Remote sensing systems based on consumer-grade cameras have been increasingly used in scientific research and remote sensing applications because of their low cost and ease of use. However, the performance of consumer-grade cameras for practical applications has not been well documented in related studies. The objective of this research was to apply three commonly-used classification methods (unsupervised, supervised, and object-based) to three-band imagery with RGB (red, green, and blue bands) and four-band imagery with RGB and near-infrared (NIR) bands to evaluate the performance of a dual-camera imaging system for crop identification. Airborne images were acquired from a cropping area in Texas and mosaicked and georeferenced. The mosaicked imagery was classified using the three classification methods to assess the usefulness of NIR imagery for crop identification and to evaluate performance differences between the object-based and pixel-based methods. Image classification and accuracy assessment showed that the additional NIR band imagery improved crop classification accuracy over the RGB imagery and that the object-based method achieved better results with additional non-spectral image features. The results from this study indicate that the airborne imaging system based on two consumer-grade cameras used in this study can be useful for crop identification and other agricultural applications.

Consumer-grade cameras are being increasingly used for remote sensing applications in recent years. However, the performance of this type of cameras has not been systematically tested and well documented in the literature. The objective of this research was to evaluate the performance of original and resolution-reduced images taken from two consumer-grade cameras, a RGB camera and a modified near-infrared (NIR) camera, for crop identification and leaf area index (LAI) estimation. Airborne RGB and NIR images taken over a 6.5-square-km cropping area were mosaicked and aligned to create a four-band mosaic with a spatial resolution of 0.4 m. The spatial resolution of the mosaic was then reduced to 1, 2, 4, 10, 15 and 30 m for comparison. Six supervised classifiers were applied to the RGB images and the four-band images for crop identification, and 10 vegetation indices (VIs) derived from the images were related to ground-measured LAI. Accuracy assessment showed that maximum likelihood applied to the 0.4-m images achieved an overall accuracy of 83.3% for the RGB image and 90.4% for the four-band image. Regression analysis showed that the 10 VIs explained 58.7% to 83.1% of the variability in LAI. Moreover, spatial resolutions at 0.4, 1, 2 and 4 m achieved better classification results for both crop identification and LAI prediction than the coarser spatial resolutions at 10, 15 and 30 m. The results from this study indicate that imagery from consumer-grade cameras can be a useful data source for crop identification and canopy cover estimation.

The first seasonal harvest technology of ratoon rice requires the least rolling with suitable stubble height required by agronomy when the ratoon rice is nearly mature. Mechanized harvesting in the first season of ratoon rice needs to finish harvesting, threshing, cleaning, straw treatment, grain transportation, grain collection and other processes at one time with a low rolling rate and low rolling degree. Limited by the production conditions such as wet and soft fields, and wet, thick and strong straw, harvest technology with high efficiency and a low rolling rate of ratoon rice in the first season has become the key technology and research focus affecting the yield of ratoon rice. In this paper, we analyzed the planting and popularization of ratoon rice in China, summarized the planting mode and agronomic characteristics of ratoon rice, highlighted the research status of mechanized harvesting equipment for the first season of ratoon rice, especially the specialized harvesters, and illustrated in detail the technical characteristics and research trends of key segments such as chassis, header, and processes such as threshing and cleaning, and straw and stubble treatment of ratoon rice harvesters. In addition, we summarized the application status and value of lightweight technology, performance monitoring and fault diagnosis technology, grain quality detection technology and automatic navigation technology of mechanized harvest in the first season, explained the main problems and reasons affecting the development of ratoon rice harvest mechanization in China, and illustrated the prospect of its research focus and tendency.

In order to solve the problem where the amount of screw fertilizer distributor can only be adjusted by rotating speed and poor fertilization uniformity at low rotational speeds, a blocking wheel-type screw fertilizer distributor was designed. Single factor and L9(34) orthogonal simulation tests based on EDEM software were carried out to optimize the distributor variables at a speed of 20 r/min. The bench verification test was built under the same conditions as the simulation tests to verify the results of the simulation. Finally, the bench performance tests were carried out to evaluate distributor performance. The results of simulation tests revealed that the minimum coefficient of variation of fertilization uniformity (CVFU) was 19.27%, with the structural parameter combination of the inner diameter (17 mm), pitch (45 mm), outlet distance (40 mm), and number of screw heads (1). The verification test results showed that the changing trend and values of the CVFU were almost the same as the simulation tests. The results of the performance test revealed that when the opening width of the blocking wheel was 10–30 mm and the rotation speed was 20–60 r/min, the amount of fertilizer per lap (FAPL) was in the range of 27.74–38.15 g/r; the maximum CVFU and the coefficient of variation of fertilization stability (CVFS) were 29.43% and 2.18%, respectively, which met the requirements of the industry standard. This research provides a good reference for optimizing the screw fertilizer distribution and for researchers in the field of precision fertilization.

Combine harvesters are widely used worldwide in harvesting many crops, and they have many functions that cover the entire harvesting process, such as cutting, threshing, separating, and cleaning. The threshing drum is the core working device of the combine harvester and plays an influential role in rice threshing efficiency, threshing power requirement, and seed loss. In this study, two structures of rice threshers (conical-shaped and cylindrical-shaped) were tested and evaluated for performance under different thresher rotating speeds of 1100, 1300, and 1500 rpm and different feeding rates of 0.8, 1.1, and 1.4 kg/s. The experiment was designed using the Taguchi method, and the obtained results were evaluated using the same technique. The thresher structure and operating parameters were assessed and optimized with reference to threshing efficiency, required power, and productivity. The obtained results revealed that increasing thresher rotating speed and the feeding rate positively related to threshing efficiency, power, and productivity. The highest efficiency of 98% and the maximum productivity of 0.64 kg/s were obtained using the conical-shaped thresher under a 1500 rpm rotating speed and a feed rate of 1.4 kg/s, whereas the minimum required power of 5.45 kW was obtained using the conical thresher under a rotating speed of 1100 rpm and a feed rate of 0.8 kg/s.

To improve the precision of deep fertilization of paddy fields, a six-row centralized pneumatic deep precision fertilization device for a rice transplanter was designed. This device includes a spiral fertilizer distribution system, centralized pneumatic fertilizer delivery system, opener system, and fertilization control system. The centralized airflow distribution method was used in the fertilizer delivery system to ensure that the airflow in each fertilizer pipe was evenly distributed. The rotational speeds of the power take-off (PTO) and fertilizer shaft were measured synchronously using photoelectric sensors and matched proportionately in real-time using PID closed-loop control algorithms to achieve precise fertilization rates at each working speed of the rice transplanter. There were two key considerations in the design of the control system to ensure precise fertilization. Firstly, a photoelectric sensor was used to measure the speed of the PTO; the high rotational speed of the PTO could provide a high signal frequency and improve the precision of the measurement of the transplanter’s working speed. Secondly, the fertilizer shaft speed measurement subprogram was set to sleep for a short period to reduce the vibration caused by the engine. During the tests on of pneumatic fertilizer delivery system, single-factor tests on airflow distribution methods were conducted. The results show that the coefficient of variation of the airflow speed for the centralized airflow distribution method was 1.67%, which was the least among the coefficients of the three distribution methods. In the bench tests, the rotational speeds of the fertilizer shaft were set as 10 r/min, 20 r/min, 30 r/min, and 40 r/min. The maximum coefficient of variation of the fertilization consistency in different rows was 1.49% at the rotational speed of 20 r/min. The maximum coefficient of variation of the fertilization stability was 2.86% at the rotational speed of 40 r/min, while the average fertilizer amount per lap for each distributor was 26.25 g/r. The results of the dynamic fertilization tests show that the maximum relative error of the fertilizer distribution amount was 2.00% when the target fertilizer rates were 20, 30, and 40 kg/667 m2. The results of the field tests show that the average relative error of the fertilization amount was 3.53%, which satisfies the design standard. This research provides reference for optimizing pneumatic fertilizer delivery systems and improving fertilization control systems and other pneumatic precision fertilizer application devices.
