backfill body. Therefore, when gob side entry retaining is carried out in backfill mining, the surrounding rock structure and the force on roadside backfill body should be considered comprehensively.

The fracture instability mechanism of the basic roof is the key to support selection and surrounding rock stability control, and it is also the guarantee of safe and efficient coal mining. By means of theoretical analysis and numerical calculation, the calculation model of basic roof of steeply dipping coal seams (SDCS) under linear load is established, the stress distribution expression of basic roof plate is deduced, the inclination effect of stress evolution of steeply dipping coal seams (SDCS) workface is analyzed, and the “sequential” weighting mechanism of workface is revealed. Based on the numerical simulation test, the evolution laws of vertical stress release and shear stress concentration of overlying strata in workface with different coal seam dip angles are obtained. The results show that there is shear stress arch in the overlying strata. With the increase of coal seam dip angle, the overlying strata are suddenly damaged under the action of shear stress. The roof is in the state of discontinuous movement due to its self‐weight and overburden pressure. Support is affected by the discontinuous movement and moved along with the roof. The results of this study can be of theoretical reference to the control of SDCS.
