In this paper, we introduce a secure multiple access scheme which exploits the multipath structure of the channel to create a multi-user interference environment. The generated interference enables legitimate users to share time and frequency resources over spatially secure communication links. Utilizing directional modulation, we ensure secrecy for legitimate users against eavesdropping while preserving mutual confidentiality between the legitimate users themselves. Moreover, we introduce a complementary scheme for covering the non-selective channel case. The scheme uses directional modulation in coordinated multi-point transmission to provide location-specific secure communication to legitimate users. We characterize the achievable performance using a newly defined metric called vulnerable region. We provide analysis for the achievable secrecy rate, secrecy outage probability, and channel correlation effect on the secrecy performance for the proposed scheme. Furthermore, the effect of the channel spatial diversity, channel estimation error and the number of legitimate users on the secrecy performance is studied.

In delay tolerant WSNs mobile ferries can be used for collecting data from sensor nodes, especially in large-scale networks. Unlike data collection via multi-hop forwarding among the nodes, ferries travel across the sensing field and collect data from sensors. The advantage of using a ferry-based approach is that, it eliminates the need for multi-hop forwarding of data, and as a result energy consumption at the nodes is significantly reduced. However, this increases data delivery latency and as such might not be suitable for all applications. In this paper an efficient data collection algorithm using a ferry node is proposed while considering the overall ferry roundtrip travel time and the overall consumed energy in the network. To minimize the overall roundtrip travel time, we divided the sensing field area into virtual grids based on the assumed sensing range and assigned a checkpoint in each one. A Genetic Algorithm with weight metrics to solve the Travel Sales Man Problem (TSP) and decide on an optimum path for the ferry to collect data is then used. We utilized our previously published node ranking clustering algorithm (NRCA) in each virtual grid and in choosing the location for placing the ferry’s checkpoints. In NRCA the decision of selecting cluster heads is based on their residual energy and their distance from their associated checkpoint which acts as a temporary sink. We simulated the proposed algorithm in MATLAB and showed its performance in terms of the network lifetime, total energy consumption and the total travel time. Moreover, we showed through simulation that nonlinear trajectory achieves a better optimization in term of network lifetime, overall energy consumed and the roundtrip travel time of the ferry compared to linear predetermined trajectory. In additional to that, we compared the performance of your algorithm to other recent algorithms in terms of the network lifetime using same and different initial energy values.

Increasing the spectral efficiency was always the motivation behind the evolution of wireless communication systems. Also, due to the widespread usage of wireless systems, securing the transmitted data rises as a main concern nowadays. Hereby, we introduce a scheme that increases the capacity of wireless systems by transmitting multiple independent data streams, while using the space domain as a source of separation. The scheme also utilizes the space domain, in order to provide a secure communication link for each of the transmitted streams. The analysis is performed by using different orders of QAM constellations, and also baseband orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing signal structure. The scheme shows a high randomization for the received signal along the directions out of the desired transmission beams, and fits to the standard bit-error-rate curves for all desired transmission directions. Besides, the scheme can be easily synthesized, using low complexity algorithms.

Due to the expansion of small scale distributed energy resources such as solar rooftop and PEVs, decentralized energy trading is expected to be one of the most important components of next generation power systems. Decentralized peer-to-peer energy exchange systems are believed to be a promising solution not only to solve the scalability and mobility problems in the existing system but also to create a competitive market that can benefit small scale prosumers and consumers. However, such systems need to be equipped with the necessary security, privacy and payment transaction mechanisms to be efficient and trusted. In this paper, we propose a decentralized energy exchange system based on Blockchains. Blockchains is a technology that supports secure transactions between participating entities in a decentralized peer-to-peer network. The proposed system allows for energy exchange between prosumers using a form of smart electronic contracts which are based on Blockchains.

In this paper, we investigate how Cognitive Radio as a means of communication can be utilized to serve a smart grid deployment end to end, from a home area network to power generation. We show how Cognitive Radio can be mapped to integrate the possible different communication networks within a smart grid large scale deployment. In addition, various applications in smart grid are defined and discussed showing how Cognitive Radio can be used to fulfill their communication requirements. Moreover, information security issues pertained to the use of Cognitive Radio in a smart grid environment at different levels and layers are discussed and mitigation techniques are suggested. Finally, the well-known Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) is integrated with the Cognitive Radio part of a smart grid communication network to protect against unauthorized access to customer’s data and to the network at large.
